In terms of sheer numbers, WoW isn't the largest MMO ever.  I believe than Lineage 1 still holds that title at just over 35 million worldwide, although 34.75 mill was in asia.  NC always has been and always will be a Korean Co.  NC Austin merely does what NC Korea wants them to.

yeah, Lineage 1 has 1 million subs world wide, with about 10k-20k in NA/EU

still great for a game that was released in 1998

It would be nice to see another successful game hit the market.  I don't care if it the new biggest game on the market or not as long as it isn't shedding hundreds of thousands of players and closing half of its servers 6 months after release.

I guess that means they are far away from the 3.5 million subs claimed, but Ncsoft have done a great job making people believe its that succesfull.

Its strange that MMOdata uses thoose numbers but have a link to that article among its sources...

Exactly. The 3.5 million number is false and I have done the math. It is closer to 1.5 million and I firmly believe it was a typo that the Internet ran with and now everyone believes.

Want proof?

That article right there. WIth Aion releasing in the West, if it had 3.5 million subs, it would be a major marketing tool and we would see the numbers everywhere with official press releases and the like.

NC Soft would claim that number in a heartbeat if it was accurate. But why release lower official numbers when the Internet buzz number is higher. :)

Also, it will be better to see how Aion fare after a few months, after its launch in N.A and Euro, to see whether the subs will continue to rise or not.

And 11.5mil of WoW, compare to 3.5mil, i think Aion will need quite some time if it does indeed catch up.

Do you honestly think WoW has 11.5 million after 6 or so millions of those subs where "completely" unable to play for over 2 months?

Yes, because servers is back online...

its not 11.5 million subs for wow, its probably 11.5 million accounts, that includes me who hasnt played for 2 years. theres not 11.5 million paying customers.

I'll never understand why you people care so much about numbers of accounts or people playing certain games...

I think they should let a panel of people count both WoW's and Aion's sub numbers so this way we don't have typos on the internet and we can actually for once find out the real numbers. Though honestly, I could care less how many subs WoW or Aion has.

Because they all flock to the game that has the most subs.

3.5 M is nothing and also you can't count people in China since they don't pay by the month, they pay by the hours.  They could just pay once then stop playing.  I know that because I was playing on Chinese server.

I plan to play NA version, so I think that I have a pretty fair view of the game, I am neither troll nor fanboi.  There are something I hate about Aion and there are some I love about it.  No game is perfect.  I would give Aion a 7/10, so it's an OK game to me.

TBH a lot of peopel are stil ltrying to find a game that will be the "legendary wow killer" Sorry to say this but Aion just ain't one of them. The only "WoW killer" that i think has a chance even is Blizzard's new IP MMO that they are developing.

This is bound to happen to virtually every game now (save for some of the Asian games).  The genre has grown to the point where there are always a few hundred thousand people willing to switch to the next big release to see if it will capture them.  It won't, they move on, doom and gloom is then posted all over the internet about the game sucks and will be dead in 6 months.

Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.

Now, tell me. how many ppl you know, who plays WOW without any of its expantions? huh? couse acording your numbers. there must be. 6 mln players who are playing wotlk, and about 5,5 mln who still plays original WOW.

And here comes the truth.

basically there are playing only about 5-6 mln player in WOW right know. couse we dont see a lot of souls playing Original WOW in Azeroth right now, don't we?

I'm not saying that Aion will follow such example, but the numbers of subs before it's fully released world wide isn't a good representation of the amount of players who will stay interested and continually sub to Aion.

Listen.. WAR and AoC smelled like a failure from miles away, I didn't even touch those two games. And I'm playing Aion, and I have preordered it. So there you have it. These numbers mean something because there is a DECENT game behind them.

Wotlk sold 4million copies in the first month of release (only avaliable outside of china) Wotlk has been in the top 3 sales spots since release 11 months ago.  That's all people who dispute the numbers need to know.

Relax Coffee. Nobody truly thinks Aion will kill WOW, its just wishful thinking. Everyone has seen the numbers. Even those of us that do not believe the numbers know that WOW has the most subs.
