None. IP-based MMORPGs (and IP-based games in general, for that matter) suck. The licenses cost a ton of money, and then the people who supplied that ton of money wind up designing it instead of the designers.

Completely agree with this.

There is no way that an mmo could do justice to the worlds of Dune or A Song of Ice and Fire.  You'd end up with, at best, a grindtastic theme park like LotRo, and at worst, a hacked together game that gleefully flaunts it's disregard for the continuity of the source material like SWG.

in addition to developers being demonstrably incapable of adhering to the established lore of a franchise, you'd also have the asshat players to whom the IP means nothing.  You know the ones, bunny-hopping everywhere, PVPing in hot pants and bringing a bunch of real-world chatter into these richly detailed fictional worlds.  Zomg I just one-shotted a level 80 Lannister guard!!!!  Lulz, time to blog about my leetness!!!!

No thanks.

FYI - this cartoon has been out on DVD for some time. I downloaded it months ago off a Torrent site. And.... it was fucking abysmal. I mean... like all kinds of awful. The story was butchered, the animation was terrible, and on top of that they used a weird mix of animation and CGI that completely sucked.

I'd love a Dragonlance game, but I'm not sure if it'd make a good MMO based on all the recent MMO disasters.

I'd LOVE to see a Rifts mmo - done right. You could have a character creator as vast as the CoX / Champions creator, because literally anything is possible in Rifts. Wanna play a vampire? Fine. A gargoyle? Fine. A mech-pilot? Fine. A cyborg? Fine. A dragon? Fine.

You get the point.

LoL, just invent the technology to allow anyone from LoTR to jump into a WoW server, or any other MMO out there and have at it. It would be funny to see Warhammer chars fighting AoC chars etc. I do let my imagination get away.

I would go with Bladerunner, made by Bioware.

Second on the list, Rome Total War (insert other classic empire if you want), where aside from typical class options, should you decide to be a "soldier", you start out on the low rungs and get numbers of troops added to your command as you advance, ala the GW necro class, but these stay with you until they are killed (and you have to use your xp points to replace them, but they also level up and train skills with you). It would make the tank class, also the pet class. For the engine, I would toss in the Unreal 3, with MOesque graphic and physics quality, but of course with 3rdppov. As far as dev company on the gig, I would put CCP.

-----------------------
Tried- L2, Ryzom, WAR, DDO, PWI, Tab Rasa, Requiem, Champs, AA

Played- SWG (pre-cu), AoC, VG, WoW, LoTRO,CoX, EQ2, DAOC, GW, PotBS

Playing- EVE, Jade Dynasty, RoM, Aion, SUN

Waiting for- MO, Tera, APB, TOR, DCO, Jumpgate Evo, Black Prophecy, Dawntide, Cities XL, WH40K, WWE, Alganon, NASA

A pokemon MMO?  That sounds like it might be the lamest idea a MMORPG.com user has ever come up with.  Go play the SOE f2p mmo made for kids if you want something like that.

Pokemon made by Bioware (morale choice in Pokemon <3).

Skulduggary Pleasant (I recommend it as a read, it's pretty light as it's aimed for kids but I loved the world and setting), also made by Bioware but with a real time combat system.

As Warhammer 40k is being made, I really hope it's done well unlike Mythic's game.

Neuromancer would be my top choice. Any good pure cyberpunk MMO would be worth it for me regardless of IP.

Dune could be interesting.

China Miéville's Bas-Lag world is another one that could be very interesting but is probably too dark to be able to get a wide adience.

I wouldn't give any of my daughters up for anything, but I do think some of these could have potential. And I do agree with Shadowrun (can't figure out why it hasn't been done yet), Definitely Mech Warrior if done right, Mad Max might be cool.

Mount and Blade

Dunup mmorpg style.  I know they are working on a online multi player version but thats not a mmorpg.  Things that could make it even more killer would be the ability to build your own castle brick by brick no matter if it took a few months real life time to do. basically take elements from Wurmonline like the ability to terraform the land , farm, player built houses and fortifications and apply Mount and blade game engine art&design combat system and it would be killer.

Full loot PVP, no classes, no combat skills points just crafting and maybe ability stats.  Few if any NPC's and no stupid go kill this many chickens quest.  One last thing you have to have a resource system like wurmonline the tree growth system if you clear cut the place they wont grow back unless you leave a few behind to repopulate the area or hand plant them your self most games you don't care what happens to terrain or resources so when you have to depend on those things to survive and thrive you would kill over it.

Try both games games out and see for your self.  Mount and blade has a free demo its a offline single player game.  Wurmonline has a free tutorial island you can play on unlimited time just your skills are capped to 20.

One is already in the works for me SGW,  Beyond that a well done Dune would be absolutely great!  The sleeper must awaken!  Maybe get Bethesda to do it?  Just don't let SOE anywhere near the game and it'll be OK not necessarily great but stands a better chance.

The words with which I speak are my own.

I'd like to take back my vote for Terry Brooks' Shannara world and instead vote for something controversial and unlikely to ever be done despite how easily established their worlds are.  Anime-based MMOs.

1.  Pokémon, as has been said, would be an awesome idea for an MMO base.  You could play it with your kids, friends or random people and everybody would have fun.  Catching little critters and battling them as you strive to prove yourself against boss Gym Leaders and the like would be quite fun.  Team battles and multiple people having to fight strong pokemon in order to catch them would also be a neat idea.  You could create your own teams and strive for good or evil purposes in the world within a lighthearted environment.

Not everyone's cup of tea but a lot of unique things could be done here, it's accessible, it is simple and it is fun.

2.  Naruto.  Blasphemy for bringing this up here!  A stealth/skill based ninja game based upon warring villages and highly-customizable character, abilities and teams would be very fun.  Plus most asian-themed games end up being korean games that, unfortunately, lack the proper funding to create an impressive world.

A fast-moving fast-fighting game with flashy abilities, aspects of stealth and deceptive moves would be a fun PvP experience with common enemy raid bosses.

3.  Bleach.  Another blasphemy of pop little kids anime blah blah move on to why it makes a good MMO.  Evil spirits versus good spirits with the human world as a battlefield.  Tons of character customization and abilities, of course (like in Naruto above).  Three worlds to explore between, the evil spirit world, the good spirit world and the human world.  Abilities and weapons could be customized fully and evolve along with the characters to be truly unique.  This would be almost like a City of Heroes / City of Villians game with weapons and spirits.  Of course it could be expanded to be much, much more, as well.

Very strong PvP and PvE elements available here and a very established theme and world.

4.  A Gundam type game done well via Gundam Wing as a reference.  Mech combat on a planetary and inter-planetary scale with other planes, ships, tanks and hand-to-hand fighting included.  Could end up sort of like EVE in the end in space but start off as a guy on a planet on foot.  Very political and very combat-heavy but with lots of options and objectives to gain power.

There are plenty of other great ideas that can be pulled out of japanese anime but these I think would work as awesome MMOs.

Objectiveness is delivered with a lack of personality made for the mainstream but never used for the mainstream.

Damn, I can't believe I didn't think of this with my last post, but...

I'd give my first born, your first born, and one of my testicles for an MMORPG set in the Black Company world as written by Glen Cook. If you're into very dark, evil, mind-bending fantasy, you owe it to yourself to read these books.

Start with the Books of the North (the original trilogy of the Black Company).

No godless person can comprehend those minute distinctions
in doctrine that provide true believers excuse for mayhem.

A real space MMO that's not star wars, and one that doesn't keep you in a ship at all time.

I'd really like to see a well-done Wheel of Time MMORPG, personally.  I know there is one in the works now, so maybe my dream will be realised.  Whilst the books needed to end a few volumes in, I rather liked the setting itself.

In that case, you may already be pleasantly surprised in some distant future... unless you're thinking about some other MMO in the works (you can never be sure with these licences getting turned into MMOs these days).
