As to what happen to SWG. SOE changed the core game which made most of their player base quit. However, they have a new player, not as large as before but a player base none the less. If you've never played it you still may enjoy the game.
Part of the point of an mmorpg is to have things to do. The Dev's take that approach as to putting 5 raids in instead of 4 or 1000 quests in instead of 500. However the easiet content is to give us the tools and let us play how we wish. If we want to follow missions for a week great! If we want to go craft, or we want to go hang out in the nearest star bases bar and drink and play music, if we want to hang out on our ships and just go look at the newest space phenomenon for the sheer beauty of what designers can do with graphics these days nice! If we want to hang out on planets, or go up into space. Star Trek doesn't need to be a game nor a simulation but it does need to be a universer or I think it will fail. Quests and missions run out, raids done enough get boring. The tools to keep ourselves entertain she should be place and player ships is a part of that.
Im waiting on the game that gives us an 50/50 Sandbox with your traditional linear game. We ask for skills they continue to give us classes. We ask for sandbox, they continue to make the games Linear. It makes me wonder if they listen at all.

Well knowing Cryptic, and playing CoX for a while, they typically at least try to listen to the players, just on a timeframe that is beneficial to them. What you want, and what is concievable to do in any reasonable amount of time, are two totally different things. It takes a massive amount of time and resources to design a ship interior to scale like some of you are asking. I personally would like to just see the bridge, the captains cabin (make this section able to be decorated like housing in other games), the elevator door (which would take you and your away team down to the transporter room. (if you notice, these all branch from the bridge. The captains cabin is connected to the bridge and the elevator opens on the bridge. I think this would be a feasible thing to request IN TIME. Once they have the game mechanics and flow working fine, then come back and give all the ships a bridge. Making an entire Starfleet / Klingon ship interior would be quite a time consuming job for such a small part of a game. Of course I do not think this is a game breaker or will damage much immersion in the game. It is just a ship interior. |

Originally posted by Slambone Well, Star Wars Galaxies combines ground and space combat, with ship interiors to boot (though it's worth noting that there are only two or three true ship interiors in the entire game). Like you, I'd been pining for a game that competently combined both space and ground combat for years, and Star Wars Galaxies actually delivered on that.
I was so friggin' pleased at being able to walk around inside a ship, equip it with weapons and systems, jump to a waypoint and fight waves of enemy fighters, land it on planets, get out and shoot stuff with a laser pistol, then fly back home to sleep in my persistent, player-owned house....
But then NGE happened, and the rest is history.
HOWEVER!
What people have been failing to mention so far in this thread is that SWG's space combat and ship interiors weren't added until the first expansion, Jump to Lightspeed. That's exactly what Cryptic seems to be planning for Star Trek Online's interiors, folks!
I take a moderate view:
If STO never has ship interiors, I either won't play it at all or will stop playing it once it's clear interiors are vaporware. I think it is completely critical that STO has ship interiors, preferably in the first expansion.
However, although it sucks that the interiors won't be in for launch, I am still willing to give the game a try and Cryptic the benefit of the doubt, even though I'm also the sort of person who never trusts developers. (I won't even try it if it turns out to be a turd once it's released, of course. I will wait for first impressions and some reviews before buying, and naturally try to get into closed/open beta.) I think not having a bridge is what pissed people off the most. I could care less about seeing the mess, but being a captain and not being able to see my character in the captain's chair is a bit of a let down. If you don't want to play the game, don't bore everyone by stating as much. Just don't play and move on because nobody cares to hear a soapbox. |

True Ktanner. I think that at the very least the devs at Cryptic may want to consider a compromise and include a static bridge view at launch. Even if not many people would use it at least it would make some players happy until they could add more in depth interiors at a later time. Just my 2 cents on the issue.

I think Bren that is more or less the point. Most of us who want interiors will be satisfied with just a working bridge at first. Just something to put in the true ST feel. This is something that has been continuously ignored or past over by Devs for the last few years. I hope that Cryptic understands this critical issue. Otherwise they will ignoring a significant source of revinue for this game. |

I am sure Cryptic has plans to release this as a cash shop item down the road. No worries. |

Maybe their intent is to put ship interiors in the cash shop at a later date. Cryptic loves to micro charge, they did it often in City of Heroes with things like the wedding pack and costume packs. Have fun getting nickle and dimed to death with this company. |

OMG Nope the game isn't in Beta yet. So you don't know anything about if there is or isn't an interior of your Starship. Next post. …..it’s a guideline, not a rule, as players we must remember: “It’s a Game”. |

Sorry, but Cryptic did not have anything to do with the micro transactions being part of CoX. On November 6, 2007 NCSoft officially owned the IP to CoX and Cryptic stopped having anything to do with the game at that point. The first booster pack was offered for purchase on September 17, 2008. 11 months after Cryptic left the game. Bioware did not make Knights of the old Republic 2. |

Originally posted by onibocho Well, when I say 'static bridge view' I'm not really talking about a fully functional bridge. What I mean is something more along the lines of what was in Star Trek: 25th Anv. by Interplay. This would be fairly easy for them to put in the game at any point and would give people at least an interior viewpoint if they choose to use it for immersion mainly. It would also be really easy to replace with a more fully functional bridge at some later date.

Hi folks, i'm new the forum and i wanted to see what was to be said about STO, personally ship interiors are a MUST, or else it will be like eve-online combined with SWG, not a good combo in my oppinion [i love both games but they are two great tastes that dont taste great togeather] anyway i think ship interiors are a must-have in any startrek enviroment game, tv show or movie. not to be a crybaby and keeping in mind that things will most likley change if they dont have player ship interiors i'm not likley going to play. Played: WAR, WoW, EQII |

Yep! That would do too Bren. The fact that they decided to completely put it off just frustrates me. I certainly wont buy this at launch as presented so far at least not until I see a change or the promised expansion that includes at least that. |

This has been a big topic and it has been stated by Cryptic that Ship Interiors will be QUEST ONLY at launch for STO. This will however change later as full ship interiors for your personal ship are slated to be added in with a patch after game launch. So, officially, NO INTERIORS at launch for the game. (other then a few static ones used for quests) But, they will be added at a later date. So, they will be available eventually. Sucks to have a delay with this, but as the Devs said, they want to be able to give it to us when they can be customized. forums.startrekonline.com/showpost.php |

That is just my opion and we all know what THAT is good for! |
Cryptic did the same thing with Capes in CoH. They realized they could not get it in the game correctly with the proper effort and release the game on schedule. Once they did implement it, it was the best EVER.
So, if they say they want to wait and make sure it is done right, expect it to be top notch when it comes out into the game. Basically it is something they feel is an intigral part of the IP that does not need to hold up game developement. If they put it in later they can do a much better job than throwing in some hack.
More power to them for being honest about it and putting that up front. Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them. |
|
I dont know about you guys but if I had a say over ship interiors and beaming down to planets...I have to go with beaming down to planets. The theme of the game is to seek out new life and new civilizations...not go have a drink in ten forward....thats like making an MMO about the US Navy and instead of traveling around the world and doing stuff its all about going down to the galley for lunch |

So I'm glad that there is precedence on this as far as Cryptic is concerned. And I agree with the philosophy of if you can't do it right then wait until you can. We should be encouraging that kind of behavior from developers not discouraging it. If you don't want to play the game, don't bore everyone by stating as much. Just don't play and move on because nobody cares to hear a soapbox. |

you people are insane ok lets agree that interiors are a fun little thing too have ina game its part of the customazation but firstly remember this its just the interiors its not a big deal it wont make the game any worse....secondly what happens when you are walking around as a captain of your interior and then suddenly an attack happens, do you instantly teleport or do you have too run too get too the bridge what abouit if you are attacked and stuck in the engine (like always) room do you fight without a commander? |
|
Cerberus you are correct on the charge of insane. The likes of warrior have literally been crying about this topic since 2004. |

What's "insane" about having a preference that is different then you guys?? People are different and they find different things entertaining. Probably for the majority of the computing public (although not gamers or MMO players)..... social interaction is far more appealing then combat...period (Take a look at the popularity of chat-rooms)....and having ANY combat in the game wouldn't be important. For some people having interiors is NOT a big deal..... for others it's HUGE. Just because people have different preferences and different things that they would find entertaining doesn't make them insane or wrong.
Personaly, I like combat....but I really DON'T want to play the Captain of a Starship......I'd much rather play the Security Chief, or Engineering Chief or Chief Science officer. I also have no desire to Play a Klingon or any other Race/Faction but Fed.... they could strip that out of the game entirely and it wouldn't make any difference to me. Having interiors is ALOT higher priority for me then that. However, do I think the folks for who being able to play a Klingon or non-Fed race is a HUGE deal are insane or wrong because of thier preferences?.... No, they are just entertained by different things then I.
The bottom line is that different people find different things in games entertaining. Different people have different things they would be looking for in a Star Trek game. Cryptic has made a set of decisions about who they are trying to appeal to first..... nothing wrong about that. But it's just plain dumb to expect that some people won't be dissapointed by those choices..... or to pretend those people are WRONG some-how for having different entertainment preferences then the ones the game seems targeted at. |
