I really doubt it, unless they plan to appeal to solo players in some way. It will mostly stick with the current numbers of XI and maybe a few extra players.

I'm surprised no one has said DUST 514. O.o I know it's probably going not come out in '11, but the fact that CCP is trying to add metagaming as an explicit function of EVE and DUST seems interesting and possibly game making or breaking.

i think FFXIV have an interesting game play system which i can guarantee it's still hard to be found in most MMO now days

FFXIV will have nothing to do with FFXI player based whatsoever , so FFXI will still have their own players and FFXIV a whole different players, as stated by the developer, the game play will be totally different,

yes, while i agree majority of the FFXI will most likely switch to FFXIV, but i believe with the new system SE Implemented , oh yes it will be quite a big thing, i guess time will tell

The "next" big MMO is undoubtedly going to be SW:TOR.

It has the Star Wars IP.
It has a leading developer with Bioware.
It's being made for the mainstream market.

There are no sure bets in the MMO world, but TOR is pretty close.

There are 4-5 big mainstream MMO"s coming out between 2010 and 2011 that have the money to produce a quality game with content.

1.  SWTOR  They have the money to make a good MMO.  Many people do not like the solo design but all big budget MMO's will have solo content.  Bioware has promised to go with the WoW formula of having content for everyone.  Solo, group and raid.  Can they do it and make a fun quality game?  It is easier said than done.  But with the IP of Star Wars they could make a ton of money if they take their time and release a quality game witha  somewhat finished endgame.  Bioware is known for quality, polish and taking their time.  It is hard to believe they will release a bad game.  It may not be what I like or what many older MMO players want but I bet its a well done game that will do very well.

2.  FF14  They will likely be using the FF11, L2 and Aion model where they make their money from the far east market with some small revenue from the western market.  The hope here is without needing money from western gamers they will not have to dumb down and simplify the game to much to attract the ADHD brainless 18-25 year old American kiddie audience.  But then again making a  game without levels makes one wonder if the game is going the easy mode route already.

3.  Heroes of Telara  Many people say that Trion has big money behind them to make this game.  I would love to see more proof of that than a few people posting on the internet.  Some cool ideas here with being able to switch classes, a raid focused game when there are so few quality raiding games and their whole server side technology idea (believe it when they show it works).  But the bottom line is this another indie dev company talking big or do they actually have the money to develop a quality game.  They say they have been in development 3.5 years and beta is scheduled to start this fall.  Hopefully we should learn more soon.

4.  Blizzard's unnanounced new game They have been working on this game for 3+ years now.  Say what you want about Blizzard but they make quality games and released them in finished states.

5.  NCsofts unnanounced new game Some really good devs from vanguard and other games working on this game.  NCsoft wants to make a western market sci fi game. They plan on using some ideas from other games like Vanguard's crafting and diplomacy systems, Warhammer's public quest system along with a raiding focus.  They have the money to make a AAA game, the devs and some good ideas.  Supposedly they have been working on it for over 3 years now.  Which could mean we are due to hear a lot more soon or that they have had problems along the way with their ideas or financing.

Outside of those 5 possibilities I cannot think of a game in development that has the money to be a top notch mainstream game.  How many of those will actually make it to release?  3?  4?  How many will be worth playing?  Hopefully we will get 1-2 decent games out of this list.

There isn't one on the horizon. The next big things are Aion and SW:TOR... but you don't like Aion or Sci-Fi.

The Star Wars MMO is more of a single player game than anything, not worth really mentioning as an MMORPG.

Yes, a game will an open world, pvp, grouping, end game, classes, progression, socializing, crafting, multiple locations (in this case, planets) make this game a single player.

Flaming for the sake of flaming, eh?

But yeah, pretty much everyone I know thinks the game looks like it has more Single Player aspects to it than MMORPG aspects.... including myself. It doesn't help that the company that's releasing it, has created some pretty damn good SINGLE player games, but no MMORPGs. There is a such thing as MORPGs, you know. Look at GW.

It has been said a million times by Bioware that the game will be every bit as much of an MMORPG as other games on the market. I don't know why so many of you continue to insist that the game will be single player.

Apparently you people either can't read or just refuse to listen to anything Bioware actually says about their game. Either way, it doesn't make your assertion that TOR will be single player any more valid.

Easy answer. People are constantly screaming for innovation, ToR seems to be bringing this about, by introduction a fluent highly interactive story that affects both your characters progression and morality. When the people finally get something innovative, they destroy it, because it stepped outside the boundaries of the norm, as of now. I'm not really up to change his or anybodys mind, only BioWare can do that. Plus, they obviously have no intrest in the game since you find yourself explaining things to them released awhile ago, or they are just lazy followers.

It is irrelevant anyway. Who cares about label of games? If a game is good, I will play it. This talk about whether TOR is a MMORPG, or a SP game with online element is just silly.

Most people probably don't care about it anyway. They will care if the game is fun to play .. fun enough to warrant watever Bioware will be charging.

I agree that SWTOR will be the next big release. Whether you call it a true MMORPG or not, it looks like a whole lot of fun to me.

However I think TERA looks very promising and now they have released a North American website (http://www.tera-online.com) that mentions a possible 2010 release.

I think the new Blizzard MMORPG is too off to anticipate.

For the record... I never said it wouldn't be a true MMORPG. Look at the first reply to the OP... that's me. I just said what a few others and my opinions were about it and that the more I hear about it, the less enthused I get.

It DOES look like it has more single player elements to it than multiplayer, but I also mentioned that I hope that's just the way I'm perceiving their innovation and it's just simply something new I'm not used to.

i think this site did a top 10 games this year list at the start of the year.   The results pretty much summed up that this would be by far the weakest year for MMO's in a while.  The only big name releases this year have been Darkfall and Aion and well..Darkfall wasnt the most picturesque launch and its a very niche game.

2009 is the crap year for MMO's...hopefully 2010 will be better.

We don't even get StarCraft 2 this year. Here's hoping Dragon Age doesn't get delayed. Maybe I'll give Free Realms a shot just to say I was there.

Idk about Darkfall, dead game is dying.... but FE may not be a "big game" when compared to giants, but I guarantee that in a year each one of the devs will be making more per month than you will cumulatively make in your entire life. While, it may not be a giant, it does fit the description of "big".

I think you overestimate the profit margins of an MMO.

Heh, not really. It was mean to be a discreet insult, lol.

They will be wealthy, easily multi-millionairs if they keep their footing, though.

ROFL, the laughter keeps coming.  Developers making millions.  Oh make the laughter stop, it hurts.

On a serious note:  Even on the rare occasion that a game breaks even, it isn't the devs who get the rewards, it's the financial backers who put up the money to make the game.  Games are a high risk investment and to get financing, developers have to sell their soul...and all their potential profits.  Trust me, no one at Turbine or Mythic is a millionair unless they had made those millions before joining the company.  And I doubt Fallen Earth is even going to have the success that those companies had.

I have been hoping some other company would steal Mythics public quest idea.  With all WAR's faults, public quests were a great idea and it deserves to get copied.

Oh god here we go again. This is the problem with not only current generation of mmo players but also the threads here at mmorpg. I use to post here a lot almost everyday. Lately I do not post to often since all I see here is game/company haters and this idea that there are no good mmos and that we have to wait for the next big thing.

I have been active in mmos since 1996 with Meridian 59. I can tell you this, there have never been so many choices and great mmos to choose from. The OP names 4 good mmos. Why not play one of them fully? Has the attention span of the mmo players dropped to about 30 seconds? I prefered the days when the players fully explored an mmo. It seems players today need the "next big thing" and never really experience what is possible in an mmo. This hurts all of the players especially the loyal ones who want to experience all an mmo offers. If all you are doing is waiting for the next big mmo it might be time to leave this genre and go back to single player games that last a month.

One thing that would help this is no open betas. Make a beta test what it really is a test to improve the game not a marketing tool. It is time companies trust their ideas and creativity and not change everything based on players early reactions. To many companies and players are looking for the next WOW. This stifles creativity and originality.  Keep waitng for the next big thing but until you start supporting the good games that are out and really learning how to play them, you will keep getting cloned crap, unfinished games, and good games closing their doors. Good luck OP you will never find the next big mmo because when you do you will just leave for the next next big thing.
