First off I want to say i really wanted to like this game.I really looked forward to the next great sandbox.I've been playing for almost a month.I waited years to play this game cause i was under the impression this was the next UO.i've discovered its anything but a game for hardcore PVP'ers. It doesn't cater to anyone else when it boils down to it.I was under the impression a Sandbox game could be played anyways you wanted to play it.I guess i was wrong there as well.

The first few minutes of logging in,decided to go hunt some goblins, ganked!i decided to go exploring,Ganked! Then hey lets do some harvesting, well you know. You get the picture.I paid fifty bucks to be ganked over and over again by other players who are for some reason so superior to me that it only takes them a few hits to kill me(NA1 has only been going for a month).

This game isn't a sandbox,i can't do things freely unless i am in some clan, and even then its not guaranteed. There is freedom but there isn't.I played UO and been in quite a few PVP scenarios but none where i am just constantly killed for trying to enjoy what seems like a huge limitless world.

The only mobs i can seem to kill are skeletons, zombies, goblins, trolls and anything other then that i know i am going to get killed.I understand that i shouldn't be able to solo certain mobs.Like giants, dragons, huge ogres and what not. Then again maybe my character isn't advanced enough to take on anything else other then the lowlies of the lowliest(after a month of playing).

Then again I will be honest maybe this game wasn't for me in the first place.I just didn't want to believe the bad reviews. To much emphasis on PVP.Over camped mob areas.Ten other players waiting for four goblins to spawn Is just ridiculous. The community seems like its filled with teenagers that just hit puberty, most of them anyways.Telling me i am a lamer cause i wish to play a game how i want to play it.

Okie people sorry to have trashed your game.I will go back to WOW ASAP and kill little cute bunnies, and i might even check out hello kitty online while i am at it :o) (sarcasm). Hope you all have fun.

Hey, not everyone can be good at FPS style play in an MMO. Its very different from the cookie-cutter target-click-keypress style in most MMOs.

Which is why DFO will always be a fringe game -- which is fine by me. I'm enjoying myself.

So you can take on 10 players by yourself when you are at half health and half stamina because your FPS skills are so much better than everyone else's?

Wow, you get the gold star for stupidity on that one. Nice job putting words in my mouth just to make a point.

I was merely pointing out that FPS style play is not for everyone. Go rage somewhere else.

Are you hacking? Reviews and videos suggest that is the correct way to play. Have fun stealing ships taking to the sky.

You made an inference that it was merely the FPS style that is his problem. As far as I could tell he didn't mention anything about the FPS. From my interpretation of the post it appears to me that the TC's problem arises because the PVP is a bit too open.

Something tells me the game isn't the problem here. I've never played DFO, so I'll use the closest experience I have. About a month after AoC came out, I subbed in, and started on a PvP server. Now as you may or may not know, that means that outside of Hubs there is FFA PvP. And as such, a player has to find a way of protecting himself. Whether you just happen to run into a couple guys that don't like your name, or maybe you just run into a guy who's a few more levels than you can handle, you need to find ways around it. You can't really expect to just walk off into the world without risk. Personally I hardly ever left stealth mode, even while in a group (I played a Barbarian). And the general rule for anyone who cannot stealth, is that you should always bring a buddy, if only as a ganker deterant.
I'm not trying to say that you're wrong in not liking the game, just that you seem to have misplaced some of your anger. I agree that having 10 guys waiting on 4 goblins is ridiculous, and that's one of the reasons I haven't played the game. I also agree that they should make the higher level mobs a tad easier, though I personally think that Giants and what not should be considered group content as well.

I did not infer that the FPS style is a problem. I said not everyone is good at FPS style gameplay. Big difference.

The OP was complaining that he kept getting ganked. In DFO, the difference between low/high skill, r0/r80 weapons isn't that great, meaning you should be able to survive against a higher level player if you engage in combat strategically. To do that, you need to be good at the FPS style of play, which is what DFO uses.

From what I've seen from new players, the minute they get attacked, they just stand there, looking around, trying to figure out who's hitting them. The second you get hit, you need to MOVE! Run, jump, make circles around your opponent, don't just stand there spreading your butt-cheeks. Most of the time, these gankers aren't very good and prey on people who aren't paying attention and if you turn and go at them, they'll run away. One of the things about DFO is that you can't tell how skilled someone is, but they can't tell how skilled you are either. That's one of the nice things about the game. Sometimes roaring like a lion is more effective than fighting.

DFO isn't for everybody. I'm not judging people for choosing a different style of gameplay. A lot of the time, however, people come into DFO with the idea that combat is somehow like all the other games they've been exposed to, and its simply not like that. I expect people to hate the game for that reason and that's OK.

I'm not so sure that's the case. Well, sure, for some people it might be, but there's a whole other subset of people seem to be discouraged by the game. In the course of it's looooooong development, Aventurine cited Ultima Online as the inspiration for the game. In UO, PvP was simply a feature among features. PKing was a real possibility, but there was so many things to do in the game that it wasn't much of a concern. With DFO, it seems the only source of enjoyment is all-out deathmatch against anything with a health bar.

I think people were expecting a UO-like game with a robust set of features to enjoy. So, when the reality ended up being that it was simply a gankfest, it sort of left a bad taste in customers' mouths.

The real crux here is that he wants to be able to solo in the game and experience everything.

You do get ganked, but it's not nearly as bad as people make out. That's just someone that got used to other games with safe areas. I think he'd learn to look around, even when you're fighting a goblin or harvesting.

Once you really start thinking about safety you learn little tricks like pulling to a more secluded area, turning while you're fighting so you can see if someone is moving your way, then the ganking is drastically reduced and becomes a part of the fun.

The solo thing is another issue. This is a game that's not made for solo PvE. PvE is barely a part for groups. You can run around ganking other people solo, I've seen one guy that regularly takes on two and three, but the game isn't set up for that.

You have to be very clever and determined to solo in Darkfall.

I love how those two argue over FPS issues bringing in technicalities, since this game is not a shooter thus not a FPS...

Any amount of research would have told you these things. Even the fans tell you that you must join a clan to have fun so that takes it out of the sandbox category there because you are pigoenholed into a playstyle vs being able to choose your own.

Oh, but DFO is, first and foremost, a FPS. Few would dispute that, I think. Just the frag mechanics are a little different.

@OP: Sadly, ganking is all about PVP games, nowadays. If there is a killable target around, people will engage, no matter what. This dilutes the game immersion and interaction with other people, and simply stimulate the "power in numbers" mentality (which is OK, but shouldn't be the only option around).

Games changes a lot since UO. Back then, there were gankers, of course, but they were a minority. PVP happened for a number of different reasons (control of access, resources, politics, sport, etc). Don't expect this to happen now that the genre became so popular.

The PVP game is a self-consuming beast, nowadays, and its own worst enemy.

I agree with what you've said here, and I would add that soloing, in some cases, is preferable.

For example,  not every clan has a city with all the resources to develop your skills, if they have a city at all. When you solo, you have the NPC cities to SAFELY craft  and gatther in. When you are in a clan, any clan that is at war with your clan can gank you in a city without any retaliation at all from the towers.  In a clan there are, in theory, no safe areas, even in your own clan city, if it's not well protected. That can be a problem for new players that join a guild right away. For this reason, staying solo is preferable until you get your crafting skills to a decent level.

OP you must have not read the instruction book.  First you need to either setup a macro or get a G-15 logitech keyboard, then join a clan and afk at the bloodwall all night for a week straight to be even close to competitive.

You can find an article detailing this garbage on Darkfall's frontpage.

I think the op is making a valid point that you are missing, this game was advertised as a "sandbox" and as it is designed it is nothing more than a full loot pvp bonanza which really is the fault of the devs as there is no other mechanic in game to keep people from ganking,  by the actions of most that is the most fun thing to do we all know that mobs are scarce in game as he pointed out with his example of the ten guys waiting on four goblins in a spawn there is no lore there is nothing to do here but gank or be ganked and as the op stated that is no more "sandbox" than a theme park is.

Casting magic and using a bow are both shooting actions, ergo, Darkfall has aspects of a First Person SHOOTER. It also has a first-person style of view, except for when using melee weapons, but that wasn't the point of my arguement and nerd-rage. I was making a point that CFurlin was drawing a conclusion that that was the OP's problem. From the way I read it, it seemed to me that the OP felt the PVP mechanics made Darkfall too restrictive of an environment.

Yes, yes. That particular bit of irony wasn't lost on me when I wrote it, but I stand by my phrasing because at least the OP says "to much emphasis on PVP" (Paragraph 5 Line 2) in his post and also: "i've discovered its anything but a game for hardcore PVP'ers. It doesn't cater to anyone else when it boils down to it.I was under the impression a Sandbox game could be played anyways you wanted to play it.I guess i was wrong there as well." (P1 L3-5). Whereas the control system wasn't even mentioned. So yes, I did make an inference into the OP's complaint against darkfall, but I can also quote from the post to back up my reasoning.

You used the part where the OP was getting ganked by other players to back up your claim about FPS, however FPS/Twitch skills don't make you hit harder, they just allow you to connect and avoid more (Caveat: Headshots in some games and backshots in this one as far as I remember, though the opt mentioned neither). What the OP was referenceing was the different in stat skill levels. The phrasing: "for some reason so superior to me that it only takes them a few hits to kill me(NA1 has only been going for a month)" strongly suggests that this is a reference to stats and not twitch (P2 L3,4).

Sandbox means that the devs create a world that let's the players decide what to do. Players decide what political alliances to develop, what skills and type of character you want and what equipment to build. This is almost the definition of a sandbox.

DF just barely guides you in your first hour, just "here's how the controls work," and kick you out the door.

This sandbox just happens to be full of bullies that enjoy trying to kill new players, and lacking some of the tools to build the way you'd want.

It definitely sounds like the OP should be looking for another MMO to play! Darkfall is *hardcore* (Many people here deny this because they think that by being labelled 'hardcore', the game is worthy of praise.... which is a big no-no on MMORPG.com) and truely is dog-eat-dog. Solo-play is extremely difficult and requires a massive amount of patience (I actually enjoy solo'ing alot of the time - it's like playing the game on nightmare mode where any successful trip feels genuinely rewarding). Anyway, find a large clan that caters for newbies and go hunting in your own PK squad. You'll have a hell of alot of fun!
