You're welcome.

Nythious wins the /thread :)

Of course like another posted said you could just replace "Gamer" in that study with "Almost Any American sub-group" and the results would the same.

There is just more of us to love baby! Or be depressed over if thats the case :)

The average person that conducts these useless polls are overweight lazy and overpaid men that have probably never been good at games. Seriously this comes from the same group of people that did a survey on what color cars birds preferred to crap on. Their conclusion was white.

However, this quote from the original source made me laugh:
...The study, which was carried out in the Seattle-Tacoma area, found that gamers reported "lower extraversion, consistent with research on adolescents that linked video-game playing to a sedentary lifestyle and overweight status, and to mental-health concerns." ...
My gawd man!  How many different studies are they going to carry out in upper Washington State that prove that the Seattle area residents are depressed?

I mean that is where Grunge came from!  There was a study that came out about 10-15 years ago where most 20 somethings were depressed because of the baqd weather year round and not beiong able to get outside much.  Sounds to me like the person doing the sudy from that just got older and found Online Gaming!

LOL!

haha very good point! but man I wouldn't change the place it gave us Soundgarden and some great bands :)

Sounds more like most of the bar/pub/tavern goes that I know.  Same demographic as heavy drinkers.  Typical group of people that practice escapeism.  Just going online instead of in bottle for their escape.

Whatever the age of WoW players, those who post here about being "slim, healthy, happy" are a more interesting population to study than  the obese-nerd fantasm:

1) Nobody care, and trying to grab attention by putting yourself under the spotlight is a sign of immaturity;

2) If everything is so fine in your life, why are you arguing on the internet on mmorpg.com

3) if you spend some of your time playing MMo, it means when you're home, you're bored; tells alot about the real state of your relationships if you have children/wife, and your social relationships if you're not. going out drinking beer with "friends" is not being socially normal, it's just a necessity to get out of your daily routine with other people who talk loud and laugh about the most futile things;

Wether your slim or obese, don't forget that appearances can be deceiving; your contemp is a sign of mental weakness, certainly not mental health.

Nice cup of STFU for you!

"The average gamer, who took the survey, is 35, overweight, and more likely to be depressed"

Not that surprising.

I'm sure the younger crowd are less likely to take surveys.

The average person is now overweight apparently (according to the mind-f**kers who seem to want everyone to be constantly worried and depressed about everything).

Depressed people are probably a bit more likely to take surveys as they'll be more of them at home with spare time.

No the average person is now overweight because portion size has doubled in the last 30 years.

The problem is that we keep telling people it's okay to be overweight, and not to worry about what other people think. Too bad not worrying can lead to major health problems down the road.

Oh and you have a major misconception of depression if you think they sit at home on their computer all the time.

There's a mixture going on. People are maybe eating too much and not exercising enough + there's bossy mind f**kers who'll always be bossing about something, if people were 100% fit they'd be saying we're all too thin and need to eat more + the BMI bugs me because I used to be heavily into sports and people using the BMI as a measure is dumb and annoying.

Depression is on a wide spectrum. Mildly depressed people will be (at least a bit) more likely to be sat at home on the computer than a non-depressed person imo.

I sit on my arse in front of my computer 24/7 and stuff my face as much as possible (sometimes eating more than my 40 year old muscle built father).  I do not work out or exercise at all, I otherwise do no physical activity at all aside from running around my house looking for food. (Well, I do help at his job sometimes, which is manual labor.)  I am male, 21 years old and weigh 96 pounds on average.

It's all in the food, almost nothing more. (Metabolism is what you make it, though genes help.)

Simply put: Eat organic and you'll have little problems with weight.

I like being blunt! /flame shield on.

Some people are blessed with slim bones.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the average age of the average gamer in the United States was 33 in 2006, and it is inching up every year. The average age of someone that bought a videogame was 39 (some studies report 40).

The notion of the average gamers being children is an old myth. Guess who bought Pong in the 70s? "Old people". Guess who bought Atari 2600s and Colecovision in the early 80s?  "Old people". Guess who bought Commodore 64's for gaming? "Old people". Guess who buys Xbox 360s and video cards and MMOs, yep... you guessed it... "Old people". The main reason that so many people seem to think it is 13 year olds playing all these games is because for so many years video game publishers only openly marketed to this very under-represented demographic.

Are there kids playing computer and video games? Yes. Are they the norm? No. And year by year they are becoming LESS the norm than ever before.

Umm. My kids, nieces and nephews between them must have hundreds of video games. They haven't bought any of them.

I'm 19, underweight although slightly depressed, so they almost hit me.

Also, I'm not single, not living at home, and pretty social, based on my amount of (rl) friends and parties I go to. :P

Demographics can't hit me! :P

Maybe is the other way around? Overweight people get more into videogames than atletic people? they are not saying videogames get you fat, they only expose the numbers. But actually in the US and other Occidental-lifestyle countries more and more people are getting fat from unhealthy food, many of them are couch potatoes, so it makes sense that a LOT videogame players are fat.

Im 38 and overweight (not really depressed) and have been reading this kind of studies since the 90s, so it might be true.

I'm fairly sure that's exactly what this study meant to show, but the knee-jerk reaction thru this thread seen it as the opposite.  More likely as you said; fat, lonely depressed 30-somethings are more likely to look for some sort of escape for their real life, hence, are attracted to MMOs, where they can be heroic and actually feel like they accomplish something.

THEY MUST BE THIEVES!!!!!.......  xD just kidding, you make a nice point, that´s why when there an study like this they have to document HOW they measure the results, in this case the study is about gamers/ players not buyers, Katrar got into the buying matter and thats how we got off road...

No, actually you are not majority, you are minority, gamers used to be the minority (against none gamers), now gaming is going mainstream, but the average person in the US is FAT, so it makes sense that the average gamer is FAT, is just that not you or your friends are the average gamer...

Pretty spot-on, if you ask me.  Biggest MMO nerd I know, 36 years old. overweight, horrible hygiene, lives with his gamer roommate and his two cats.  Doesn't have a girlfriend, doesn't date, doesn't know how to even have a casual conversation without bringing up a game.  Will wax nostalgic about SWG before it was "ruined", blather on for hours about all the toons he bought in EQ2, and how he's quitting WoW...again...for the nth time.  He's gotten so mad gaming before, that he's told me he's punched his LCD monitor off his desk, and put his fist through the drywall in his apartment.  He's been late for work because he was raiding, he's missed paying bills from buying gold.  He's had to ask his parents for money to renew his car tags...because he blew all his money on EQ2 characters.  He's pretty much the joke of our workplace, and he's too oblivious to all of it, since he's just in his own little fantasy world.  I think MMOs are the escape he has from being a complete loser in real life.

He's the reason that playing MMOs is one of my biggest secrets, and why I won't tell many people that I do.   He's also why I barely play anymore, or if I do, it's in extremely limited amounts of time.  The idea of ending up like him...no thanks.

Man! you have to quit before MMOs kill your life!!!  RUN!!!!!

1st, maybe you are right about him escaping into the MMOs, 2nd at least at your workplace its VERY advising not to tell anyone you are playing games unless you want to be treated like him, 3rd a big LOL, its like you are saying MMOs will get you fat, etc like him, thats just funny and untrue, chill up man! you must be below the average age I guess...

Well you didnt take the survey!  this kind of study isnt new, and they allways get the same result, most gamers are adults, males, a bit fat, and now depressed, maybe many dont have girlfriends? so they arent getting any and have plenty of time to game as a result...

You haven't been paying attention at all. The average gamer is ~35, married, and has children.
