I've only played the beta, so I was wondering if tanks are necessary in this game and which class would make the best tank?

Of course they are necessary and the Gaurdian is the stereotypical tank class. Dark Templars can also tank.

 Dark Temps are great at multiple mob tanking but for the most part it is a guardian who is the standard tank.  However, with the Frenzy/Defense stances, Guardians can also dole out a lot of dps.

Any of the three tank classes can tank well if they have the right feats and gear.  The guard is the most specialized for holding aggro and taking damage.  The other two classes wear the gear but have hybrid elements to them.

You may want to pick based on if your rolling on a pvp or pve server.

Either way tanks are a must for raids, and are great flag runners for mini's.

 Right now guardians though dark templars can tank pretty well and dish out some really nice dps during raids. Conquerors have an update coming out soon so we'll see how they fare in it all.

I would recomend a Guardian if you want to main tank raids, otherwise DTs can OT  raids and make fine tanks for regular instance runs as well.
