No, that wasn't a typo. NCsoft is up. Way up. 451% up! NCsoft has published their Q2 profits and things are looking good for the Korean MMOG publisher, with sales profits up 70% and operating profits up a whopping 353%. Aion and Lineage 2 are responsible for the lions share of the profits, with the original Lineage coming in third, while City of Heroes/Villains and Guild Wars round out the remaining profits. Hi All, What NC Soft didn't say is they saved money as well. By dumping "Tabula Rasa" and Mr. Richard Garriott and his brother, also recently Mr. Jeff Strain and Mr. David Reid of NC Soft West. NC Soft is reorganizing they're American branch and in the process saving capital. Not unlike many companies in today's economy laying off staff or other cut savings initiatives. ---------------------- |

This numbers clearly show that Aion had a good acceptance on its asian launch but much of this money comes from box sales and also other ncsoft games. I do think Aion will be successfull but this means nothing just yet. The next quarter will also be successfull sinceAion will also sell a good number of boxes in the weat, but only after the launch quarters we can see the way things go |

Too bad too many folks here are too stupid to comprehend that an increase in profits is meaningless if it comes as a result of MASS firings. Way to go NCSOFT. *golfclap* |

You read much into a simple post from some random dude. Company heads come and go, it's the nature of the beast in the gaming world. Showing a few white shirts there pink slip does not equal large amounts of capital. All companies drop products that don't sell and stream line the company in order to be more effective in a hard economic environment (except for ford and GM ). Get a clue, go to school ^^

Yep its only really departmental heads that where laid off or fired and restructured into NCSoft west All of the other staff such as community/ web dev etc based out of brighton are now working from home still in europe or have moved stateside. |

Its the same in the single player genre with COD for eg and anything done by Infinity Ward being so polished yet in the same series the Treyarch outings are bugy messes.
NCSoft IMO is a awesome studio I am a great fan of L2, GW and Aion but even with stellar titles such as Aion and GW2 coming they will never get the recognition of Blizzard or Bioware for a number of reasons 1. they are percieved as a publisher rather than a developer and the fact that its in house teams who produced L2 and Aion always seems to fall by the wayside.
2. Their games often have a asian feel to them which heavens forbid the west actually has to play I love the asian art style but the western mechanic's so NCSoft is the dev studio for me however a lot just become blinkered by the art style. Heck I do it myself so Im not berating it I logged of WOW after 15 mins as I could not stand the cartoony crap.

Amen to that, myself I find it pretty funny that despite the fact WOW has a cartoony feel to it, people are so addicted to this game, I know that its because of the massive pve/pvp and the unique customization but...the storyline in WOW seems to be lacking a little bit and most of the NCSoft games that I've played (Guild Wars mainly) have some of the most beautiful storylines ever. I would imagine that the new NCSoft games in the future would maintain that (great storylines) while Blizzard will just continue to make some more RTS style games. I think a mmo is pretty good if it has a great storyline, helps lead ya in a direction rather than just killing random mobs for items (like...W...O...W). However Diablo 3 seems to be in high regards though but the last time I've seen any new news about Diablo 3, its been a WHILE...so it feels that Blizzard is pretty slow in making new developments...or they just like to keep a low profile which is damn annoying...

Not to mention that towards the end the rubbish that TR's PR machine was pumping out was just plain embarrassing. When I received the email inviting me to resubscribe for a chance at immortality - i.e. sending my DNA into space with "Lord British" I knew the game had hit rock bottom... and started tunneling. It's a shame because the game had promise and I always kind of hoped that they would eventually sort it out. But I can totally understand why profits are up. I've resubbed to CoH recently - after hearing that they'd somewhat sorted out the AE mess - and have been pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying playing again. And my time in the Aion CB weekend events has been nothing but fun. That game is gonna make them money. |

*Sigh* Yet they had to just get rid of Tabula Rasa, it had ALOT of potential for growth! |

Hmm... Lineage I, Lineage II, Lineage III (in development), Exteel, Blade and Soul (in development), Aion (beta). Yup looks like a "purely publishing" company to me! Seriously it would have been more accurate to compare them to SOE (for better or worse) by saying they develop and publish games.

WOW O_O
Just wait until GW2 joins the mix. Apparently it's ready for unveiling "very soon according to the devs." |

I think we are looking at the forest and not the tree here, i mean who cares how/why they got money, the point is that they are a healthy company which will be capable due to their recourses to develop new games. And is it not that which we want? |

Yes Austin was but the vast majority from middle management and below at Austin where offered new posts if they chose not accept them then that's there own fault or they just wernt good enough to make the cut or they where part of the Tabula Rasa team.
Mass Firings compared to a team being laid of because the game was a complete failiure are 2 very different things IMO.
Or should NCSoft in your logic have kept all of the TR guys and found them posts that just wern't there. |

Dunno what planet some of you guys are from but a simple check of NCSofts quarterly report should tell you some very basic info www.ncsoft.net/global/ir/quarterly.aspx This large increase has been building since Aion launched. It's Aion and Lineage 1 / 2 that NCSoft makes most of its money off of. Total payroll is hardly down at all meaning whatever they cut in the U.S. isn't that much of an impact. Probably has more to do with the fact that we suck as a market and our games generate very little in terms of revenue. "other" would mean games like CoH and such which hardly has an impact on NCSofts numbers at all. And as a history leason, NCSoft has been cutting, moving and consolidation (eliminating) the U.S. studios for years now. We make them no money in other words. In fact we cost them tens of millions in development dollars and they have nothing to show for it but 2 shut down games, one marginally successful subscription game and one successful free to play (GW) game that is making very little money at the moment. Meanwhile everything they have made themselves is making them big money. |

When you only have a handful of offices in NA, yes, that is mass firing.
Who needs to go back to school?

Hi All, I quote: The way that NC Soft showed Mr. Richard Garriott the "airlock" (pun intended) was plain bad business. (maybe NC Soft was desperate or thinking its cunning) But Richard Garriott getting removed the way he did was a nasty breach of his contract. Of course Richard Garriott will settle out of court costing NC Soft a slap on the wrist financially speaking. --------------- Thanks "Torak" for those informative comments of yours above. ---------------------- |
