You, OP, have just described a console. Congratulations, your idea has come to life. Enjoy. Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic |

Thats what THIS TOPIC is about! Your OS would prevent you from eating? Im all for new ideas and such for real and would never call your idea dumb but I do not agree with your idea. |

I did that in WOW, because there was downtime. Earlier MMOs there was more downtime -- as a result I didn't even play those games :P Find a game which cuts out the majority of downtime (Guild Wars was one) and you'll find I was playing the game the entire time.) Even in Champions Online where you get a travel power and travel times are 20-30 seconds to a quest, I'm in my 2nd monitor browsing (usually MMORPG.com :P) It's amusing too, since my main character has Teleport (which requires me to click over and hit T twice every 4-5 seconds.) |

LOL people spent time on forums and trade sites during their games long before wow. Even more humerous, I love your poll. Either we love your idea (which I will admit is not as far fetched as some believe), or we are cheaters. You don't actually expect people to take you seriously do you? |

This thread = win. End all of end all to all threads on this website. God forbid you want to multi-task while you have downtime in a MMO. if I couldn't multitask I'd go crazy while 5 of my friends dicked around trying to get what they need to go into a dungeon, or travel to the dungeon. How about this OP, GTFO. |

I actually have trouble focussing on one thing and often need to multi-task to help my mind from getting bored and/or distracted. (no, i am not ADHD). Along with this I often want to watch the news, or the latest episode of a television show while gaming and then i will usually window the game, mute game sound, and set up split screen. There is also the second issue where in some games there is actually plenty of time to do work while the game is running, during my time playing Eve I would often sit mining with a window while I typed assessments, keeping one eye on screen in case I was needed. Finally: this would mean less people would use OS that had this type of disability, as a result it will not be implemented...

I like the idea of a cut down OS for gaming. It should run faster, and allow those cutting edge games to run more smoothly. The full version of the OS should be compatible the gaming version. Not allowing mods or other software to run could have a lot of unforeseen drawbacks. For example:

Originally posted by mortharx Encryption doesn't solve everything. It can be broken and will be broken. Also, the encryption key is stored somewhere that is accessible to someone with physical access to the machine. You cannot stop someone from getting the OS out of RAM or really from reading it off the hard drive. Once someone has the OS, let the cheating begin as it will be hacked to allow cheating. There are emerging platform capabilities for doing this kind of thing. Woot, vendors creating hacking tools? Oh, I mean corporate spying tools. Never assume secrecy has solved your problem. People will figure out how it works, even without the source or compiled code, and make their own. It only takes one person to break the system and deliver that broken system to all and there will be a million plus people working on the problem. A non-multitasking OS? Well, boot that OS inside a VMM. Now, the game really has no chance of knowing what I'm doing to cheat. The OS loaded as the VM? Well, I have physical access to the machine, let me put a new VM under it. Different hardware would be needed to make this particular one useful. Cheating cannot be stopped. The best bet is to make it cost prohibitive to cheat but this typically ends up costing the normal user money too.

Yeah, I have to agree with others here when I say that you just described an Xbox 360. This works well for a console but would be a terrible idea for any PC game. There are other ways to handle cheating that are much less evasive to the end user. I thought Steam was bad when Half Life 2 came out but this would be just horrible. Worst cheating fix I've ever heard.

Why not, it works well, so why switch? What else should I use, that is apparently more modern and presumably better? |

Nothing. But there are schmucks that use iTunes and Windows Media Player. |

I didn't vote because I don't like this idea, but I don't cheat either.
I fail to see how this will stop anyone from cheating.
Software can be hacked and altered easily.
Your solution would have a workaround within hours of being released guaranteed. Einherjar_LC says: WTB the true successor to UO or Asheron's Call pst! |

Is there something more advanced I should use that makes my music sound better or something? Also I know a good reason to use Winamp over Mediaplayer but probably shouldn't talk to much about it :) |
