My gawd man!  How many different studies are they going to carry out in upper Washington State that prove that the Seattle area residents are depressed? 

 

I mean that is where Grunge came from!  There was a study that came out about 10-15 years ago where most 20 somethings were depressed because of the baqd weather year round and not beiong able to get outside much.  Sounds to me like the person doing the sudy from that just got older and found Online Gaming!

Sounds more like most of the bar/pub/tavern goes that I know.  Same demographic as heavy drinkers.  Typical group of people that practice escapeism.  Just going online instead of in bottle for their escape.

Whatever the age of WoW players, those who post here about being "slim, healthy, happy" are a more interesting population to study than  the obese-nerd fantasm:

1) Nobody care, and trying to grab attention by putting yourself under the spotlight is a sign of immaturity;

2) If everything is so fine in your life, why are you arguing on the internet on mmorpg.com

3) if you spend some of your time playing MMo, it means when you're home, you're bored; tells alot about the real state of your relationships if you have children/wife, and your social relationships if you're not. going out drinking beer with "friends" is not being socially normal, it's just a necessity to get out of your daily routine with other people who talk loud and laugh about the most futile things;

Wether your slim or obese, don't forget that appearances can be deceiving; your contemp is a sign of mental weakness, certainly not mental health.

The problem is that we keep telling people it's okay to be overweight, and not to worry about what other people think. Too bad not worrying can lead to major health problems down the road.

Oh and you have a major misconception of depression if you think they sit at home on their computer all the time.

 

There's a mixture going on. People are maybe eating too much and not exercising enough + there's bossy mind f**kers who'll always be bossing about something, if people were 100% fit they'd be saying we're all too thin and need to eat more + the BMI bugs me because I used to be heavily into sports and people using the BMI as a measure is dumb and annoying.

Depression is on a wide spectrum. Mildly depressed people will be (at least a bit) more likely to be sat at home on the computer than a non-depressed person imo.

 

 

I sit on my arse in front of my computer 24/7 and stuff my face as much as possible (sometimes eating more than my 40 year old muscle built father).  I do not work out or exercise at all, I otherwise do no physical activity at all aside from running around my house looking for food. (Well, I do help at his job sometimes, which is manual labor.)  I am male, 21 years old and weigh 96 pounds on average.

It's all in the food, almost nothing more. (Metabolism is what you make it, though genes help.)

Simply put: Eat organic and you'll have little problems with weight.

I like being blunt! /flame shield on.

Some people are blessed with slim bones.

Guess who bought Commodore 64's for gaming? "Old people". Guess who buys Xbox 360s and video cards and MMOs, yep... you guessed it... "Old people". The main reason that so many people seem to think it is 13 year olds playing all these games is because for so many years video game publishers only openly marketed to this very under-represented demographic.

Are there kids playing computer and video games? Yes. Are they the norm? No. And year by year they are becoming LESS the norm than ever before.

Umm. My kids, nieces and nephews between them must have hundreds of video games. They haven't bought any of them.

They almost hit you they come nothing close to hit you you are 19 the average is 35, you are underweight the average is overweight.

But actually in the US and other Occidental-lifestyle countries more and more people are getting fat from unhealthy food, many of them are couch potatoes, so it makes sense that a LOT videogame players are fat.

I'm fairly sure that's exactly what this study meant to show, but the knee-jerk reaction thru this thread seen it as the opposite.  More likely as you said; fat, lonely depressed 30-somethings are more likely to look for some sort of escape for their real life, hence, are attracted to MMOs, where they can be heroic and actually feel like they accomplish something. 

The average *person* is likely to be overweight and depressed in this country. 

I'm only 34... but the rest is spot on!

The average male enjoys watching sports on TV, but does not practice any sport (unless you count beer lifting as one).

You haven't been paying attention at all. The average gamer is ~35, married, and has children.

I am 28 and could probably gain a few pounds.... I dont know any gamers who are overweight.
