for taking in game vids and snapshots. Any one know a good tool that works fairly seamlessly for this purpose and is still free?

this is all based on observations:

 

i am pretty sure FRAPS is the best free to use tool.  That is based on the fact that most video's i watch are recorded with FRAPS and seems to be the tool of choice for most people.

 

No idea about any others though, maybe google it?

Just buy Fraps it's not expensive but I think Xfire is supporting more and more features that I think you can take pictures and stream video with it now.

Check out CamStudio at www.Camstudio.org, slightly better quality then fraps, and without the annoying watermark plus being open source makes this the best free video recording software around. Good luck!
