Most "questers" don't bother reading the quests and couldn't care less about the lore or storyline. For them, quests are nothing more than XP cheat codes because they are too lazy to grind.

I think NCSoft should implement a multiple choice quiz at the end of every quest in order for players to get quest rewards. It would also be good if quest text was non-skippable in order to force players to use quests as they are intended by the developers.

people play games for different reason's, if you like to read the quest logs then do it, some people just wanna get stronger and dont really care about the story about the man they are helping.

forcing people is never a good idea...

ofcause this is just my opion just like like your post is your opion.

wow-style quests (like those in Aion) are not for telling lore, they're for hiding the grind. Instead of grinding 50 of the same enemy, the quest tells you to kill 10 of enemy A and 10 of enemy B, for the next quest you need 20 of enemy C and for the third quest you've to collect some items (from 10 enemies of category D). At all you also killed 50 enemies, but the quest system hided it. Thats it =)

Everyone not playing wow is a wow hater! :P

lol this is nothing new. I remember being able to skip quest lore in EQ1 in 2000 in its what would now be considered very piss poor UI and quest system with online walkthroughs.

Plus if you use the analogy of 'cheat codes' all a quiz would do is make it a slightly harder cheat code, which all the multiple choice answers would be on yes, a online walkthrough of quests. Unfortunately your premise that quests are like cheat codes is faulty therefore any conclusions you draw from that premise are also faulty.

So because you like grinding, you want to troll people who like questing. And you can't speak for everyone who likes questing, you don't even know them. Plenty of people read the quests and enjoy the lore.

All I can say is TG.

Not like free to play games where they give you 2 quests and that equals maybe 5% xp if you are lucky and then the rest is grind grind grind (f*cking) grind with no point and if the game has a XP DP and you die by accident then your whole morning is gone. Even if the quests don't give lots of xp at least they give you something to do and let you explore the world a little bit if done right (even if you learn nothing of the lore) and you can stack your quests incase there is a XP DP.

I VOTE FOR QUESTS VIVA!

. For them, quests are nothing more than XP cheat codes because they are too lazy to grind.

I

Isn't Grind mind-numbing repetitive click-and-kill for XP without thinking? I would guess Quest-Grinding and Monster-Grinding or the same animal basically.

Quests don't all have to be "Kill 10 of these" or "Go fetch this from X npc".

They can make Quests where you have to think a little about how you will do something. "Get him to 50X health and use the wand on him" and even bury things in the quest text that are hints that would save you a lot of time. "You can kill 300 Orcs ...OR you can go talk to the witch, she may know an easier way.." and then put the "kill 300 works" in the hint text that shows on screen.

I don't think a Mandatory Quiz "What were you supposed to do on the last quest?" is worth while, but I could see how depending on how you answer an npc's question, you get a different reward.

"Did you enjoy your mission, (PCNAME)?"

A) YES!

B) No, it was a grim task but it needed to be done.

C) No, I hate quests

Then depending on the nature of the task at hand, the NPC quest reward giver would reward you appropriately. That sort of thing adds flavor and I am all about that. I don't quest grind and I don't grind monsters, but I wouldn't punish either kind of player if thats their enjoyment level.

Unfortunately you cannot force people to enjoy the content.  The people that don't read the quests loose out on some of the entertainment value.  They don't gain anything by not reading the quests, so there's no sense in trying to take more from them.

Some of the text is "non-skippable" already.  You have to scroll to the bottom of the box in order to hit "accept".  This doesn't mean they have to read it, but there's no way someone would play a game with a comprehensive exam at the end of every event.  It's all about enjoying the aspect each of us likes most from the game.  For some that's the quests and the lore, for others: the pvp only.

The people that like both get a double bonus and receive more value from the game that the 'one-siders'.  The people that read the quests and experience Aion to its fullest are getting more for their money.  I don't care if someone else wants to buy a copy and throw half of it away; neither should you.

And I think getting XP from killing is cheat codes, because people are too lazy to wait and get the experience like in EvE-Online.

I don't really think like this, but after reading your brainfart I felt compelled to answer.

Too lazy????

You must be kidding!

"click" and wait for the skill to learn is THE MOST LAZY way to "lvl/skill up" out of any method so far...hell even people who macro put more effort into it than that!

Its better to be quiet and perceived as stupid, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

9/17/09 10:36:03 AM#12

Oh, for pity's sake, go and enjoy your mindless grind then. Quests at least give you an illusion that what you're doing matters somehow, at least to your character if not to the ever static world around you. I mean, seriously, what can I say?

Nature without Technology is little more than animals running about.
Nature without Magic is without wonder or miracle.
.........
Magic without Technology is fantasy.
Magic without Nature is formless and useless.
.........
Technology without Nature is application without understanding.
Technology without Magic is repetitious and uninventive.

^^ this If you want play pvp game with no story line, play Fury lol. Though its true what some people say about some people play it for different reasons, I still think lore is a big part with fantasy mmos

playing:Aion, shot online.
waiting for: Terra
Used to play:wow,EQ,EQ2,Rf Online, lineage II,Raganoke online.

This is the same mentality that has ruined most MMOs.  Developing a game within certain perameters IS a good idea and the reason it's a good idea is because then other people can't tread on the enjoyment of others in their gaming experience.  Running around aimlessly and powerleveling as fast as you can to end game is amateur and it screws it up for everyone else because the curve in which the developers expected people to reach end game content is thrown off.

Oh yeah I can feel the flames already because that's all most people know how to do anymore and then they get defensive because they consider that some sort of "play style"...riiiiiight.  Getting enough experience to fill bars to reach end game level doesn't take skill and whoever decided to call those people "Hard core" gamers is an idiot IMO.

Now personally I don't give a damn if you want to follow a story line or just completely ignore the work that the developers put into the game (because they really put quests in there just because they had nothing better to do with there time).  But the OP is simply making the point that today most people don't read quest information or follow story lines anymore.

Maybe what they should do is nerf the XP rewards for quests by 75% or remove the XP reward altogether, leaving the quests in their most pure form.  Just a small kinah reward and maybe an item or title reward.

Gross. I think I along with thousands of other people would just cancel right there. lol.... I think what they (and developers of every other MMO out there need to do) is write quests and design quests that are  really really interesting. That's the only thing that really stops me from reading alot of quests, especially if I've read them before.

There are quests like that but there are a lot of quests that focus on lore and storylines not related to grind in AION... just like in Everquest 2.

Well it would force everyone to grind experience rather than get a fairly "free ride" that is for certain but the problem with that is then you would have to put in other mechanics to keep the game from seeming like another Korean grind fest.

That would change absolutely nothing.  Plenty of the quests are interesting but the issue is that everyone likes something different when it comes to what people think is a good story line, just like people enjoy different genres of the books they read or movies they watch.  You could design the best fantasy story line ever made and some non-fiction person could look at it and be like...that was stupid.

But the real issue isn't that the quests are uninteresting, it's that people simply don't care about them and are after the experience.

Had to fix that for you.  I think there's a sizable group that enjoys reading the quests, I know I do at least the first alt through, and if they aren't the typical "fetch 5 frog leg" quests.

Questing allows a player to gain experience doing activities other than killing npc monsters.  Nothing wrong if folks want to do shuttle, escort, crafting etc quests in addition to constantly killing stuff, have to grind somehow.

When I help people in RL, it's not out of the kindness of my heart, it's so they'll stop bugging me... I don't give a crap about their heartache story... why should I care about the NPCs issues, just gimme the money and XP and stfu... if they weren't so damn lazy or inept they'd do it themselves wouldn't they. Plus, I'm a hero... their problems are inconsequential...

I have no problems with this.  Nor do I have any problem with the use of macros or bots.

Ultima Online was one of the greatest PvP MMORPGs ever and it uses this type of system.

Girlfriends come and go but Epic battles are Soulbound

9/17/09 11:47:25 AM#25

Meh call me crazy but I like to do both.  I do read quest because some can be quite funny and then there are others that have a good story.  But you are right in that aion has it share of canned quest but I read them anyway and try to do them all because I can't stand to open my quest log and see old quest in it that I have not finished.

Most people that tend to not read quest are the one's that are in a race to max lvl, and feel they can't spare the time or effort to read.

Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
