The folks at TenTonHammer are reporting on a rumor originating from an "inside source" that the developers at Sony Online Entertainment are again partnering with LucasArts to bring a new Star Wars game to the MMOG space. The new MMOG is reportedly designed to be casual in nature, and make use of the browser-based tech that SOE's other successful casual property, Free Realms, is utilizing. The new game would be set in the Clone Wars era.

Keep in mind this is still classified as a rumor, as we currently have no other information to substantiate these claims. But as soon as we do, we'll bring it right to you!

Get the full report over at TenTonHammer.

It makes sense and I guess it'll help protect the future of SWG staying alive.

I'd rather hear Pre NGE servers from SOE though.

My thought is its an alternative game for kids to play instead of the upcoming SWTOR game. I wonder if SWG will go away now?

It has to be true, i have internet links.

I can't believe that SOE or LucasArts would create a game at this point that could potentially draw players away from the game being developed by Bioware. I can understand them not worrying about SWG as it's had it's chance, but another MMO, especially a free to play one, might cause a lot of damage to SW:TOR which I can only imagine has far more money invested in it.

Maybe it's just something they are whipping out for cartoon network, some cheesy little side-scroller. You know how rumors are.

copy pasted from another thread. sorry to lazy to re type my opinion

SOE was trying to win a bid to do an MMO based on post EP6 which was going to be SWG2, but in the form of an expansion (Thunderheart hinted at this on the forums about moving the timeline forward) years ago, but BioWare beat them on that bid, and the failure of the NGE pretty much killed that. This came from a SOE employee, who still has some of the art assets. This must all be due in part to the newer leadership LEC is now under since the departure of Jim Ward (The Warden).

But keep in mind with Jim Warden gone, LEC is run differently now. They aren't above bringing classics back (like Monkey Island), and being more open with licensing of their IP. Jim destroyed LEC reputation for making good games. This is why Lucas Arts sucked for so long.

Most likely this game is geared for the younger Star Wars fans (and casual). Sad to say I'm sure it will do well. Most kids don't know or care about pre-cu, NGE or any of that baggage us older gamers carry.

The good news is if this is the casual Star Wars MMO for the Cartoon Network fans, TOR should be less casual for the older gaming crowd.

Not really, the 100k people who even remember SWG are clearly not their target audience.

If they can copy the huge success of Free Realms with a casual Star wars MMO based on the Clone Wars TV series marketed to the kids, its going to be another solid win for both SOE and LA.  I would even go so far as to say they already tested an item or two on Free Realms for the possible game.  Has anyone ever seen the "Star Shot Candle" that folks could win this summer?  First thing my kid said was  "looks just a like a lightsabre" and it does...minus the fireworks spewing out of it at random times.

EDIT - Found a shot of it. A poor in quality but you get the idea. the Star Shot is on the right. Tell me that SOE couldn't slap some Jedi robes on that guy and he would be good to go.

This is actually pretty funny because this Clone Wars game could end up with at least similar art style if not better graphics than TOR, and since Bioware decided that The Old Republic was going to look way more similar to the movies than KoToR it will be like clones of each other.

I played (for about 30 mins) Free Realms and saw about 30 mins of TOR gameplay, let me tell you - I would rather play free realms Star Wars than TOR.

But who am I kidding, I wouldn't play any of those, but would at least recommend Star Wars Free Realms to kids under 12.

THE only way SOE is gonna get out from under the reputation they have for totally trashing their games especially star wars galaxies  is to BREAK the mold  and develop a  next generation  game  not the "next generation rutt clones"  that have been shoveled out one after another.

they need a new AI  and a new way to approach content and quests  and get away  from robot like  vending machines

make the game a bit more complex  (rebels and empire should not have been fighting  like even matched  armies  their tactics should have been based on their relative size   bombings,  hacking,  arms theft,  smuggling  ect...

when the space expansion came out and it was little more than an x-wing arcade shoot em up  I knew  SOE had

"JUMPED THE SHARK"

there are all sorts of new methods for developing games   but these game makers keep doing the ol cut and paste,, change the skin  they have been doing for 20 years

just look at fallen earth  it is an obvious example of  a cut and paste.. actually the graphic level is adaquite for me to enjoy the game  but the content..  very generic and sparce and allot of "been there done that"

and aftermath is right up my ally  that gave it +2 right out of the gate  but it still didnt measure up.

SAD.

make a world, not a game, we dont want another game.

Is this some type of sick joke...

Just what we need, another stars wars mmo from the morons over at SOE/Lucas Arts who came up with the NGE/CU crap.

Personally I think this is thier effort to draw players away from Bioware's upcomming SW:KOTOR MMO.

If I  had to make a choice between the two, I  pick Bioware's SW:KOTOR MMO over anything coming out of SOE.

What huge success?  Free realms doesn't even have 1 fully populated server despite 5 million people trying the game.

From what I understand, characters aren't stuck on just one server in FreeRealms.  When you login each time you get to choose which server you want to load into for the day.

What makes a good MMO? Good quality, good customer service, good business model, good fun.

Masochism: "The deriving of pleasure, or the tendency to derive pleasure, from being humiliated or mistreated, either by another or by oneself.  A willingness or tendency to subject oneself to unpleasant or trying experiences."

LA partnering with SOE again for another StarWars MMO?  See above lol.

True, but this is the highest population I have seen the servers show in months and I have not seen a high poluation server in a long time.  The login screen was also changed to default all players onto server 1-2 unless they specifically chose another server.  Free realms is a social game and one thing that is true with all mmos is that people will gravitate to central points.  Be it an ingame location or a certain server.  In free realms it is server 1 and server 2.

Now imagine that was the server screen to age of conan or any other mmo on the market.  Imagine if funcom was bragging about their free trial getting 5 million unique users signed up to try the game.

Who would ever call that a huge success?

I don't see any reason why the failure of free realms will not just be repeated again by soe in another casual kids game.  The leadership of the company has lost touch with what players want a long long time ago.

- Over 5 million players and counting

- Trading Card game by Topps

- Comic Books published by Wildstorm

- Guiness Book of World Record set by "The Dares" for playing in the real world and Free Realms (Worldwide free advertisement for SOE)

- in August, launched Free Realms in French, German, Spanish (Castilian), Spanish (Latin American) and English (UK).

- Rumors of Free Realms coming to PSP

- LA apparently seeing the success of Free Realms and the potential of increased $$$, decides to partner with them to build a Star Wars world in the Free Realms model.

One mmo I'm certainly not looking forward to.

Ripping off the concept of Free Realms and setting it in that horrible horrible clone wars universe? Uhrrgg.

GTFO SOE and go go Bioware... seriously.
