I just watched a few gameplay videos on youtube and most of them i see players fighting mobs and taking sometime over 1 minute to kill a single mob.  You see the mob get hit and it's HP bar is barely decreasing.    Damage vs Mobs HP ratio seems really strange in AION.

Which videos are you watching, it may be those mobs they are fighting are elite, they do take a bit to bring down even in a group.

well to be honest in aion you dont run around 1 shotting things like in alot of games since wow started the trend of speccing to get a crit that can kill anything not on a raid in 1 hit.  aion at least makes you put in the effort of a combo or 2.

Yeah, mobs in Aion tend to have A LOT OF HEALTH compared to those in WoW.

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

WoW didn't start the one shots by any means.

Aside from that, it's just the approach Aion takes to combat. Slower equals you have more time to stare at your character swinging, pausing a moment, swinging again, and pressing your way through the hotbar attacks and convenient combos that chain themselves for you, which to Aion seems to mean 'win' in some odd 'we don't cater to gamers who have any form of a reflex' language.

Not to be harsh, they just went for a slower pace in combat. Some seem to think it makes the game more tactical. Some think it just makes it drawn out and plodding. If you don't like free time while in the middle of a duel to cook some popcorn, then Aion might not be for you.

Eh...it works...

MMOs I remember: AC, AA, DAoC, EQ, EQ2, L, L2, PS, LOtrO, DDO, Planetside, BE WW2, WoW, Ryzom, SWG, TR, CoX, HL, DR, PT, Exteel, Guild Wars, AO, Archlord, Dreamlords, Atlantica, Entropia, EVE, FF XI, Maple Story, Ogre Island, Planeshift, Rappelz, RFO, Runescape, MXO, SotNW, SL, Vanguard, UO, WAR, PotBS.

Mmos I subscribe to: Real Life 2.5, now with full alcohol/inebriation simulation!

Yes, and they tend to actually 'fight back'. Even as low as lvls 10-20, monsters pretty regularly had a few skills rotating under their belts. You can't really 'afk' kill things in this game, unless you are fighting things way below your lvl.

OP: To be honest, the only mobs I've need to spend over a mintue killing, are elite mobs within 3-5lvls of my character. This is true for just about every class I've played. The only class I seemed to generally take a while to kill things with was the cleric, but i could still do it in about 30-50seconds for most mobs. Every other class, by lvl 10-13 could kill mobs as much as 2-3 lvls higher in under a minute, and some could manage it within 30seconds. Really, it's all about being prepared, having odella powder, using your manastones, and maybe some food will help tremendously in this game.

Well, I'm no expert but my beta Gladiator killed stuff amazingly fast. Normal mobs were dead in 3-4 combos. I played Spiritmaster for a bit too and honestly it seemed faster to just stay a Sorcerer. When I was straight  mage I was killing even con mobs in about 3 spells. I found you feel really powerful while leveling up in the classes I tried, not sure how the other classes fared.

I suppose if you just auto-attack it might take a long time, dont' really know though, I prefer to interact with my character while I'm playing it. The more I pay attention to the fight, and use the abilities I have, the faster they go. I thought thats what we were supposed to do.

I've never felt combat was slower than any other MMORPG while playing. Well, sometimes it felt that way with my Chanter, but my Assassin and Spiritmaster kill pretty quickly relative to other games.

It may be an issue for some people with the lower DPS classes, but for most classes combat has seemed well paced for me.

Oh, don't judge it my low level first impressions either. You start with very few skills. Most classes will already be killing much faster at level 5 than level 1. Not related to the videos someone likely has seen, but just a heads up for people who will be playing for the first time at headstart or launch.

Maybe it's the different downtime prevention mechanisms that are confusing people.

OK.

Stop watching videos. It's best to play/trial the game yourself.

Properly geared for your level vs a mob 2 levels higher, it doesn't take more than 30 seconds (less actually) to spank it. As a chanter! Proper DPS classes spend less time I've seen and just keep steamrolling the mobs. Downtime varies from class to class of course.

Chanter is pretty good at surviving for a while whilst making something wish it would die faster. The Warrior at lvl 9 just turns into pure awesome pwnage but you have to figure out how to unleash that pwnage effectively.

This is not a game.

Misinformed by what regard?

Also think ye lumped me in with those saying it's slower than WoW and whatnot, which I'm not.

I preordered and played a cleric and ranger to 48 and 36 respectively, before getting bored and deciding I wasn't gonna play release. I actually have hands on time in it.

From what I played, the games pacing felt slow. I'm aware the classes I played aren't the fastest at dishing out dps in the game, but there's still the baseline to cater to.

The mmo I currently pay/play right now on occasion is DDO. You know how fast most mobs die in that? If it takes more than 3-5 seconds, you're doing it wrong. You know how long it takes in Aion on average? While it'll only take a minute if yer plodding like a snail and more to 30-40 seconds fighting tougher mobs(out of normal level range), it's still closer to 15-20 seconds or so for normal mobs.

Now while that doesn't look that long in and of itself. It spells wonders of implications for multiple target combat and the amount of time one will waste waiting for everything to die.

It may be overboard of me to say the game is 'actually' slow, but by my standard it really is. There's a difference between having time to think and react and having time to think and react and then ponder your navel for a moment before having to do anything else.

Aion IS slower. Slower than most MMOs? Hells no, it's pretty close to on par. It's high damage attacks though are mitigated by it's leveling and combat mechanics though, and for the most part your bigger strike will be more effective PvE where you don't have everyone standing around in armor that's meant to mitigate your damage types.

Aion is an mmo. It's been built for a wide general audience. It is not hard, it is not amazingly deep. It is slow. I wouldn't call WoW particularly faster or slower either. You can waste a decent amount of time on trash mobs in that game too. It's by design though in both cases. But I restate my point. The game is slow. It was made slow like plenty of other MMOs to cater to the general audience of the modern gamer, who is slow and relatively unskilled.

And now to wait the mandatory 15 seconds to let that sink in...

I'd like to know why he's "misinformed." Combat IS slower than a lot of MMOs out there. I'm confused as to what game you were playing.

I mean, c'mon, they lowered PvP damage by upwards of 40% with the last patch - doesn't that tell you that they are going for a "slower" combat than most MMOs? Not to mention the regular 2 dot mobs in Aion have a lot of HP (compared to most MMOs and their solo mobs), and most classes will need to rest after a few fights to regain hp and/or mana (Cleric and SM are the exceptions to this, in my experience).

Please enlighten us all with your vast knowledge of Aion's game mechanics because clearly we are all in the dark.

Edit: Heh, seems I should not have taken a phone call while writing this post - Deivos has already stated all this and more in his post.

Ok..because as a Chanter who doesn't do "that" good of damage I can kill mobs in 20-30 seconds. The thing about this game is you can't really just take on 3-4 mobs at a time as an Assassin. So..I don't know about all that.

Wow..that is impressive.  Considering there was a level cap of 30 on the Open Beta.

This is also a change from, say, WoW, where you could generally solo multiple mobs at the same time and not be any worse off. Aion will generally force you to take one mob at a time - at most you may be able to swing two with some lucky digital dice-rolls and through intelligent use of CDs.

Aion is built to have longer fights. What a dumb idea, right? Not really. The animations and such are better then most MMO and they're just as quick. So if we are talking slow by longeviity of fights then yes it is. Which is great.

Slow at the early lvls but when your char matures over time combat speed picks up. More skills & better gear stat's, but the fights may still take awhile depending on what your fighting.

I'm not sure if you took what I posted to wrong way or if I was just unclear, but I certainly am not bashing Aion. I enjoy the combat very much and enjoy the "slow" pace of it. I was simply asking why nblitz was calling out Deivos.

Yeah in aion mobs aren't whimps like in most games they are actually challenging sometimes and you need to be careful.

It's more realistic from for example a gnome beating a kodo in 3 hits >_>
