My geForce 8800 512 blew up playing on medium-high settings. Funny, the game even with my lower end card ran smooth as butter until my card just overheated and died.

The card was old, needed replaced/upgraded... it played WoW just fine, but looking for something good to run Aion on high settings and PvP no problem and look good, too.

Suggestions?

Helps to know your price range.

Though as a side note, my 8800 GT is doing just fine...

Depends on how much you want to spend and how long you are willing to wait for the next new big thing.

If you don't mind waiting and splurging a bit, wait for the 5870, its just around the corner.

I'm in Canada, so US vs CAD prices are a bit different, let's just say around $200 CAD give or take, but willing to go higher for a card that would knock the socks off my nVidia 8800 GT 512 mb card.

I was running the game ok, only minute lag here are there - lots of nice spell effects etc..., but my card would start going a bit crazy and shut down. The last shut down burned it up. I installed the same exact 8800 GT in my computer from my husband's PC and I get the same error. I'm not going to risk burning up another card, I'd die without internet :P

Things are OK on lower settings with the 8800 GT, but the game looks yucko on low and I'd rather not play it at all if it won't look good and run fast.

Now Playing: AoC
Played
Warhammer - This game lacks fun.
SWG (2 years) - When it was badass, holocron hunting equaled epic :).

FFXI ( 3 years ) - Still one of my favorite games, sadly they took combo chaining out.

WoW (3 years) - Waste of my life.
Games Not worth mentioning: Tabula Rasa, RF Online ( I paid the 50 bucks!),

EVGA is the bomb. Best customer service anywhere, well besides newegg. When my EVGA 680i motherboard died, I rma it and EVGA sent me a 780i. Sure it was used, but who cares, it was a upgrade, I wish thrilled. I've seen people with with the 8800GTX rma it and EVGA sent them new 260GTX. I guess they lucked out and EVGA must of ran out of stock on the 8800GTX and 250GTX. You can't go wrong with EVGA.

My 8800GT 512 worked fine on max settings and there was a sea of people around me at server open. Maybe the problem is something else, and not your car? Such as the fan, the case, or something else preventing your card from cooling?

Very possible that it's something else. One easy cheap fix is to open up my tower and put my deskfan on it if I notice it getting too hot with my husband's 8800 card.

I think for budget, the 260 is a good fit for my needs. I am a bit surprised though that there aren't more card options, seems the games are starting to exceed available cards.

Aion runs smooth on the 8800 gt, but I can see the game visually has so much more to offer in terms of graphics.

8 hr session today 1920 x 1080 max settings on everything started overheating my 2 x 9800 GTX's :)

giving the machine a couple of hour break and ordering some aftermarket cooling for them as they are the stock nvidia ones.

The 4850 does a snazzy job and will cost you just under $100, or you can do better with the 4870 at $135.  If you're not looking to spend big bucks then that's the way to do it.

I run the 4850 and Aion is nothing.  I tested 24x AA last night and experienced stutter only when loading into a new area.  I'll drop it to 16x AA next time.
