No. If you don't like it, then type /ignore name. Is it really that hard?
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed. |

Whats a real MMO then? No WoW didnt do anything new......but then neither do most MMOs. Most of them seem to follow the same formulae and build on it. WoW just followed that formulae very well......hence its popularity. WoW is a kid friendly cut-down version of EQ? Hardly. It simply took all the mindless mob grinding and dressed it up with quests and little stories to help disguise the repetitive gameplay. I have fond memories of playing the original EQ but if I went back to it now I'm pretty sure I would find it extremely boring. Even EQ's sequel followed exactly the same path as WoW. Kids were and still are quite capable of playing the original EQ. It wasnt that complicated ya know. I think you probably just have an inflated view of "the good old days". Oh and the industry isnt "suffering under the weight of its fanboys". Its making shit loads of money out of them. The old EQ is no longer there. Most of the old MMOs are not the same. The silly argument of "just go back to it!" is just empty air. Patches happen, games change, people stop playing them. Most MMOs DO bring something new to the table that hasn't been seen in another MMO before, even if its just one or two little things.
WoW did not do anything like that. Not a single solitary feature. Also, I would much rather grind mobs while having amusing conversations with people in groups than follow a magical glowing line across the map, to kill 10 boars for no apparent reason, bring back some hooves, and follow the next magical glowing line. Both are mindless, but one you can actually have fun doing and not just TRICK yourself into having fun doing.
I wasnt actually suggesting that you go back to playing an older MMO. However even if the original EQ was made ready and available for you to play as it was when it first came out, I doubt you would truly find it as wonderful as you seem to think it was. I still think nostalgia is clouding your viewpoint and you're just irritated and disgruntled that you no longer "feel the magic". I can relate to that though as I'm not particularly impressed with most of the MMO's that come out these days either. However I can still get some enjoyment out of them. I also know that the great time I had in those early MMO's had nothing to do with their quality. It was simply because it was a new experience. Besides if you dont like doing quests in MMO's (and yes they are indeed all a load of mindless shit......just like grinding) then just dont do them. Just because the quests are there it doesnt mean you have to do them. Nothings stopping you in most MMO's from just ignoring them. You can just stand in one place repeatedly pressing the same buttons over and over again to kill all of the identical mobs (they're all the same but they're just wearing different zip-up monster suits) while you watch an exp bar gradually creep up and use the chat channel as a Yahoo chat room. I would personally find that boring as hell but the option is certainly there. In fact I remember players used to do that in EQ2. There would always be a group of players gathered round a scarecrow-man, killing him over and over for hours and hours. Once they outleveled that they would move onto the next field and repeat the same thing with the next scarecrow-man. They just moved from one spot to the next, probably talking crap with each other while they did it. Whats stopping you from doing that? You can ignore an MMO's "content" any time you like. So yeah......you can either kill mobs, do quests and watch your exp bar go up for no reason while chatting to people about nothing in particular or just kill mobs and watch your exp bar go up for no reason while chatting to people about nothing in particular. What exactly is the difference? Oh and you think mindless grinding is fun but doing mindless quests is not? How does that make any sense at all, considering that to complete the OPTIONAL quests you have to actually grind mobs? How can you be "tricked" into having fun anyway? If something fools you into thinking you are enjoying yourself then......ermm......that means you ARE enjoying yourself. Thats what entertainment is good sir. Damn you MMO for tricking me into enjoying myself! All of that time I thought I was having fun but now I realise that it was all a lie and actually I hated every second of it! Damn you! |

We get this a bit on DDO now that its F2P. I see it as an indication that some people are more obsessed with TALKING about gaming, than actually PLAYING the game. I've learned to love my squelch list, but sometimes its easier to just turn off general chat completely.

"WoW people need to leave Aion" no they dont actually. Give them credit for trying something new and hopefully making a break away from that joke of a game.

I am glad that they are trying something new. I -do- fear they won't bother to even give it a chance once they realize it plays differently. I think OP was an overly emotional way to make a very good point - I see it as well, Aion general chat is full of people comparing every tiny detail to WoW. If I get asked about mounts or Raid Bosses one more time..! It is irritating, and very frustrating that people assume every MMORPG will be exactly like WoW down to the most minute detail. But, I guess we all had a first and second MMO and we asked the same sorts of questions, once... (Perhaps I'm jaded because of what that game did to D&D 4th Ed.) Many good points in this thread. |

OR
the fact that WoW invaded YOUR game....insults you somehow.
I think I hate both sides right now. I hate seeing "WoW" in any new game I play/test. And I hate the comparison whiners (mostly because they are morons who can't give valid points as to why they are whining) "This may hurt a little, but it's something you'll get used to. Relax....." |

Usually current game you play will always be compared to the game you used to play expecially with mmos. I remember comparing EQ2 and WoW to SWG when i left. Thats what usually happens. TBH like it has been said before there is very little difference between AIon and WoW. Hell even the community is pretty much the same sorry to burst this imaginery bubble most Aion players seem to be living in. AFK mercahnt loggers near the game spawn point with taunting messages....yeah very mature community there. |

Agreed. As an example, I actually saw Aion in a store this evening, although its amazing I was able to notice it. I was rather interested in seeing the game box on shelves, since I bought mine off Steam. So I moved aside the cardboard display for HDMI cables that was in front of the 5 little Aion boxes on the far left of the bottom shelf, and took a look. Nice looking box, metal, sorta reminded me of the deluxe X360 and Wii games I've seen. Reached back around the display, tossed it back on the bottom shelf, and glanced up at the entire row of Blizzard games, lining up the top shelf, right at eye level, and saw the reality of the situation for what it is. Subconsciously, I think whomever stocked the shelves knew the same thing, and definitely knew where Aion belongs. |

How can you compare the three you mention? EQ2 is the higher end graphical game, WoW is a more cartoony high fantasy game, and SWG fits NO WHERE NEAR EITHER!!! it amazes me how these comparisons EVER come about......it's like saying..."I like my tricycle, but a Toyota Tundra just has a bit better handling"

Yes of course how can you possibly compare them? The only things they have in common are...... A game world with its own lore Apart from those things they are completely different games. Yeah its totally amazing that anyone finds any reason to compare them. What on earth is wrong with people?! They must be mad! |

well when the game is SO similar to WoW what do you expect? There was a similar problem with WoW and EQ players.

Hehe-I'm glad they're here! WELCOME! Please enjoy Aion for what it offers and not compare it to WoW. Totally different games. |

I thinks it's about time NCsoft added "Wow" to its list of profanity. |

Quoted for the truth. For example i was playing wow and thought wow the crafting system sucks compared such a awesome and advanced system thats in star wars galaxies but also i was thinking that it does not take immense amount of time to create anything decent. When i was playing WoW i found that dungeons were great and really well done and nothing like that in star wars. Grouping with friends and actually doing an instance together rather then grouping to make the biggest missions in star wars made sense. There is so much to comare to see whats better and whats not. Yes Aion and WoW are 2 different games but the concepts of play are almost the same. Questing, stories, item drops, pvp concepts and can easily be comapred. I can even bet you that at least 90% of the aion players were once WoW players or tried WoW.

A very simple solution to this problem : Do not play WOW based copies. We saw it in TR, we saw it in AoC and we saw it in War. People started en mass to play mmorpg's with Wow, it is normal they compare it and want to try others. Oh btw, even in the most important launching week Aion hardly made a scratch on Wow number of players. Frightening really. It shows most people come have a look, wonder around and indeed go back to WOW, even in the first week of a hyped launch. |
