Which better MMO?

If you had to pick one or the other, which would you pick and why?

One is not even in beta yet and other is 6 years old....you cant really compare them yet.

You can't compare these games about the only thing they have in common is they involve space travel.

Indeedy. I do like EVE... just cant get myself to stay in it because I feel so alone and behind everyone else he he. I am a huge Trek fan and hoping I will enjoy the STO gameplay enough to stay with it when it is out.

Hmm, I'll only start playing EVE online again when you can finally walk around in stations. If Star Trek Online does not have a character that you can control outside of your ship, I probably won't even bother trying it, but that's just me~

I'd pick STO, because it's not out yet, so I can't play it, and I'm pretty much sick and effing tired of playing MMOs right now.

I never got into EVE so STO wins by default. Those that did like EVE can't say which they will like better because the game hasn't even hit beta yet.

How could anyone compare these games? the space setting?

Eve's been around six years, It's evolved for six years. While Sto is in what alpha?

What do you do? Wake up one day and go "These games are Sci-fi, Lets make a VS thread!!!!" with no real thought behind it?

As a oldschool Trekker I look forward to STO but to even consider putting this game in the same sentence as EvE is crazy talk.

The games are far too different and appeal to completely different sectors of the gaming community... I believe it's called apples to oranges, they are both fruits, and generally similar, but at the same time very different. Which will make this subject divisive even though there is no real comparison between the two games beyond the genre.

For the record, I played EVE online for some years and enjoyed it. From what I know about STO so far, it is also a game that I might enjoy. However, IMO it is way too early to make any solid judgment about STO or whether I will like it better than EVE Online.

I get what you mean op. Not compare as in content or playability but in design.

Hmm....

Well I would say I like the idea of sectors, seamless world and complexity that EvE has but it seems like a game for those who like  number crunching and economy. Wouldnt like to see that in a ST game.

Now I feel that STO seems to focus on a action type of game, get in get out no real substance just quick easy time killer (fun is selective).

Combat seems like most fantasy mmos. And the idea of everyone a captain flying there own ship in group encounters just seems kinda cheesy.

I always saw ST like the scene from that STNG movie with them in the holo deck playing sailors. But what made it enjoyable for me was the science (sci fi to be technical). Tolkien had mythology and Rodenbury(cant spell) had science; with there own twist on it (even bought his non ST comics).

Long story short  I would rather see STO be a EvE copy than a wow clone.  But I would rather STO be ST.

But no big deal stop likeing ST when Babylon 5 aired.  Now if Cryptic got the rights to a Bab 5 game.  Well I dont want to leave any incriminating evidence.

There's really no comparison to be made here. As everyone else has all ready said, Star Trek Online hasn't even shipped yet, and EVE has been around forever.

It's like comparing the girlfriend you *might* have to your first one.

You cant compare these, Its not fair, one is purely space combat while STO will be Ground combat aswel. However i found it difficult to get into EVE. So im hoping STO wont be too complicated. lol

In EVE you cant even manually fly the ship. And making money is pure grind whether it's mining or ratting. No thanks, give me a game with missions that are unique every time please. Eve can't do that.

I played Eve for years and I also played STO at PAX so I think I'm qualified to answer this question...

I'd take STO over Eve any day. The only thing I liked about Eve was how visually attractive the game is. STO combat is also a lot more "hands on" feeling instead of the traditional "activate attack" RPG mechanic.

Who can tell? With any luck, they'll both be good games and we'll have "choice", something sorely missing in the space genre today.

Meanwhile, I'll keep playing EVE.

I currently have 2 subs to Eve, but I've grown kind of bored with it. I've gone through similar 'blah' phases in the past 2 years of playing, but I have a feeling this one might stick. I've always wanted to play a Star Trek MMO, and I think that's one reason I've played Eve for so long (that, and the people in my corporation are a good group of guys). Eve is a great game, and I hope it continues to prosper.

That said, I'm more excited about STO than I have been about any game in a long time. I kept some tabs on it when Perpetual had the IP, but felt it was going vaporware. Then, recently, I learned that Cryptic had gotten the rights to the game and checked out the site again. I'm happy with the information we have so far (which, to be honest, isn't a whole lot), and I feel that STO will probably suit me better than Eve.

I still have subs for my 2 characters until May, though, so, if STO does disappoint, I still have New Eden. Even if STO is as awesome as I think it will be, I may just sell one of them to buy GTCs to keep the other sub active. The hardest part will be to decide who I sell and who I keep.

I'm curious, based on what you saw at PAX, what looks good and what could use improvement ?

Don't feed the retards.

I played Eve for several months.... And although the graphics were great, the main things I didn't like about it, were:

1. I couldn't directly control my ship.  Which means that for very large chunks of time, I was just sitting here staring at the screen while I flew through star system after star system, rather than actually playing.

2. There was nothing I could do to train my skills any faster or slower, other than just make sure I clicked to start training another skill each time I finished one.  So again, I didn't actually do any PLAYING to accomplish any of my skills.

3. All of the skill training eventually started to look like it was just going to stretch on into eternity. Which made me feel that no matter how diligently I clicked to keep my character training, I would simply never catch up to other players.

4. All of the major game systems like construction, trading, researching, ect, were so incredibly complicated that in order to really get much out of them, you were required to build and keep your own notes and spreadsheets and mini-databases.  I don't call that game depth, I call it over complication..

Basically all of that stuff added up to the most incredibly boring, sleep-inducing MMO game I've ever played.

So yeah... Bring on STO.  At the very least, I don't think they could be any worse than eve.

This game will have to be pretty bad not to be better than Eve.  I like some aspects of Eve, but it is the most boring game I have ever had the misfortune of subscribing to.  Gameplay is just a big snoozefest.  I have heard a lot of people say you don't play Eve, you watch it.  I think that pretty much sums it up.  For a more in-depth and totally accurate review, follow the link in my sig. ;)

The ground combat needed work, but from what I've read from the devs they're working on ground AI right now. I couldn't really think of a way to improve space combat other than maybe letting us do rolls and loops.
