Life Liberty and the Pursuit of those that would threaten It |
Ok ive recently went back to check out wow again and something caught my eye while there downloader was patching. On the cover of there quartly magazine was a picture of what looked like to me possiblely a gnome in a space suit going backwards firing some kind of rifle. Is this a Cat out of the bag. Anyone ? In referance to there new mmo. Jihad works both ways |

A full blown Diablo mmorpg would be awesome. But I would rather see a Starcraft version, almost Planetside style. But it will probably be hello kitty versus sailor moon. Seems like between crap like Fiesta, Dragonica, etc...the developers think we are all regressing instead of evolving. But actually with all the Wizard 101's and Flyff's maybe we are regressing. The gaming industry is really falling apart. |

Complex, time and thought intensive games just don't sell as easily as the basic quick head bashing genre. So there isn't really much incentive for well established developers to spend resources on much else. For people looking for something a bit different, I think you'll have to put the majority of your hope in indy developers, since there primary subscription potential is from the niche audience. Ive already stated in a previous thread that Blizzards next MMO will be a sandbox that will refine yet again, in the same way they did with WoW, the MMORPG genre.
And if anyone can do it, it will be Blizzard. Theyve got the money and the smarts and the business sense to do it. Azure - UO - Retired |

I hope Blizzard supports the game better than they did WoW. For all the money they made off that game expansions were few and far between. |

Exciting news! I look forward to seeing what they come up with. I just hope it's not so freaking instanced. |

I expect a sandbox mmo - possibly a sci-fi. |

Isn't this rather old news? I swear they said this last year. Anyway, let's hope it doesn't turn out like their Ghost project. |

well it makes sense. If it was anything like in WoW they would have just added it to WoW rather than make a competitor for it, so this must be quite good. The new FF should be ground-breaking as well, as FF tend to do. |

Blizzard making a sci-fi sandbox? I don't think so. Blizzard likes money if they want to make a killing they will create a sci-fi themepark that's accessible to everyone. Please no giant empty worlds where I need to "find my own fun" Give me a good story, quality classes and options at endgame and you will have another winner on your hands. Not really, the Blizztards would have ate it up. |

Expansion is not the only support. WOW has plenty of content update in-between expansions. The real question is whether they are putting out a good deal of content, and it is a yes in my books. |

The company that has made it's fortune on doing what has been done before is going to stray from that model? I don't think so.
Whatever they do will have been done before, it doesn't mean it won't be polished or play well, and it certainly doesn't mean it won't be another success like all their other titles. But my money is definetly that they stick to their business model which is do what people already like but try and do it better and more polished. |

Getting tired of that statement, no they do not.
Asheron's Call has done FREE MONTHLY content additions since it's launch 10 years ago, WoW has not come anywhere near the amount of free content AC has added. |

Yeah Turbine is the master of Free updates. DDO has not had one paid expansion if I remember correctly.

My guesses: Cash shop tween game like free realms - 60% WoW in space - 30% Something else - 10% |

Last time I have read an article about the history of Blizzard. They did twice something completely new and both times they did it the same way.
1st time - beginning of the 90s
They took a very small niche of the game market - RTS. For most game companies RTS was not interesting. Only a small specific group of players played RTS and the potential revenue was very low.
Blizzard made two very successful RTS games: Warcraft and Starcraft. In the next 10 years they made RTS the dominating segment of the game market and they dominated it.
2nd time - 2004
They took a very small niche of the game market - MMO. For most game companies MMO was not interesting. Only a small specific group of players played MMO and the potential revenue was very low.
Blizzard made a very successful MMO game: World of Warcraft. In the next 5 years they made MMO the dominating segment of the game market and they are dominating it.
3rd time - ????

What is this niche? One possibility is a 100% sandbox MMO. I think that at the moment only EVE comes close as being a sandbox MMO (my opinion is that it is still not a true sandbox MMO). |

alecbr if one company can afford the risk its blizzard. lot of company must be shaking why! say this new venture is one that isnt popular not because theres no player but because company wont risk it they ll be like why didnt you think of that sooner lol i bet if the next blizzard game is a succes(again) lot of head will roll from the competition espacially made worst by the fact that the other companys havent been sitting idle but they try to remix what wow did.when in fact they should invent .but very few company are willing to take the risk . they ll word it nice but in the end its just paste and go. honestly i do hope blizzard do it again it will prove to the whole gaming comunity that most of the other company are copy cat there are exeption like older forgotten game but the new company born in the 2004+ those are moslty copy cat check wow how many copied this a lot lol. |

Copying others is not taking risks. Making something new is a risk. Playing: EvE |

Spending 10-20 Million or whatever on a videogame that could litterally net you zippo and never break even, is a risk no matter how you slice it. |

I'm very pleased to read that they're looking to do something a bit different rather than rehash the same formula but with a different skin. With FFXIV also trying a new approach perhaps we can finally experience some genuine fresh creativity in MMOs in the next couple of years. Furthermore if Blizzard go in a different direction it may finally break the cycle of games which copy WoW a little too closely for my liking. Maybe we will finally see the elusive next generation MMO soon (fingers crossed). |
