This is just one person's opinion (I am tired of absolutist posts - like do not play x because it did not start once on my computer).  Anyway, I watched the big PAX demo and it looked okay.  I watched the Bounty Hunter combat and I thought this is okay.  I am sure some people will like the flame thrower and later jump pack ability, but overall meh for me.  The smuggler seemed very weak overall in comparison (it might have just been what they showed...they really had some weak humor and a pretty lame presento in many parts in my opinion, Darth Darth Binks and lame jokes about swimsuit clad Hutt slaves).

Then I saw the sith warrior and a snippet of the jedi.  As I expected, the combat was really, really good in my opinion for these two.  So, I went from doubting that I would try this game to most likely giving it a go.  I know it is early, but I would really be surprised if they can somehow crack the code on making all the classes as fun and interesting to play as the jedi and sith warrior.

Sure, in the movie when I was a kid I wanted to be Han Solo and not Luke, but come on Harrison Ford's acting vice Mark Hammil...no contest.  Han Solo was very cool and clever, the smuggler as it stands now just is not going to bring that feeling and I do foresee a ton of jedi and sith warriors wih a sprinkling of the other classes.  This is making a big assumption that most people think like me, which is obviously not a great starting point and the whole reason why I am posting.

I know there are other threads about this, but what do you all think in your own personal opinions based on the PAX demo and what you have seen.  Will the light saber carriers eclipse all?  Or can Bioware really capture the "cool factor" of the Bounty Hunter Fetts and Han Solo and make those clases stand truly equal in fun factor and appeal to the mighty jedi and sith?

Hehe, I felt the opposite. For some reason the Ranged combat (I almost always play melee in MMOs) looked far more appealing to me. Trooper surprised me, seems like he is going to be a beast when it comes to damage. Smuggler didn't seem to have crazy damage potential, but he seemed to be the hard core survivor of them all. Cover, knockdowns, and the nutt kick + headshot did a ton of damage, probably will strike fear in people trying to get close to them. Bounty Hunter seemed to supply some great AoE CC, Single Target CC. And some decent damage. Sith/Jedi seem to be single target, hack and slash. They have some defense mechanics, but seem to be interuptable (bounty hunter flame thrower as an example). Force choke seems cool, but I'm not sure if anybody notice. When the target is being choked seems like they take less damage.

As far as capturing the "cool factor" of roles from the movies. In my opinion they seem to be doing that. When  they showed the Trooper demonstration, you could hear people in the crowd cheering it on, they was loving every second. I'm pretty certain there will be a lot of jedi/sith. Really I could care less. As long as my chosen class (Bounty Hunter) provides me a great experience thats all that matters. And to those people that do choose jedi/sith. More power to you, enjoy the class. Because enjoyment is what games are about.

Edit: Just wanted to add something. Currently we only have two known melee classes, Jedi and Sith. If it remains this way I could see a lot of people playing these. Just for the reason of not having much of a melee option. My hopes is they add some other melee type class in the near future. And not because I'm worried about to many Sith/Jedi (which in my opinion shouldn't matter we all choose classes that appeal to us, so I see no reason in making a deal out of it), just because I would love to see something that can specialize in vibro blades or hand to hand.

Great reply!  Just what I was looking for to balance my jaded mind.  Good luck with your Bounty Hunter

After seeing the jedi and sith in combat im convinced that these two classes will dominate the scene. I myself always liked the two "unsung" heroes Han Solo and Boba Fett. Imo the two coolest characters of the first trilogy. Han Solo with his last minute solutions when cornered. Boba Fett with his ice cold cool, superior skills and arsenal of weapons beeing able to bring in his bounty(I just read the books bounty hunter wars, its highly recommended).

If there is a snowballs chance in hell that this game will be roleplaying friendly. I will certainly take on the role of bounty hunter.

The PAX videos threw me into confusion. :) The ranged classes grabbed me far more than the sith or jedi classes, which is not at all what I thought would happen. I think the bounty hunter class will be particularly fun... a bit like batman with all his toys. However, I instinctively do not want to play an evil class so I'm not sure I will like it.

I typically fail to stick with alts. At least that is what has happened with the few fantasy MMOs I have played (LOTRO and WoW and Vanguard). But the reason for this is I am highly adverse to repetition of content. And in these mmos even the content experienced for the first time has a high amount of repetition - kill 10 of these, or collect 12 of those, or go there and come back and then go there again. There are very few times I have been challenged by the combat in normal solo questing and so after killing 3 Quebian Trolls... killing 7 more of them is a "sigh" moment which I do to get the reward (of course). The thought of killing another 10 Quebian Trolls on an alt, even with a different set of skills, or (worse) doing the same fetch/deliver quests again, is enough to make me give up on alts. You can do what you can to avoid the same quests/zones, but it is difficult.

And now comes SW:TOR claiming a very different experience for each class, because it is a story driven MMO in which each class has its own story. This may be the game which I will finally enjoy experiencing different classes beyond the first zones or so. Note I said may. It is very hard to actually pull this off to an extent which I think will work for me.

So for I would like to try the Jedi (I doubt this one will last long), Bounty Hunter (maybe there will be loads of god awful Jedi kiddies running around that will mean I'm quite happy to be on the other side lol), Smuggler and Trooper. That's three/four out of the five announced classes right? If I get caught up in the class/story each time, then that will already make this game an amazing winner for me.

Once I saw the Trooper in action, it reminded me of the Engineer from WAR (minus the Turrets). Fast moving ranged combatant with bombs and such that fires massive, concentrated salvos of ammunition. The Trooper just passed the Jedi on my interest list.

Well let me be the first in this thread to say that I want to be a Smuggler more than the other classes.  And, believe it or not, it has nothing to do with being a Han Solo fan.  It has to do with the fact that they seem like a very unique class due to the cover mechanic.

In all honesty, the Sith appealed to me the least.  Don't get me wrong, the force choke and the lightning looked really cool but for the mostpart they seemed like a standard melee class and I've never been the biggest melee fan in the 8 mainstream MMOs I have played since EQ1.

If somebody enjoys melee classes then I'm sure Jedi and Sith will be amazing classes to play but I don't think they were so much better than Trooper/Bounty Hunter/Smuggler to make someone who is not normally into melee decide to use them.

For the record, I get the impression that the Smuggler will be like a Rogue-type class (I don't mean WoW in particular) in that they will be very weak defensively but have ways to protect themselves (cover, groin kick) and be able to do an occasional "major damage" attack like head shot (similar to backstab in other games?).

I feel Trooper will do higher ranged damage on a regular basis and have slightly better defense than the Smuggler but not have the methods to maintain safety (such as cover, groin kick) or have an attack as powerful as head shot.

I think Bounty Hunter will be similar to Trooper but have a bit more "utility / crowd control" and a bit less pure damage.

Of course this is all speculation but in short, all of the classes seem really cool to me!

And we still have three more classes coming!

Although I'm waiting until alll classes are revealed... so far from what I've seen the smuggler was my favorite and more toward the kind of playstyle I like...   very calculated on where you bunker down.... I think it can really turn the tide of a battle between a number of other classes if a smuggler can find a good spot to hunker down so the bounty hunters can't target from above and the other classes don't have a clear shot or can't attack from behind...  He seemed like the kind of character that can dish out damage, but also the kind of guy you'd want if you were backed into a corner.

Another big thing that interests me... when you look across the classes.. you see the jedi and the sith.. and you can take a few guesses on what their light side/ dark side abilities will be.  But what kind of light side/dark side abilities will smugglers and bounty hunters and the other classes have?  Just on that alone makes me more interested in seeing what the other classes can bring to the table.

Yup, this is going to be very interesting. And it's not just dark/light, think he said something about gray as well.

Oh no, I hear ya, I'm totally a shade of grey.. and thats how I'd play any class that would give me the chance.  Then again, you never know what kind of great abilities you can get for the different alignments......  Its a very interesting way to differentiate builds in each class... and since this is somewhat gear based... I think it will be interesting to see if different weapons will change up skills as well.. I know they mentioned something about dual sabers and things like that having different effects.... so I wonder if a smuggler that uses a carbine would be different then one that uses a single handed blaster.....

have they said if there would be any smuggling? Im sure the class quest will, but like to travel to an area of an enemy faction would require a smuggler? Kind of dependant on another player so Im not sure if something like that would fit. Or buy faction items to sell to another faction. I know LA loves spice, so I assume that won't be anywhere. Something other than just class quest i guess Im asking.

I wonder if there will be more melee classes. And if, what they will look like. It would be cool if one of the classes would be mechanical ... a melee combat robot.

When looking at the movies, it is all about pewpew, the only 2 melee classes are sith/jedi.

I'll probably try all classes before i decide :)

From the beginning I have wanted to be a Sith, every table top game of star wars I have been a sith, (or at least a darksider if the time line wasnt appropriate.)

While Im still on the fence about the game due to mostly lack of knowledge of the other classes (really that could make it or break it for me as well as other potentials.) So far it looks decent, obviously it looks rough on the animation compared to WoW but considering that its still in its developement stages its not to shabby.

Bounty Hunter has never really appealed to me, lack of reading the the extended lore probably has a part in it considering how laughable Bobba fett was taken out in "Jedi" really never made me feel like I wanted to play that. The animation of the Bounty hunter and the use of the jet pack kinda is swaying me away from that class since it really seems like its gonna be a combat move only.

Smuggler has a cool idea with cover, hopefully they will really flush out this concept and just give you areas that are cover areas rather than showing you the direct places you will crouch.  The dialogue seems the only reason to play this class, because apparently I can't be a wise cracking Sith Warrior that pokes fun at the Jedi while im killing him.

Trooper looks ok, not a lot of interest really, but could be a fun class as far as gameplay and style. Its a little hard to get a grasp on the trooper as it seems the most basic class with no real Iconic character to base it off of other than the clone wars episodes.

Probably gonna end up with Sith Spy or something as the other class, could be interesting if they do more than just make it a copied version of the Smuggler with a system unlike Cover.

I will probably go grey Jedi mainly for roleplay reasons (and I do like swinging a lightsaber around) but I do also like the look of all the other classes. Fortunatly it also looks like the game will support the creation of alts with the story and quests.

In response to this I believe that droids are not playable in this game.  The closest thing would probably a fully armored mandalorian/bounty hunter/trooper.  I think they'll have at least 1 more melee class, or something at least with more melee moves... but its still too early to tell.

I expect that there will be a considerably larger number of Jedi/Sith in the beginning after this game is released, but I believe this will balance out over time. Because every class has its own unique storyline and feel, I think people will end up playing multiple classes.

The Jedi and the Sith will probably be the most crowded classes to begin with, but this should even out over time. I will probably play one these classes to begin with myself, but I have every intention of experiencing the other classes as well.
