How exactly does this work? I pay the fee and only get to download it one time, or anytime i need it? I have some concern over this as from time to time I'll reformat my box and need to reinstall my games. Anyone know?

Anyway, if you get it from Direct2Drive, you can re-download again if needed.  It's stored in your account. 
I cant comment on the other places to buy it because I used Direct2Drive.

Once you do download it, just archive the install files to a hard drive or a couple of DVD's if needed.
Either route you choose, you should be able to get hold of the client whenever you want.

How long does it to DL/patch?

Thats a difficult one to answer.
It depends entirely on your connection speed.

I downloaded the client from Fileplanet during beta so cannot give you a fair estimate.

26 mbit. Usually the source which is the bottleneck.

It took me an hour to download for D2D last night then another hour or so to install and patch... installation seemed to take a while for some weird reason. I started downloading at about 4pm yesterday and was online playing by 6:30pm.

Just start it downloading and go do something else for a bit, time goes quicker when you're not watching the green bar.

Wouldn't this be just like any other online MMO purchase? Meaning that once you enter your key into your FE account you don't even need to download it from D2D ever again...just run the FE patcher, which should be a small file download right from the FE site, and it will download the entire game from there.

That's how it's always worked for me for online MMO purchases and I've done at least 4 now. All of which I have uninstalled and then reinstalled directly from the game site (not the purchase site).

My patching is taking about 5 hours after the download.... 1.5 hours to go!

 So, finally bought it!    Would have been sooner, but instead of letting me use Paypal where I have a nice little gaming money fund set..  Direct 2 Drive was being a P.I.T.A. and only took Credit Card..  So now, I'll get to hear wife bitching over it.  But oh well - hoping to have some fun with it tomorrow.   3:30am is a little late to be starting this, and got knows when the patching will be done!
