you spend a couple of hours in a fish-bowl zone with a massive invisible wall in it.... to complete some kill X quests, Theres one quest that actually makes use of the wings but its VERY uninspired, you then walk up to another area and guess what its a no fly zone.. pathetic.

QFE.  And why is there no flying allowed in the main cities?  Oh I'm sure it's for "immersion". lmao  Yeah because after grinding my ass off to hit max level I want to be grounded in the main city.  That would have been like WoW not allowing you to use your mount in Ogrimmar or Ironforge etc.  Don't get me wrong, Aion is a fine MMO without "major" problems like most US mmo's have at launch since it's already been released over seas.  I was just hoping for something a little better in this game but I'm happy for those that enjoy it.

Abyss, for fuck sake!

You can fly constantly in the abyss, of course you aren't going to be able to fly everywhere at level 13. Get a grip people.

Maybe he isn't a pvp player ? Though honestly, if anyone is playing this game for the pve then they will be majorly disappointed.

That's not exactly the way I would say it but it does have it's charm.

Players need to relax a bit. Flying gets longer with gear, wings, potions, etc. It is not a "hey I can fly all over the place" type of thing but rather something that is a decision to be made, a tactical decision at times. And as Twisted said, you can fly all the time in the abyss. I believe you will have to pass through these special rings for extending flight time but other than that, that is where the flying is.

If people would watch videos they will see that one can fly for quite some time at higher lvls in the regular areas.

You can fly indefinitely if you use the rings properly.  Each time you pass through the ring you gain upwards of 5 seconds of flight time.  Weave in and out of them and you can rebuff your entire flight bar while flying.

Well in abyss you can fly. But otherwise it's a ripoff.

Nah it's just called gravity.  The abyss has a higher concentration of aeyther and so you can fly longer.  And after you reach level 25, the abyss is where you will be spending the majority of your time.  You have to learn to walk before you can fly.

Oh, its awesome to be able to escape that train somebody left by going up a few meters. But then, if you don't plan it right your timer hasn't recharged, or worse, the monsters can fly ^^

Flight time needs to be limited for many reasons, one big one being that you just cannot have every mob able to fly or attack from range.

My biggest grief with the flying is that you cannot fly in the home city. WTF?! I am a guardian angel, literally, and there is a city full of angels, preparing for holy war...and we are walking from place to place like mortals. Give me a break!

Also...water. Ugh. How hard is it to swim, or at the VERY LEAST an animation that looks like swimming at the top of the water, like in LOTRO. There is no underwater content, but you can swim in the water, and it feels fine. People do NOT walk along the bottom of lakes. They just do NOT do that. That never happens. But that is another story.

I agree with both your points. The cities should allow flying and something needs to be done about water areas. Then again, I haven't seen many water areas other than starter elyos area and vertiron. If those are the only areas then swimming really isn't necessary.

OP

WHY do you need to fly EVERYWHERE? What are you going to do? Fly up on top of a mountain and hold hands with your guildmates? You can fly all you want in the Abyss. I suggest you try it ;). You should also read the lore and understand the whole idea behind their flying. It has to do with Aether and all that jazz. It doesn't bother me one bit to be honest. I saw someone mention Champions Online..LOL. Instanced fun!

From the looks of things I severely doubt Aion is gonna be particularly challenging for all of those "12 year olds" who you say are currently playing WoW. It looks like an ordinary mmo to me and about as simple to understand as all the rest. Have you done a survey of all of those WoW players by the way? How many 12 year olds are currently playing it then? I'm curious to know.

EVE Online a complex game? Yes. DAoC (or its sequel which we will likely never see) a complex game? Ermmm no. A great game sure but hardly complex or challenging to understand. The only challenging aspect of these standard mmos seems to be from the PvP but then that could apply to any game. Aion looks like another simple one to me. Fun maybe and possibly one I might try out but certainly not a complex mmo by any stretch of the imagination.

Well but... they knew from the start that they're going to implement flying, right? Why did they create content then that doesn't work if you can fly? So that they were forced to disable flying so the PvE content ain't screwed up?
I'd rather expect them to create content that specifically works with flying as a kind of additional advertisment and seperate it from other games. Instead of taking the normal MMORPG content and disabling what many people like so much about Aion.

Makes no sense to me.

What you said describes the Abyss. My advice to you and the other idiots in the thread. "GET THERE".

Abyss = Full flight eneabled areas

Abyss = A ton of content + quests that require flight

Abyss = The meat of the game

Also, to the other people comparing aion to WoW in saying you have unlimited flying area in WoW. BS, it was only Burning crusades when that first came out, and that was an expansion. FYI, Abyss = Burning crusade; Tons of flying. I understand your complains, but get your facts straight. You are all making this out to be some endgame boss encounter which it is far from.

Zork was too easy. UO\'s PVP had 99% scrubs that you would just farm.

You are never going to be satasfied with the complexity of MMOs, if you are, it wil be in the form of a contradiction to what you just said.

You have strategic open world RVR in the abyss while being able to fly anywhere there, and this was at aion's release. And it manages to be a ripoff? Burning crusades must have been a SCAAAAMMM

Isn't it a shame the fanbois are providing solid reasons to why 99% of the people in this thread are judging a game before they even hit the primary part of the world. You should listen to fanbois more often, they actuall know how to spot someone judging a game by the newb zones.

If you don't like the gliding that's a personal problem and remains 100% subjective. But the fact is, the fanbois are providing more solid evidence to why this is purely a QQ im lvl 13 and I don't even realise the game changes later on. Type thread. All this is, is a bunch of people who couldnt get into the game moaning about no flight zones.

If you think gliding is BS, I think you made a $$$$$$ finanial mistake. That's too bad. But then again, the more threads like this, the closer I am to winning a year old bet I made on how many whiny children the game would get.

You can glide in cities and there are many areas that are optimized for flying in both capital cities.  In Pandemonium, I love gliding down from the main stairway all the way down into the Temple.  It's tough to get it just right so you don't land until you are actually in the Temple, but it can be done.

I'm assuming you can't fly in a city for the same reason you can't fly in Dalaran, it would just create extreme clutter.  The main city does not have channels unlike the leveling areas so everyone that plays the game can be in one channel at the same time in the same place.  I'm impressed that I get no lag at all in Pandemonium when it's chock full of people.   (unlike another popular MMO that simply cannot support the number of people in it's capital city and is a lag fest after YEARS of being out)

I certainly wouldn't want to give up my lag free capital city just so I can free fly.  Besides, learning how to glide is a very fun mini game in itself.

If swimming is that big of a deal for you, then I guess this is the wrong game for you.   Underwater quests were always a pain as far as I was concerned.  There are a few winged creatures that can swim underwater, but not many.  I guess Elyos and Asmodians fall under the category of things with wings that can't swim. I would rather be an Eagle than a Penguin any day!

Lol...well this is a nice way to put a bow on a major design flaw but I do get what you're trying to do.  But facts are facts and the fact is that you can walk into water easy enough and even walk on the bottom with no issue of drowning, the only time this isn't true is in deep water.  But all that aside it's a simple fact that they did not put in any animation for swimming, treading water, or hell even drowning...at least do SOMETHING, don't just make it pretty but when you're character interacts with it it's the same as walking on land.

I just want to state in an easy way why you cannot fly everywhere and forever. I will even break it down for some of you that cant get it through your heads.

1) All MMORPG's have lore that the game SHOULD follow.

2) According to AION lore the reason daeva's can fly is because there is a special substance called aether that allows it

3) It is specifically stated in the lore that aether is sporadic around the world of Atreia, and some zones have a larger concentration then others, thus you cannot fly but can glide in certain zones more then others.

4) NCsoft limited flying on purpose to make it a much more strategic part of Aion, this isnt wow so stop trying to compare flying around as a aesthetic vs an actual combat alternative.

5) This is a game design decision, if it is one you do not like, they you do not have to Play Aion.

As a personal opinion, Aion flight has been integrated in the game perfectly for what its purpose is. Flying is not solely for a means of travel but it is also a means of strategic importance.

When lineage 2 was released there was no swimming either.  You simply walked along the bottom of the water.  You didn't even have a health bar!  You could walk straight down the river, it was sick.

My point is that Lineage 2 now has swimming, drowning animations, breath bar... etc.

I'm sure it'll be patched in, it's just the little things like class balance took priority.
