Originally posted by Elesthor You are right, it is not launch. It is the marketing campaign designed to hook people so they will purchase the game once it launches. Still it is classified as Beta and no mater what they are using it for or what you believe they are doing all the 'rules' that apply to every Beta test applies here too. Open beta is pretty much the launch of the MMO these days. Developers put so much effort into promoting their "Open Beta" and people flock to play. This is where the people who are on the fence about paying for a new MMO get to try it out and decide if they will buy it or not. I would say it's even more important then the launch day, it's a time to win over people who are undecided. You people who always spout the typical "It's in beta" line don't understand how MMO's work these days. Maybe 5 years ago I would agree that yes it's in beta and we should give some slack, but in today's brutal MMO market that excuse just doesn't cut it anymore. |

Where is the Beta here? You have pre-ordered, you got a key, you are invited to join the universe.
You can't play things out like this, then when you screw up claim...oh but it was just the Beta ! No it wasn't just the Beta, the Beta testing you did behind closed doors excluding your customers from participation, you then used your Beta like some sort of prize and now that you screwed it up you want to pretend that it was a real beta? |

If you are on the fence and you can't patch the client many are likely to give up, delete, and move along. It is really not a very good scenario unelss there are trials soon after launch. And my guess is, you probably didn't follow CO very extensively nor were you very eager for it to launch. I'm not saying you are a hater. I'm just saying you and your friends didn't invest time tracking it but are just curious. I'm even willing to say that your initial attitude to the game may lean towards negative for whatever reason (ie genre, beta reviews...etc). If you are giving up after one day (the first day of open beta) then I am guessing your mind was already made up and Cryptic would have had to make a perfect game to hook you which is impossible. You probably have a different MMO that you are excited about that's about to launch. I'm willing to bet you'd have patience with that game if for some reason the game had a patch issue on the first day of open beta. Those who are really on the fence will revisit the game a few days later to allow the devs to fix the patch. Again, had this been at launch when you already spent the $50, then that's a whole different issue. |

The thing is, whether you think it right or wrong, people attempt to play something, it goes wrong, they move on to something else.
You can claim it was Beta, you can make up your own word, lets say, Xasticii, and claim that Xasticii is actually a phase of game development that isn't release.
If you release to the public and then fail to deliver, the public move on to something else.
Unfortunately that is the way of the game world, it afflicted SW:G before they even released....you can't be a Jedi, bang went thousands and thousands of subscriptions that they would surely have gotten, oh we will RGE it and you can now be a jedi....too late. People don't look backwards, you try something, it don't work, lets see what is coming next. |

This is a Beta. I encourage all those who complained (and still complain) about the patcher complications to look up the definition of what a "Beta" is. .. Seriously. Considering this problem was discovered during BETA, proves that Beta works! The goal is to find these problems and iron them out before a retail release. So many stupid people, so little time.

That is just my opion and we all know what THAT is good for! |
I hesitate the post too much in this thread as it appears to be posting more about feelings towards the game and less about questioning certain aqspects of it.
However, to predict the downfall of the game on patching during an open beta is not a very good argument. To say that an Open Beta is the launch of the game is not a valid statement either.
Now, to say this will not leave a bad taste in everyone's mouth and their attitude towards the game is a definate yes. However, if that was all it took to kill a game there would be scarse few games on the market right now. What WILL kill the game is the spreading of mis-information and prejudice for some unknown agenda ( again, not pointing fingers at anyone ).
What WILL kill the game is the game not being fun to anyone.
What WILL kill the game is a torrent of bugs not addressed or imposed in patching after release.
Do not liken this game to Vanguard, Tabula Rasa, E & B. Those gamess had some serious issues long before release that were not addressed. Some say there are serious issues in this game that are not addressed. So be it, if that is the case it will be reflected in subscription and retention rates.
NOT becuase of a patcher fubar in the beta. Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them. |

I've read a lot of 'This game will sureley fail' posts on this forum, but this is one of the lamest. |

I played Champions thru closed Beta and all it is....is World of Heroes ie meaning a combination of WoW and City of Heroes. I hated WoW I've tried playing 3 times and could never bring myself to play longer than 2 months each time. And i've played CoH for going on 5 years. The only thing I liked about Champions was the cell shading. The Questing is redundant and the power and battle system sucks. I am just gonna play Aion which I Beta'd and love. Then STO when it is released. I like Cryptic I just don't like Champions, I hope alot of people like it so it doesn't fail. |

I'm not a hater, but yeah I don't like games with micro transactions or Cryptic. I am not saying i'm having the problems or I care. I was never going to play this game and I was in beta before this. I don't go around these boards giving negative reviews because I don't care. The only thing I did was warn some people against the lifetime sub because it is a rather shallow game. This topic interested me because I think many people underestimate what an open beta has become and what it means for the launch of MMORPG's. A lot more people than you think jump on OB's on a whim. They get emailed from Fileplanet or some various site or here from a friend and try the game out. It is these people that won't put up with much other than a hand fed great experience before they move along. I think it is a bad situation for Cryptic and that makes me happy. Regardless I have 3 gaming friends who couldn't even try the open beta before giving up. These are guys that I play strat's with and not MMO's. They won't be playing Aion either. They do try open beta's though and who knows they might have loved Champions. Just my 2 cents. |

The OP must me be mentally retarded or he is some whiny little cheapskate who did'nt get his full 5$ full of the deposit. Mind you this, it is an Open BETA! That's right! What a surprise! That means "Testing is what you are here for. Don't like it then stop playing MMOs". Seriously, you have no idea how many posts and topics I have seen about how this will ruin Champions. Seriously? Why so much hate for a game that has'nt even been released yet. They gave out all of the Pre-order keys so they could have a range of the people who would be playing. Not so you can just get a free sneak peak at the game, but to also check out server stability. It's nothing new. And also to the people that said Aion had a "Better" Closed beta, it did. You know why? The game has been released in the East for 8 months! I would hope it was better considering all the polish time that WAS used. Kids need to stay out of Betas and let the grown-ups and mature playaers have all the fun. Plain and Simple.

If it sucks then it deserves the negative feelings it gets. If it is decent, then that means the problems encountered to get the game to that polished state, were fixed.
This is the use beta testers provide to the game developer. If some "jobless wonder" is only looking for a free game to play, then fine, they should uninstall the BETA and move onto to leech off another community. Posting prejudiced, angry threads with no point to them, well, that just wastes the time and money of those who are trying to fix beta issues.
I hate open betas. I think beta should be for people who actually spend some time at the end of the night, to enter the bugs they found. I don't think it should be used as a marketing ploy either. Because beta is supposed to be about OBJECTIVE TESTING AND REPORTING of bugs.
Bureyku, you and your three friends strike me as objective people. But the OP was just mad his freebie wasn't available to him and decided to make a personal, biased attack. |

Yeah I don't think of the OP as a friend or ally and I don't like his post. It's cool this is getting figured out in beta and all, but these days OB is more of a preview for people than an actual beta which is why i'm saying it's not that good for Cryptic. I dislike Cryptic very much though so this isn't something that makes me upset or anything... |

Problems I have with this statement is that some games are miscategorized every game since wow has not done bad there in fact are a few games released since wow that are performing (we can only assume) well but even other than that games like Vanguard,AOC equaled paid beta which of course angered lot's of people and kept them away games like Warhammer and DDO just weren't considered much fun by the masses which I think is a bit different, you have a point though in that if a game releases "rough" it is difficult to get the audience behind you but the question is why? DDO has fundamental design flaws that made it horribly dull for many (me included) so what could they possibly do other than an NGE? Warhammer I thought was much the same of course people complained but the sense of deception didn't exist for these two games like it did for AOC which many will never return to no matter what, and where games like Vanguard and AOC messed up is that some folks will never even purchase a game made by these companies again. And lastly CO s not released yet so you certainly shouldn't be lumping this game in with the likes of AOC or Vanguard both of whom released their games with quite a bit of deception, though it does look to be heading the way of DDO and WAR simply not very innovative nor fun. |

Well, it's worked for me. I persevered through the downloading and patching phase and managed to get on today. Looks good to me and if it keeps working as well as it has so far, I'll definately be buying it. Anyone who lets a bit of trouble the very first time the systems are seriously stressed is doing themselves a dis-service. At least get into the game and try it out before making a decision. You'll never know otherwise. |

Originally posted by Bureyku See, now the truth comes out why you posted the way you did. I think if you said the first time that you didn't like CO due to microtransactions, that's a legitimate reason. I don't particuarly like it myself but it is the trend of pretty much all MMOs these days. But that's a whole different topic. But the way you worded your previous post, it sounded like you were just one of those people who whine and complain no matter what. I also wanted to add, if you truly didn't care, you wouldn't even post. "Warn others of the lifetime sub?" Why? It's their money. Your dislike of Cryptic (for whatever reason) isn't allowing you to be objective. As for many players having a hand fed mentality...well, generally speaking those types of players don't last long in a MMO they only have a casual interest in. Like I said, if it's that easy to deter some people from a game then they never were the target audience. They never really wanted to play the game. And your comments also prove this. I think you and your friends just are not MMO-type players. Nothing wrong with that. There are other games than MMOs. But you seem to prove my statement in saying you and your friends are probably not the target audience. Now if you piss off the ones who really love the superhero genre...then Cryptic has a problem. But I think they did a good job. Is it perfect and completely revolutionary? Nope. It's evolutionary. And that's what I expected and I wager that's what most people expected as well. |

I agree. Especially giving the competition. Why play a buggy game when you can play Cox, which I think has better graphics, even though its a 5 year old game. Furthermoore, Aion's beta has been very smooth with virtually no game breaking bugs. |

A patcher failure during Open Beta, that appears to have been resolved (or worked around atleast) in one day by most reports, its not going to break CO. In two weeks time, and the end of the OB, then we should have better idea on what to expect of CO's future.
What is going to stop me from playing is the item shop added on to a subscription game. If I am paying 15/month I best be getting ALL items in the game including ornamental. |

As far as i have noticed none of you have had the balls to say Fuck you im not going to purchase this shit. Cept you all salavate to every mmo release expecting it to give you everything you want when in truth you don't even know what you just bought. Then you come to places like this to bitch and complain about dumb shit like. ZOMG they dont have crocodiles in this game they said they would have crocodiles this game is fail! another thing...what you are posting about has happend multiple times. if WoW was your first MMO i don't feel you have an opinion here. |

I pre-ordered WAR. There was tons of information bits that made it seem the game was going to be supercool...well, I was sadly disappointed. I waited for their extra class releases too, and it just was bland. I don't want to have to pre-order a new MMO again. I've just finished DDO unlimited beta. Sticking to that. I liked the game..It's going F2P also. Only pre-order for me now is HALO:odst...and that's not even a computer game.
