Too bad I wasn't paying more attention to this games OB start or I'd be sitting here with the rest of you, key in hand, waiting for start. *sigh* Guess I'll just have to wait and see if the hype's still there after OB to determine if I'll join in at launch. Have fun you guys, make sure you give good dev feedback to make this game as good as possible for those of us waiting for launch day!

Hope so anyways, because I would like to see everyone that actually wants to get a look at it have some fun and help stress test as much as possible heh. |

People need to stop calling this -Open-, it's not -Open- if it was you wouldn't be seeing all the talk about people looking for keys now would you. |

Yep. Very true. The days of TRUE open betas are seemingly gone. This should be called "Selective Open Beta" or "SOB" because it makes you feel like saying the vulgar expression for the acronym "SOB." Oh well, Aion and all these are games will soon realize that their Selective Open Betas are actually costing them money. Truly open betas get people hooked and make the player want to return and try to continue on the path they left off on. That is what got me hooked to Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, PlanetSide many other MMOs. Games like this just make me wonder if they are hiding issues they are having or purely out for the money (buy the preorder to get in). |

There are a few issues...
MMOGS these days cost a shed load of cash to develop and bring to market if you have a mass market product.
There are risks associated with opening up your mmog to everyone in an "open" beta interms of numbers and the managemett/ prediction of. Releasing a certain number of keys allows for that to be somewhat managed in that respect. The technical challenges of launching mmogs is not a trivial one.
Years ago you would struggle to get numbers for an open beta now you struggle to manage them for popular mass market product.
As you say above...you can use these things for marketing and the hype, restriction of supply is a factor in determining what will sell more product a truly open to everyone beta or a number restricted open beta. I dont think your analysis that these 'Selective Open Betas' cost them moneyin lost box sales is particularly well founded. A lot of people will buy a mmog and discover they cant run it , dont like it, are too stupid to play it etc etc nevermind the distinct possibility the game will have bugs and some severe technical issues . People not prepared to fork for the game upfront may well have plenty of other games to go "beta test" after they tried this one and thesedays mmorpg are not going to smack so many people in the gob and will therefore feel samey .without the hyoppe, the restrictions who says more wont buy if they dont get into beta than do buyif they dont... ?

Well you really dont have to buy the whole pre order just pay $5 to hold your copy and get your beta key. You can also pay $7 to fileplanet and get the beta key and a faster download. |

37mins to go =D |

Yeah, as a fileplanet subscriber I can seemingly get as many keys as I wish. Not sure if they are aware of that though.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle#Beta It does not say Open Beta means the general public even though that is often the case, just means a larger group than CB. |
