...tend to defend their game of choice almost religiously. If someone doesn't like the game you play...well...so what??? Is it the end of the world if someone can't stand the graphics, the story or the extensive grind of your favorite MMO??? I get the need to defend thing you like, but getting angry and rude over it. Is it really any need??? Why not just ignore them??

Then there's the other question...Why do MMO gamers...or again...gamers in general...feel the need to make fun of the games other people play...It's not like the other people are stupid, because they can't see the 'benefit' of your game is it???? Do they really need to be playing your game to be 'cool'.

Taste is like the ass people...it's divided. I'm rather new on this forum...I know that...but in the time I have been here, I have seen so, so many threads ending up in just general shit throwing...and yes...I know by posting this I probably just inflame another shitstorm. I just had to post it, because there's no need to be so freaking rude all the time...and it's not fun having to wade through hours of needless and childish fighting to get to a good point in a thread...

Some likes the daughter, and others go for the mother...it's a fact of life.

Sorry but there's a difference between:

Hey so I tried X game and it sucks ass a proper epic fail!!

And

Hey I tried X game but after playing it for several hours/minutes I got it's not for me, what are your thoughts?

Now if those that don't like a particular game go for 2nd type of topics OR ATLEAST provide real issues there wouldn't be flamings.

Yeah, I played Aion for some days and it was a total failure for me. When I told it gently on forum, a group of hungry superEGO angry Aion fans were about to kill me. Also they found that i don't speak english very well. Thanks, I know that.

I agree of course, but when you take a look at the most of the big threads on this forum, you'll see most of the first category and you have to wade through all of them before you find the good posts from the second kind. Constructive and politely formed criticism has never hurt anybody, and was never the target of the above post...

If people wouldn't do this, there would never be a problem with people defending their game. Solve this problem, pretty much solve the other. That will never happen though. People feel to important to shut up, if they dislike something,  they gotta let the entire world know.

I don't understand pressing the issue of your tastes on others. I don't go into the Guild Wars Forums saying "this game is bad because I don't like the way it is". Actually, after I try a game I won't even post about if I dislike it. I may agree with somebody on some feature that seemed to lack any excitement for me, but I also understand its appeal to others.

Don't try to be the victim now I saw your thread from page 1 to the last page before it got deleted.

First you made a thread with a title Aion - Epic Fail then said that the maps are mean, didn't provide any real issues other then personal view and your post clearly meant that aion sucks not that in your opinion aion sucks (even though sucks is a bit extreme since it has all servers high duh)

The MMO genre as a whole is a running joke considering a 5+ year old game is so dominant.

Because everyone is a critic, even for the stuff they personally like, whether it's video games, music, movies, or what not. When someone else comes around telling you they personally didn't like a game that you for one loved. That little critic in the back or your minds pops out and starts killing the experience you had in the first place.

For instance, I've been playing Fallout 3 a lot lately and have been enjoying every minute of it. Is the game perfect? No! But I've managed to enjoy it anyways, when someone else comes around telling me the first two Fallouts were WAYYY better and the third one sucked. They pretty much release that nagging critic that's been in the back of my mind that has allowed any faults of the game not bother me up til now.

But now I don't feel that way when I have to listen to why the other person didn't enjoy the game, and it doesn't matter how strongly opinionated you might be it still manages to kill the experience a little.

An opinion can really make a game shine, or turn into a complete killjoy....and that's the root of all the bickering you see on the webzzzzz.....0o

That was the best flame session I have ever seen on these forums this morning.  It put me in a great mood, minutes before I walked out the door to go buy my copy of Aion.  And in return we got that "Epic Mean Map" to show for it! =D

Yeah, everyone as gamers tend to grab a title for themselves. I’m an EVE player, I’m a WOW player, I’m a Darkfall player and so on. With each title, comes the background and stereotype behind.

I know when someone bashes my favorit game, I often want to immediately jump back and reply.

Greed104 is right though, if you dislike something, just shut up about it. There is nothing constructive about disliking something. The devs won’t change the game for you, nor will the game ever become better when you post the reasons behind your dislike. If you dislike the game, just walk away and find another one that you like. As I said twice, people associate themselves to a game and that’s natural. Saying that you dislike their game means that you dislike them and there is no other way to put it.

People believe that they’re being constructive about it but seriously, they’re not. I personaly enjoyed Darkfall for the time I’ve played it. After a series of event, I left the game and do not like the game anymore. Which also means, that I don’t visit the forums nor post about it anymore. However, go look at the forum right now and you’ll notice that most forum wars are from non-playing members lol

I respect someone's opinion, as long as it's informed. I only defend games when people get something wrong or misunderstand parts of the game. As far as their opinion goes, they have the right, just so long they don't start spreading wrong rumors.

I do it mostly, because there was alot of negative rep around SWG pre-CU and I missed out on about 90% of pre-CU because of it. And now I can't go back.

It's the way our brains are wired.

Our brains love encapsulating complex patterns into simple ideas.  This saves us from having to suffer through the lengthy process of active thought when we come across the pattern again.

Our brains are also limited physically in terms of how many people we can coexist peacefully with (article: What is the Monkeysphere?)

Between these two traits, "us vs. them" emerges.  It encapsulates the pattern nicely to say that everyone not part of Us is inferior in some way.  "Us" being any sort of group you identify with:

  • Players of videogame X.  (ie the MMORPG you play)
  • Members of faction Y  (ie "Alliance players are stupid")
  • Players of class Z  (ie "Rogues are jerk kids.")

(These brain traits are important for forum posts too.  For some readers, they'll never read this sentence I'm writing because it's too deep in a post which is no longer short and simple (but instead is about some random "Axehilt" guy talking nonsense about the brain when he only learned it thirdhand from a book on Game Design written by a guy who himself learned it from someone.)  Basically our brains hate being bogged down by information they deem is "too detailed" - much like my explanation about the book was too detailed.

So even reading forum posts, brains actively try to encapsulate patterns into simple ideas.  It's part of why a lot of readers will skim, and read the first sentence of each paragraph to get the idea of what's being said.  Which is why it's good to summarize each paragraph in the first line if you can ;)  )

I may be sorta harsh on EVE, but damn is this a cool trailer (EVE Dominion).

As long as it's within the forum rules. Traffic helps this site you know. And if someone post a topic, people will reply. Discussion about games is good. Even negative discussion. As long as we keep it clean. Usually the first one to go personal is the one with no valid argument. Discussion about other posters is off-topic.(99% of the time) Use the report button or argue their points.

There are exceptions of coarse, and we all fall to the temptation. Very, very few are innocent here. And again, traffic helps this site.

This.  And it doesn't just pertain to video games.  Every topic on the internet is like this.  Just look at all the stupid responses on youtube alone.

Just to add another factor that I think adds to the heated discussions that often erupt into flame wars:

Miscommunication.

I first began to notice this on a PvP Thread where every person had a different definition of pvp.

If you ask somewhat what Newbie is, some people will say "someone who just started playing the game". Others will say, "Someone who has not yet experienced end game" and yet others will attach an active time limit to it.

Same with PvP. In the thread I mentioned, one person defined PvP as honorable equal numbered combat. Other people defined it more chaotically, stating that it didn't have to be equal numbered to be PvP. The end result was, of course, a flame fest.

I sometimes wonder if we had set forth static definitions for terms when MMOs first started up, would we still have as much miscommunication ending in flames?

Yes, we would. But, information you seek can be crystal clear if you are only looking at words and meaning, without letting yourself judge the poster. It's hard, and sometimes easy depending on your situation. Usually it's just normal human behavior. People take their hobbies seriously. And people can post in circles when there is no such thing as being wrong on video game forums. Have fun is all I can say.
