Firstly, you should try posting the question on the Aion guild forums.

But more to your point, 14 is really young, at least to me and many others to play these games.  Your best bet quite honestly is to lie about your age, because I can't really see any mature guild being keen on taking in 14 year old players.  It's nothing personal, but there is quite a stigma associated with being a high school freshman.

Your best bet in finding a guild is just to ask people in game if they'll invite you to their guild.

MMOs played: Horizons, Auto Assault, Ryzom, EVE, WAR, WoW, EQ2, LotRO, GW, DAoC, Aion, Requiem, Atlantica, DDO, Allods, Earth Eternal, Fallen Earth, Rift
Willing to try anything new

Just join a guild without voice chat.   When I was 16 I got HUGE laughs when I found out people I was "babysitting" where drunken bastards.   Also explained why I most always played on sunday and barely on other days.

Problem with lying about your age, is unless you are extremely mature for your age, most people are going to know rather quickly how old you are...or at least that you are no where near 18.

IMO, be truthful, be on your best behavior, and see what happens.

Its better to be quiet and perceived as stupid, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

From my experience, both from what I've experienced 1st hand and what I've seen from others, problem with younger players isn't so much maturity (in any normal community acting like a spoiled brat gets you nothing but ignores anyway), but instead with the fact that most are simply unreliable. Don't get me wrong, it's not because normal ones don't WANT to be there for the team, but because they have obligations and things they don't have any control over - school gets in the way of playtime, infamous mid raid "dinner g2g" AFKs, etc.

Yeah, there's ageism against minors in MMORPGs, and for a number of good reasons. Here are a few:

  • Adults often don't feel comfortable discussing mature or controversial topics around minors. Having to watch what you say all the time is a real pain in the kiester.
  • Minors are regarded as being immature (and rightly so, as this is fundamental to growing up). They are more prone to speaking and acting in ways that disrupt others' playing experience. They haven't had as much time to gain wisdom and life experience.
  • Minors are also regarded as being impressionable. This one is hard to explain, but basically, no responsible adult wants to emoitonally damage a minor due to " MMORPG drama" or unknowingly being a bad influence on them.

Because of that lack of life experience, as a poster above stated, it is difficult to lie about your age, especially if your guild has voice chat. If your young voice doesn't give you away, the way in which you speak and the subjects you choose to speak about almost certainly will, sooner or later.

I believe that it's actually easier for females to get away with lying about their age, simply because so many MMORPG players are male, and don't know what to listen for. If you're a male though, the way you speak and the sound of your voice will probably be a dead giveaway.

-----------------------------------------------------------

If you are bright, witty, charismatic and clever, you can get into many age-restricted guilds without lying by virtue of your pluck. There are some, however, with very strict requirements.

I've been in two guilds (one of which I eventually became leader of, God I hate that responsiblity) where anyone under 16 was absolutely not allowed to join FOR ANY REASON, PERIOD. SERIOUSLY.

And yet one of those guilds had a male and female member under the age of 16, and the other had a male under the age of 16.

100% aggreed!

  1. Stay honest, lying will not bring you much fun (it will almost certainly be noticed)
  2. Do your best to show "mature" behaviour (not leet speach shit talk or nonsense like that)
  3. The you might find out that some guilds will make exceptions to the rule, based on how you behave

good luck :)

I think you are pulling our leg.  Do guilds really check your age?  I have heard of that happening, but afaict its really not common.

My guild has an 18+ policy.

Now no, we dont card you and require a drivers license when you sign up, but its pretty obvious about 10 minutes after folks join vent who has and hasnt hit puberty, and who is and isnt still in highschool.

Back in early 00's (thats 2000 - 2004) it wasnt a big deal cause my guild was in the early 20's, but now we are all mid to late 20's and kids are just an anoyance 9 out of 10 times.

My guild in WoW has an 18+ policy. We did have some younger folk but by and large we do it to protect them from loosing their rights to play the game because of our language. We don't want t someone to loose their account because someone's mom walks in and hears us telling dirty jokes etc. In all honesty I've seen more drama with people in the 18-24 crowd than kids. However, since our guild generally ranges from 25-50+ yrs old we like to make sure guildies are people whom we can get along with at our level.

edit:

I should also say that in terms of a raiding schedule, school and parents have completely jacked us from time to time. So it's also to do with stability.

I'm sure there will be more family minded guilds that will have their own kids playing. Go to a place like aionsource and advertise for a guild.

I agree what others said, stay true. People who are older will know if you lie.

And remember, it's not really an insult or anything. to put it into perspective:

think about how much different you are in life experience and maturity than say someone who is 4 years younger than you.

You might have friends who are 9 and 10 but I doubt it as you are now in your teen years. Now imagine you being 14 and me being 42.

And think about somone who is 4 years the other way... 18. How different they are and how different their way of going about things is, how they are planning for college, probably moving out for the first time, etc.

Remember, it's ok to be 14 and to be around other 14 year olds. This is a good thing.

So find yourself a family minded guild and you should be ok.

I personally don't care how old you are, but how you act.  There are plenty of 20-30 year olds that act like they're 12 and you occasionally find a 12-year old that acts like he's 20-30.  You can't really say that someone is going to be immature simply based on their age.

However, guilds that have high on-line time requirements are probably going to trend toward adults, simply because being in the middle of a boss battle and having someone's mommy tell them they have to go to bed is annoying.  Adults have more control over their time, which for time-sinks in MMOs, makes the process a lot easier for everyone.

Just my take anyhow.

Well, I sort of agree, but though I've met mature kids I have never met a 12 year old that actually acts like a 20 - 30 year old. Read: I'm calling him up to hang out.

Granted there are all sorts of immature and damaged people at all adult ages but the weight of life experience that a 12 year old will have as compared to a 30 year old, a well adjusted 30 year old is immeasurable.

God you guys take this shit too serious.  It's a VIDEO GAME - let me say it one more time.  VIDEO GAME.

Hardcore modes or permanent death makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.

This thread segued into a conversation about human sociology and the challenges of being a young person seeking entry into an adult group. Helpful advice was offered to the original poster.

A group of people interacting with each other while playing a video game is still, essentially, a group of people interacting with each other. That they are playing a VIDEO GAME is of secondary concern in this context.

honestly i don't mind having a minor is the guild, as a guild leader i usually tell them that this is a mature guild and we expect you to act like one. I also have some strict regulations for being in guild. if he can't follow any of them then he is out.

my reasoning, if he can follow the rules so be it.

another solution is to simply not allow them on voice chat unless it is an important event. in which case we mute him. (unless he proves himself capable of not talking about his sister stealing his gameboy DS. Or that cool new power ranger movie.

although i would have to admit, that he would have a better game experience by playing with people his own age. if you are 13 years old and stuck playing a game with 25-35 year olds, it kind of gets boring to hear conversations about wives, work, and giant (censored).

I started playing MMOs a little younger then you (21 now), but all I did was act mature and help people not act like a little kid and take matters seriously and I had no problems finding guilds.  When I was in the guilds people were shocked when they found out I was that young.  So my best advice is take things easy and dont be yelling out in general channels about stupid things or yell and cuss people out and things will be fine.

People do not want a 'child' in their guild for the simple fact they start drama easy. So I say good luck.

On the same note, yes adults also cause drama but kids are easily insulted and get highly annoying.

I've certainly met younger people who acted maturely online and could handle themselves in any number of discussions.  I can't think of more than a handful of people I've ever met online in the past 20 years that I'd call up to hang out regardless of their age so that's not much of a consideration.  So long as they don't go oggling the female characters, going "ooh, look at the tits on that one!" and can spell, I'm pretty happy.

The whole "life-experience" thing isn't all that valid though, IMO.  We're online to play a game, not debate politics.  I can't really see where life experience means much when you're in a team of elves in armor beating up a boss.

Welcome to the world of TMMO’s (Teenage Massive Multiplayer Online) gentlemen, how long before we get a ten year old on here asking this question?

Teenage drama is the issue, posting on a forum does indicate a maturity above your demographic however, good luck.
