There is no game nowadays that everybody will agree on being the best but before the home comp took off there was only 3 games that everybody was playing space invaders,pac-man and astroids and everybody loved them. |

Totally subjective, with the advent of graphics more powerful process resource, games just aren't games anymore just eye candy. As far as gameplay goes:
The real answer is NO to the OPs question

Wasteland. Someone from the old school days tell me you thought it sucked, I dare you. ;) Okay in all fairness it's an old game so most newer gen gamers won't recognize it or be able to see past the CGA graphics, but it holds a special place in many gamers' hearts that played in the 80's and early 90's.

One word "PONG" The following statement is false |

Pong Defender Elite Privateer Empire King's Quest series (some better than others) Space Quest series (some better than others) Gunship! (Microprose rocked in those days) M1 Tank Platoon (Microprose REALLY rocked in those days) Railroad Tycoon (Did I mention Microprose absolutely ROCKED in those days?) Pirates! (In case you missed it, Microprose ROCKED ;)) A-10 Tank Killer (Dynamix) Doom Civilization (Sid Meier is a god) Rollercoaster Tycoon Command And Conquer: Red Alert Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 Icewind Dale Tribes (Dynamix) (Best online PvP game at least until the cheats started to appear) Neverwinter Nights EQ1 is probably the best "MMO" outside of the usual suspect Edit: Super Mario Kart was excellent as well for its time |

I second that and I would also nominate the original UO before it was neutered.

Anyone remember System shock 2? Bioshock kinda plays similar to it and I think some of the devs were the same, but Bioshock wasn't nearly as creepy or as atmospheric. But yea, the elite games. Even now developers havn't managed to make a sim that does space and planet flight as good or as seamlessly as Elite 2/3 (except maybe that Infinity: quest for earth MMO thats being made). |

Do not fear death, Death will come a knocking anytime it wants. |
OU, EQ1, Mario Bro's 1,2,3, Blades of Steel, Technobowl, Doom, Wolfensien, C&C, CounterStrike. I can name a few more. Sooner or Later |
Originally posted by thexrated Yup. Some of the all time greats are Zelda, Quake, Tetris, and I bet for each one there is a least one person who didn't like it. But if you add the stipulations (people who play video games, and at the time it was out), then pong wins because it was the only game out for a time.

Had to logon to post my picks.
For Computer - X-Com
For Console - The Road Rash series

Final Fantasy 7 Legend of Zelda ( The Original NES) Super Mario World (SNES) Street Fighter II (The One ring of fighting games.) DOOM GoldenEye (N64) ) GTA: Vice City StarCraft Resident Evil 4
While all of these games would be listed among my all time favorites. I will also go out on a limb and say these game have pretty much universal appeal. If you can honestly say you don't like one of these games then I'd day that means you don't care for that particular genre of game. |

Originally posted by -Ellessar- Think you should read what was posted above, these are games you like not that everyone would like. You even emphasis it with saying "Arguably the most popular...." the word arguably already implies people disagree.
I think the original poster was going more along the lines of proving the point that everytime someone posts they like/dislike a game someone argues on why they should dislike/like a game. The point is everyone enjoys different things and that is great since it allows for many types of games to be around and successful. If everyone did like the same thing there'd be one game and life would be unoriginal. |

If everyone did like the same thing there'd be one game and life would be unoriginal. I understand where the OP is going with this. But I stand by my list. I would argue that if you don't care for one of the games listed then that likley means you don't enjoy a particular genre of game and hence your opinion in that regard is moot. I'm NOT listing the best games of all time. I'm just listing games that I think 99.99% of the gaming world thought were good games. IE wheter you think StarCraft was the best RTS or Command and Conquer was doens't matter. The point is if you like RTS games then you certainly thought StartCraft was good. The standard the OP listed was simply "good." IE did you tink the game was good. Can anyone list a game everyone in the whole entire world though was good? Of course not, but the whole point of the thread was to give it a stab. Hence my list. |
