Hi,
I really loved the Fallout series and love the theme that Fallen Earth sets out to work with. However, I've never played Fallen Earth, and I have to say that one of the major reasons is because the graphics look worse than any 49$ USD MMO title I've ever seen in the last few years.
I think I can deal with lesser graphics to some extent, but I mean.. come on. The landscape looks like a 2 color texture that stretches for infinity, dotted with straight trees, cars with checker board texture boxes.. it's really ugly.
Further to that, they completely throw you out of game immersion by making corpses immediately pop up with a swarm of flies flying about it in some 2D animated way that reminds me of Duke Nukem 3D graphics, or if not flies.. a huge glowing skull spinning round and round above a newly fallen corpse.
I mean.. wtf? This is retarded, plain and simple. Can someone explain to me how they've managed to look past these silly things, and what the game has to offer beyond its nightmarishly-bad gameplay videos? And if you've played before and can say that the gameplay videos do indeed reflect the seemingly poor quality of this game, please help me out by confirming that this game is just a pile of post-apocalyptic manure.

You are absolutely right, the game looks terrible and should be put out of its missery ASAP.
Ever tried driving a car in that game? No? :P I swear; you will stop what you are doing, and so will everyone else who sees it, and then there will be silence as everyone is trying to figure out if its real or some sort of sick joke. And then you will laugh out loud and delete the game from your hard drive.
The physics in the game are from the same timeperiod as the graphics are from... Yea, its that bad.

If the new battlefield or COD game would have looked like that im pretty sure there wouldn't be ONE old fan who said "gameplay > graphics!". Its 2009, we can have BOTH gameplay and graphics as seen over and over and over again now 5 million times, so get over that retarded cliché.

And yea "buhu play something else"... Fallen Earth could have been a great game because the sandbox and combat system seems to be allright... but when it looks like this? No f-ing way. I have self-respect.

Apparently not since you're trying to argue with FPS vs. MMORPG. But let's talk about games and graphics. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Remember that game? It was a great game and it had a lot of variety, but the graphics were kinda bleh, with the character graphics, other than the main characters, being pretty piss poor and textures were pretty minimal. The characters didn't even have fingers. Yet, the game was one of the better one in the series and the best selling game on the Playstation 2.

Your argument is purely subjective and opinionated. Trying to pass it off as fact or that your opinion matters over everyone else's is simply stupidity on your part.

In general MMORPGs have worse graphics than their regular-game counterparts.

I mean check out these ingame graphics of an RPG already a year or two old:

asset01.metaboli.fr/repository/DRAKE/fr/images/screenshots/original/drakensang0044.jpg

They ain't perfect or something, but the just look far smoother and... better.

Of watch a "lets play" part of that game:
www.youtube.com/watch

Now if an MMORPG would look like that, I'd immediately play it. :)

I guess one of the reasons why MMORPGs have worse graphics than "normal" games is, that they require so many years to be made.

There was a game once, with so much sex, nudity and ultra violence it sold some millions copies on those facts alone? Oh, and it was on a completely different platform btw.

And thats your response to my arguments? lol...

And if you havent noticed by now, all modern FPS type of games are becoming more and more MMO for every year.

As an old Quake 2 world champion and a great fan of EVE Online, i hope for a very good looking, mature, sandbox MMOFPS in the future. It will be done eventually, and when it gets done, it will be selling millions. Its not very hard to predict that future, is it? Just look at the general direction and draw your conclusions.

Do platforms really matter as far as games go since most are cross-platform anyway? But yes, it is my reply to prove that graphics don't make the game. It's an argument that has raged since Nethack or the original Castle Wolfenstein used to be popular.

FPS games are /not/ becoming more and more MMO. For one, they cap out at 64. Sure, there are a few that go higher, but the expense of running those types of servers doesn't justify the widespread use of them. Secondly, you'll notice they are generally bringing the numbers down, with Battlefield Heroes bringing it back down to 16, Left 4 dead at 8, etc. If you're trying to equate unlocks to levelling up, you're a bit off.

Quake 2 champion huh? What was your nick, because you certainly didn't play as Securion, because I've never heard of you. Eve Online's graphics are pretty simplistic in that it only has to show textures for a few items, compared to the millions of items in a land-based game. They even only show 2d pictures of your avatar.

Whether or not you can predict the future, you'll still whine about something about your new 'favorite' game because it's not how /you/ envisioned it or how it was supposed to be and it broke your heart and how could it do that to you when you loved it so much.

"Easy" only equals "better" for crack addicts and MMORPG developers.

Perhaps the OP should just stick with Aion. Let the non WoW crowd enjoy something different.  Sure the graphics may not be as flashy...but they aren't that terrible. I played since early beta and think the dismal colours kinda add to the game. You really get a feeling that you are wondering threw a wasteland. While I certainly agree, better graphics would make the game more visually enjoyable, it certainly does the job.

And why do we need flashy graphics? Let's see last year AoC and War both came along with pretty decent graphics. Well we see how much good it did for them to make a visually appealing. AoC graphics was the highlight of the game. The gameplay sucked...but boy...it sure looked good. And we all see how many people said "Wow...this game sucks! But the graphics are good...so I am gonna keep playing it for years!"

Ok, ill give you a 2/10 for trying though.

FPS games are /not/ becoming more and more MMO.

LOL!

... no wait, are you serious...?!?

For one, they cap out at 64.

Omg, they do?! Well it settled then! We cant have raids with just sixtyf.... no wait.

Sure, there are a few that go higher,

Yea a few, lol... like every FPS currently under development and every FPS released since 2006? ;)

but the expense of running those types of servers doesn't justify the widespread use of them.

What? :P

Secondly, you'll notice they are generally bringing the numbers down, with Battlefield Heroes bringing it back down to 16, Left 4 dead at 8, etc.

Oh, two of the games have less than 64 max players, and thats a sign that "they" are bringing the numbers down? As opposed to the leading industry ppl like ids Carmack that said large scale FPS combat is the future at E3 etc, etc, etc...?

If you're trying to equate unlocks to levelling up, you're a bit off.

Am i really?

Eve Online's graphics are pretty simplistic in that it only has to show textures for a few items, compared to the millions of items in a land-based game.

"simplistic"? "millions of items"? ...Omg... :P

They even only show 2d pictures of your avatar.

If you had played EVE you would know that the ship you fly is your "avatar".

I don't agree with the highlighted (which is not to say I agree with the rest, I'm just speaking to the highlighted part).

Game looks fine to me. The avatars are butt ugly. I don't mean they're badly done they're just ugly suckers.

Yeah, I've seen some characters that had faces only a mother could love...and in many cases I doubt that is even true, hehe. But those folks saying that they are 1990s graphics...well, I'll chalk it up to dramatic flair and bad memories.

EVE's biggest, and in a way only, problem is the network and server load and you know that. Mention any game that manages 1000 people on the same playing field that ofcourse meets up to your graphical reqs.

64 players on one server alone is hardly in your defintion of an MMO... regardless if they are raiding or not.  Stop acting like you think so, don't stupify yourself you won't gain anything out of it.

I was in the first round of beta testing for FE since way back in August of 2008 I think it was. I have tried and tried and tried to fall in love with FE, and there are tons of things to love. I love the skill system, I love the crafting. I love the genre, being a huge Fallout fan. I just love the feel of the game. I love almost everything about the game... but I have to be honest, the 1998 graphics just pull me right out and keep me from being immersed. I was also really not totally happy with the combat, but it did get better. I just wish they could have used a different engine or something... I so wanted to fall in love with FE, and I almost have, but with so much else going on in the industry to look forward to you really need to find your niche that you're truly happy with. Unfortunately for me FE doesn't look like it's the one...

Strangely 1998 ws the year fallout 2 released;

or DeltaForce (I loved this but buggy as arse)

and baldurs gate (err)

Oh my absolute fave of the time, TC R6

and these aren't MMO's so what about the mmo's?

Well we have the ever popular Lineage

mmm not heard of the other 98 games so lets move to 99 (whats a year between friends)

EQ

 you get the point?

Sorry but if you think the game is good or not is your opinion, but saying the games are comparable to1998 is utter arse.

They're simply trolling. Both sides have presented their views, so let people make up their own minds at this point, otherwise you're simply feeding their lack of ego.

Where the fuck do people keep getting the idea that the graphics are terrible?! I was in the beta and the graphics were great!

And I've seen a couple of screen shots posted in this thread, and it seems to me that it keeps up with the graphic standards in MMO's these days.

If you were talking about like.. Maple story graphics or maybe Lineage 1 graphics then ya, 1998 standards would be about that time frame but Fallen Earth is evolved past that. It fits the epic immersion of , "HOLY HELL THE WORLD HAS ENDED" and the ugly characters don't exactly have to be ugly, that is all up to you in the character design ( which I may add is also well put together ) .

So, graphics isn't a valid argument and if you think it is, you're just a very picky person and probably wouldn't be the best choice in game for you anyways, seeing as how you keep to the linear path of cartoonish graphics and shit.

Good luck in WoW.

Jesus guys I'm not saying the game sucks, or that the graphics are complete ass, but they ARE outdated and the engine is far from optimized at the moment. I in fact said that I loved everything else about the game EXCEPT the graphics, and to a lesser extent the combat, which is/was somewhat clunky for ranged. All they really need t do is apparently what they are doing, working on new textures, and tweaking and optimizing the engine... I supported this game for over a year by testing and reporting bugs, and was debating whether I was going to start paying for it right up to launch day. In the end I just felt that I couldn't afford it and wasn't sure if it would be able to deliver, in the end, what I was looking for in this type of game.

90's graphics? no. More like 2001 or 2002. Yes it hurts my eyes but crafting is so much fun that i try not to let graphics bother me :).
