I hear there is a massive grind from 26-30 (Not sure about 26-50?) I'm wondering why.

Lack of quests?

That sounds like the most likely culprit.

It's a Korean mmorpg, that's why.  Grinding is their obsession.

Putting a large number of quests and a non-linear plot into a mmorpg is a lot of work. The answer Aion came up with in lieu of this is to put a lot of grind in with a linear plot. It's not bad to play through once, but no way would I want to go through this twice with a character...too dull leveling.

Not everyone is the same it seems. I'm not planning to play a second char in Aion, but if I would, I would rather grind through levels, then do all the same quests again.   Too many Quests are just annoying to me.

Yes, if you take the massive effort of spending 2 hours to get to level 10, like all the other experts on the game, it will be linear just like every other starting area in an MMO.  Once you get to about lev 15, which I know is difficult for most of the people who can't find the locate button, you have quests all over the map, and it's a large map.   You  can run around the map all you want at lev 10;  there is nothing stopping you.  You are probably smart enough to finish lev 20 quests at lev 10 like you desire so go for it.

Actually, I think it's pretty linear all the way up.

We don't mean the quests are hard - that would be nothing short of hilarious.  The "grind" is because the quests are too simplistic, old and stale 5 years ago and serve no real purpose whatsoever. I've seen more depth in a glass of water, and railway lines that weren't as linear as Aion.  THAT'S the grind factor. Any pre-teen would be bored to tears with them the first time around, never mind for the 3rd and 4th character made.

Kill 1 in peace time and you are a murderer, kill 100 in war time and you are an hero!

Well the intensive grind is generally used to hide the lack of content.

Get some players to spend a loadcrap of time moving the exp bar 1% in the same area / zone and call it an MMO cos they doing it side by side with each other is an old formulae..

Then keep spawning ad eternum mobs over and over again like there was an imense everlasting srping of life bringing them from the dead and you get the typical Asian grindfest ;)

Aion, AoC, AC, AO, DDO, Eve, Eq2, GW, MW3, L1&2, RF, RIFT, SWG, SWTOR, TR, UO, WOW, WAR

The bold and underlined part just tells me that you never played a typical Asian gridfest game before, cause if you did you would know that Aion does not even come close to one.

Yes there is a bit of a grind but at least it is a bit of a challenge to some of us.

Granted the quests do thin out a bit after 21, but there are also repeatable quests to help you to the next level.

People got to remember that the game has been out less than a year with several patches to help fix gameplay and added content so far, given time i'm sure we will see more content and better gameplay.

...wait having stupid quests is a new thing to MMOs?  As i recall almost every MMO since Ultima Online has had this

WoW stupid quests to cover the "grind"/ EQ had stupid quests to cover the "grind"/ SWG had stupid quests to cover "grinds"/ LOTRO has stupid quests to cover the "grind"... I could go on and on but u get the picture.  Quests are to fill the "grind", its the reason many people dont even bother to read the actual quest, just the objective.  GG

Ohhh btw come on Bioware to provide a good story based MMO where you actually want to do the next quest...

Uhh... what?

Initially, SWG did not have quests for the "grind".

When it launched, there were no levels, just skills to get xp in.

There were mission terminals, but until they started paying out based on the group size, they were largely ignored.

Now there are levels and I presume quests to grind.

Quests in those early days though were just for fun, story, or (egad!) rp'ing!

 "The massive grind, Why?"

A) I would not characterize AION as having a MASSIVE grind.  Not even close.

B) EVERY MMO HAS A GRIND.

C) EVERY MMO HAS A GRIND.

D) AION is a very fun/addictive game.  Which prolly explains why new servers have been added, server caps have gone up and the games servers are FULL.  A boring MASSIVE GRIND would not have this type of activity in the US market.  Players, even ones who just bought the game would stop logging in if they werent happy with the gameplay and most people can tell you if they like a MMO in the first few levels.  The fact people keep logging in and playing after that initial decision period should tell you guys something about the very stable status of the playerbase.

I also find it funny how the OP and the first responder to this thread dont even play AION.

Oh, have u beta tested it?? No?? Then dont act like u know how the game is going to turn out...

Bioware has always delivered great story RPG's, just because it has MMO on the front of it doesnt mean it will be a mindless quest system.  In fact by having it already full voiced it has made the quests much more interesting to me.

Uhh... what?
