Hey Everyone just wanted to share an experience I had, My system has been fine for almost five years, its gone through upgrades and what have you. ANyways, never had a keylogger show up on my cpu till I downloaded Xfire, then 2 weeks later my wow account and email got hacked, i got it all back, but its just a pain you know.

Anyways wanted to let you guys know, and see if anyone else had problems with keyloggers after beginning to use xfire.

How do you know the keylogger was in Xfire?

I'm not questioning what happened, just asking how you found it was actually the program that carried the keylogger.  I've had xfire for 4.5 years and never had a problem.  Well, except that it used to crash EQ2 for nearly a year (so I never used it with that game).

Its just the only change thats been made to my program list in a long long time, the logger itself was in my registry, in its own folder, not sure how it got there, but thats the only thing I can guess at

What are the creation dates for the directories of Xfire and the keylogger? Unless you got the Xfire client from an unofficial source it is extremely unlikely Xfire is the source for the keylogger.  If it were there would be a /lot/ of people stating they too had a keylogger after installing xfire.

And from the xfire.com site itself:

* Why does my security software detect Xfire as a keylogger?
The file that is actually causing this false positive is xfire_toucan_xxxxx.dll. This dll will hook into windows watching for keyboard and mouse activity. The reason it does this is for our 'auto-afk' feature which you can enable on the Tools | Options | Privacy tab. In order to know whether or not you're afk, we have to monitor the keyboard.

We also use toucan to do In-Game messaging. For In-Game it actually injects itself into every running process to determine if it's a game, and if it is a game, whether or not it supports XIG and should 'hook in' to the process.

So did I, and I've still never gotten a keylogger.

Its probably more of a coincedence then anything else.  You might have been targeted by an actual hacker on WoW because you looked like you had good stuff on your character.  You might have gotten it off a website years ago, and the person who made the keylogger is finally utilizing it.
