@Kaocan. The title of this post was "Aion is the number one MMO of 2009". I am posting WITH references the attitude with which NCsoft and surroundings announce launches and info. In rereading my posts on the subject of THIS thread, I made very clear I stayed on topic in every INCH of my posts. and ... ON TOPIC. Read the OP. |

It is pretty interesting to follow the amount of pre-orders and pre-purchases games tend to get these days. It might be just me, but I'd wager that buying games from various Internet services that allow you to download games directly to your computer are becoming more commonplace by the year and as such comparing previous releases to current ones seems rather simplistic. As a result of direct downloading the box sales for games are likely to dwindle whereas the number of pre-orders is probably a tad higher than in the past. As such, the release of Aion is most interesting thing for the MMO community (together with CO, of course) for they will work as a benchmark for a "Steam-driven" launch. In comparison, e.g. AoC was available from Steam first more than three months after release and the same holds true for WAR -- the big releases of last year.
I would guess that for Aion (and CO) this will mean that a greater number of certain buyers are already in that number of pre-orders while in the past there was a significant proportion of gamers who queued to game shops to get their game first. Now, if you want to be first with Aion you don't march to game shop but instead order the game from the Internet. Therefore it will be interesting to see what kind of first-day / first-month sales the game gets when launched in the old fashioned way. |

I know that the game has launched on other continents but as far as it goes it's still in beta for most of the rest of us. How can a beta be the number one MMO? Numbers don't make it number one. Numbers only mean that people are attracted by it's flashyness and have been suckered into buying it. It's not a bad game but I certainly wouldn't call it number one. It's nothing really new, it's not innovative, it's basically yet another WoW-clone except with much better graphics and an even worse community revolving around it... For the Templars... |

Warhammer online is the number 1 selling MMO in the first month and we all know how that turned out. Sales numbers mean absolutly nothing when it comes to the game being good or not. Seen a million MMOs and I rocked them all. |

Of course I did and the above is a cut of my original remark: Here was the rest. "The title of this post was "Aion is the number one MMO of 2009". ..... Read the OP." So the OP's title is clearly incorrect. As a side note @---> Cyberwiz from Antwerp. Already found the OFFICIAL link to those 3.5 M subscriptions of Aion, you post in your graphs...because you sure do still ANNOUNCE them on you telenet providor charts. I think after 4 months now, you should really stick to the official annoucements or otherwise ... NO koffiekoek for you then.

Actually, I'll add that I'm quite surprised with how high the pre-order number has gone. With the failures we've seen recently (even with CO's little fiasco) I imagined players would be more careful. Even with those warnings against pre-orders, the numbers are still high. Very high, in fact, given what we've seen lately.
Edit to address your last post without another reply, Zorn. What other game in 2009 has achieved higher pre-order sales? Name one, with reference, before you call the OP's thread title incorrect. It's not named "Aion is the most played game of 2009". Its title is based on its contents, which you've conveniently ignored like everything else. "The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it."

Originally posted by Wizardry Wizardry, you are a strange, strange individual. The fact of the matter is, games that sell a lot of copies means that a lot of people are interested in playing that game. If it retains those people after the game goes live, then those people must be having fun with the game. If A LOT of people are having fun with a game, then of course people will want to show off it's accomplishments, like pre-order and sub counts. It doesn't make them insecure, it makes them excited. It's the same reason music artist frame their gold and platinum records. Its the same reason why athletic teams retire the numbers of celebrated athletes. Its even the same reason why parents put their kid's drawings on the fridge. They are proud and excited for the accomplishments.

/shrug Screw the trolls, 400,000 is a good pre-order number for a MMORPG, especially one not trading off an established IP. Anyone who can't admit that is either a moron or has an agenda. Pre selection today :D |

Zorndorf is just asking for a link to the official announcement of the 3.5M subs NCSoft was claiming. Haven't really seen him bash Aion. Is it really that hard to find an official link or were NCSoft blowing their own horn like they did with L2? |
