Thinking about giving this game a try.  Sick of WoW and nothing else is grabbing me.  Want to feed my mmo habit.  Just wondering how the community is in this game.

Don't play this game its dying. It sounds like its free at first but thats only if you want to get absolutely destroyed endgame by everyone else. You will end up spending more money on this game than the normal 15/month. If the fact that its pretty much dead already and that its not really free dont deter you then you may just be stupid enough to play it. =)

Ignore the generalisations and insulting language in this post. The game is far from dying - I mean, where do you get this shit from? Have you even been in game? I've been playing it for two or three weeks now and its buzzing with activity.

It is true to say, however, that you do have to watch the cash shop on this one. It's fairly cleverly done and it will suck lots of cash from you if you let it. Be warned...

Of course someone who has a lot of time and/or money invested in the game will claim its not dead. I've been playing for 4 months and if you asked me 2 months ago i would say there are many players. However now there is only a tiny fraction of the players left. Plus this game is 100% gear based (like WoW) so the people who spend more money are always better and it makes a huge difference in this game. People get mad though after spending a lot of money only to realize that this game is quite terrible on top of having such a bad population. If you do play, don't spend any money and just kill mobs all day because thats pretty much all there is to do..no endgame really except dungeons that can be duo'ed etc (by people that spend enough money). This game is terrible and if you decide to play it you will find out the hard way =)

There's some validity to some of the points you make - money does make a huge difference and those that spend it will always be better than those who don't, but it's a cash shop game, you know, there wouldn't be much point in an item mall if that were not the case. Players need to go in with their eyes open.

I think you're over-stating it quite a bit though, when you claim that the game is dying. it's not. I think it's pretty far from that tbh. There's plenty of life and activity ever where that I've seen in the game and you can get a group for any quest  in a minute or two, how many other games can say that.

I can't comment on th endgame or anything (I have a knight 25/warrior 25) but you may well be right there.

I'm just saying, the game has a wee bit more going for it than your posts suggest and people who fancy it should try it. Just be prepared to spend a little bit of cash,,,

Aye, like i said I am labeling this server as dying only due to the huge population change i have seen in the past 4 months. The amount of players now is nothiing compared to what it used to be. I think this is partly because once people get to endgame they realize how little there is to do and quit or reroll, perhaps on a different server. =)

The game is far from dying... just ignore the Chicken Little QQ'er.  I would advise staying away from the PvP server though as that seems to be where all the children landed and the nerd rage is legendary.  The PvP servers weren't implemented well and since cash = king, whoever spends the most dominates it.  Fortunately, it's a small minority of the player base.

The community is hit or miss.  Sometimes it's the best around, and other times it's the 2nd coming of WoW's Barrens (if you know what I mean).  The game is free to download and play though, so you've got nothing to lose by trying it.

MMO games would be pretty cool if it weren't for the people.

I dont think this game is diying, i myself started not long ago and is  pretty alive.i play on a spanish PVE server and i always find people to party with ^^.

The community is  somewhat inmature in the starting areas, but after you reach higer lv you dont have to deal with them anymore, most of them dont get past lv 10/subclass stage.

Just watch out for the WoW fanboys that pops often and start the wowclone-wowclone speach.(dont care if it is or not , but they are anoying as hell /blacklist), apart from that everyone is pretty helpfull , even outside of the guilds.

Then again i play on a spanish server could be diferent on the english ones,

I have been playing on the Reni server for the past 3 months. Like most MMOS pay or not the starting area are full of zone chat spam that is annoying. Once you get to the higher levels there is not problem with the gold spam or immature players. Our population only seems to be growing on Reni.

While cash is king in any F2P I have to say that most of the population (at least on my  pve server) does not go crazy and spend hundreads of dollars on uber gear.  PvP seems balanced for a P2P and is based on skill more then class. I have won quite a few duels against higher level players with superior gear.

The dual class system is quite fun and adds a lot of depth to the game. The ability to upgrade equipment 4 different ways adds item customization to suit each playstyle for every class.

It cant hurt to give it a try. Just dont go crazy with the cash shop and you will be alright. Server will be down until 3am pst tomorrow (6am est) for the opening of the new chapter.

I find the community quite helpful and MUCH better then most P2P games (WoW, War, Aion).

TWILIGHT ONION!

From my experience back when the game was in closed, and then open beta there are tons of things this game does right but also a lot the game does wrong.

Back then it would cost you a ton of money to upgrade gear. I remember multiple people doing heavy caluclations very detailed about how much money they spent on the end game gear. The one that stands out the most would have to be the person who spent 280 dollars to obtain great end game gear.

The money you need to spend is kinda insane in my book. I don't know if things changed now, or if the ability to buy cash shop money in game changed anything. I would say the game is good for a free 2 play game, the same way you can say "The Conduit" is good "For a Wii game" Measured by any current gen system game standards like GoW, GTA4, or Deadspace The conduit is a pile of crap, but if you compare it with last gen games, and wii games its quite good. The same goes with Runes of magic, for the F2P market its ok.

Expect to pay some money if you want to get the high end game things done. If you plan to become a major player in PVP as well expect to pay a ton. Unless that is you happen to be one of those people who has no job, does not go to college, and sits at home all day playing games. If you happen to be in this situation then by all means please play RoM because your 24/hr a day free schedule will be more than enough to compete in RoM playing for free.

It all depends on how  "leet" you whant to be really, from PvE perspective i dont find the item shop that usefull personally , and im having a blast for free, never had a problem when  i was not able to perform on somethin couse my gear was gymped.take note i play tank job, the most gear dependant job in the game as well.

Now if you must have maxed gear and such , w-o earning it in game well , everyone their game, im a ffxi ex player and damn i had aegis, maats cap a kraken club and bunch other rare items , so when i compare what i had to do there to get that , to what is needed in rom to get stuf  without expending real money , i dont find it so hard.Even if i dont play as much as i used to.

Now if the underage kids whants to be leet in 1month of game play then by all means  go away , theres nothin to be seen here XD

As for PvP , well i find PvP meaningless on a MMORPG so i cant speak for that.

As I say, the cash shop on this one can be a big drain. Like most of these guys say, you don't have to use it if you really don't want to, but at the end of the day, it's the reason this game is here, it's the vehicle by which the developers make their money and they need to make it attractive. Spending money to uber up your gear, get mounts and so on can become addictive for some people, so be warned.

To avoid the cash shop, I think you're going to have to grind like crazy to get half-way decent stuff and while this is a reasonable wee game, it's not worth that kind of investment in time and patience.

The further I go, to be honest, the more I begin to dislike this whole cash shop model. I think when it comes down to it, it's better to pay by the month and be done with it. At least then, you know what you're getting and where you are...

The comminty is the only complaint I have with this game. I have never been able to get a group, and even basic things like asking for locations of something go unanswered. It could be the server I am on. not sure.

I've been playing for 2 weeks on Reni PvE and haven't had any problems getting groups for dungeon/boss raids.  People don't seem to group however for simple grinding or the easier quests.  Maybe it's not necessary, but it could be because so many people have priest as their second class.  The server, in the lower levels at least, also seems packed during USA prime time.

Community so far has been good to great.  I've met alot of friendly and helpful people, and of course some idiots (cue blacklist).

The item shop, beyond buying a permanent mount, doesn't seem relevant to PvE so far.  Since PvP in an MMO is so dependent on gear and stats, I'm sure it will give a huge advantage.  I play FPS however for PvP, so this is not a problem for me.

All that said, for a F2P game, the depth and quality of Runes of Magic is very impressive.  It is definately a full featured game; and -- most of all -- very fun.

The game is fun and free until lvl 35/35 alot of good content and stuff to do. Havent played in a moths because it becomes unplayable grindy or real money expensive after that with little content. Unless they raised the level cap since I left, it was level 50 i think.

You must have quit playing soon after release maybe?  They've added tons of quests making it very easy to level past 35.  They've also added new zones and dungeons.  The cap is 55 now as well.

MMO games would be pretty cool if it weren't for the people.

Gracefield's view is spot on.

.....................

To play this game along side your peers then you do need to invest some money , even then you will have to play alot to make enough ingame gold to upgrade your items to the next level.

Rom in my opinion is a fun game and you could do alot worst playing the hyped p2p monthly mmos.

As for me this was my first and will be my last f2p cash shop game.

First, PvP is not balanced whatsoever, so definitely roll PvE.

The game is a huge cash drain at 50+.  It takes cash to be able to grind in the 52-55 area, then you need to replace and cash-shop modify a 55 set to do the last 4-5 instances in the game.  As for community, I played PvP for a long while before switching to a PvE server (Osha).  The world chat channel is filled with people talking about the "guild war" pvp scenarios they do and trying to see whose epeen measures up.  I can't say I have much love for the GM's either.  They mostly post on the forums to say "everything is fine/pending" or stating rules/locking threads.  Often you will see valid threads get locked for no reason because the author is someone that got on the GM's bad side recently.
