Useless skill to have really considering I haven't heard of a game company paying for beta testers in a good while. Was nice to get paid a few times, but alas seems developers don't mind cutting that corner when they can generally get people to pay to beta test now days lol. I actually have a checklist of common things to test out when I first get into a beta. After that it's time to start breaking down mechanics and seeing how they can be exploited. Then it's on to find unique issues if I can. After that I try and play through as much as I can of the game to see if there's anything that pops up in normal play. Then it's on to see how much I can do with the client. I even have comps dedicated to beta's. Some Nividia, some ATI, some high end, some low end and some mid ranged. Have 8 all together oO.

Why do I do all this? Well........ it's one of my preffered methods of entertainment. Most games I have more fun beta testing than playing lol.

This is a sad sad tale of a beta junky. Kids, don't become a beta junky.

Well, you have us if you need an intervention :-p.

That's awesome to see... You're exactly the kind of person MMOs need more of for their beta phases, but sadly don't get enough of it seems. I know there *are* those who really test and report in beta... but so many see it only as a "free trial" and, to really prove they have no idea what a beta is, judge the game as a final product... bashing it for the bugs they find but never reporting them. /facepalm

Anyway... Far be it from me to condone an addiction... but I hope you get into beta, Ghost :)

yes.joining beta give u and others a chance to make your voice heard if u have any feedback during testing.not just bugs but anything u feel the game should add or remove or changed.

i doubt there will be a lot of bugs in ffxiv.most likely typos and stuff and balancing class issue though.more like they will use beta to work on any features that need to be enhanced or fail to deliver.so feedback is important.

i just hope they provide a easy to access platform for reporting feedback or bugs.best will be to have a report inbox inside game :)

Those who approach MMOs as "being competitive games" and need to be ahead of everyone else, or "first" in everything, certainly do. But those who just like to enjoy the journey dont' necessarily feel that way.

Too weird to live, and too rare to die

I do not plan on being in Final Fantasy XIV's beta simply because none of the information I have been presented with has evoked any interest in me for the game. The job system, the environment, the lore, all of it is a turn-off for me. However, I can see why a lot of other people are excited.

I will be playing Aion until something better comes along, which will likely be quite some time since Star Wars: The Old Republic looks terrible. I am basically putting all my faith in Curt Schilling's Copernicus project at this point - it may bring back some old-school fantasy MMORPG joy, but information is too scant at this point to comment on it.

And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.

I hope I can get into it. I like to pre-order games, that I am interested in, for the extra goodies they tend to include in the package. Rare in game item exclusive to the pre-order for example. Access to betas are usually included in these types of orders, so that's just an added bonus for people like me. As some may know, I've mentioned quite a few times that FF11 was my first mmo, so needless to say, I'm all aboard the 14 train. Got the website bookmarked, read every inch of every page of the website, and plan to start my own religion. I only need 3 other nerds er followers to make it legal.

I am just impatient really. When there's something I see and want, I want to get it right then. I don't care about being first though, mostly since it's not even traditionally level based, as well as FF has been a very story driven series of games. I want to sit back and watch the cutscenes, take screenshots of the scenary, and just enjoy the community as I did when 11 launched. The one thing I want more than anything is to be able to find my old friends on the Asura server and remake our old guild again, with upgraded graphical versions of the characters we made 5-6 years ago. I'll have to pay for a month subscription to ff11 again and try to get in contact with however many of my old friends as I can. One I know still plays lol, he's like a 75 in everything, and has kept in touch with quite a few people, so I should be golden there. Basically for me, what it boils down to, is for nastolgic purposes. To relive what I did with old friends, and faces, in an entirely new world. And the sooner I can get in that world, the better.

On a side note, thinking more on betas, they do tend to give interested players a chance to test the tires so to speak. Get a key in a giveaway, or spend $5 at a gamestop or whever and get into the beta that way, see if the game has enough potential to buy and subscribe, and either do when the game launches, or cancel the pre-order if it's not what you were expecting and get your $5 returned. There's another good reason to get into the betas of games you're interested in.

I would participate in the beta if given the opportunity but I'm not dying to get in. Personally I think the pre-order/paid betas are kind of tacky so I hope they don't choose to go with that so if I get in it will be luck of the draw probably.

Well... I don't know about "brilliant"... lol, but thanks :).

I'm just observant, and happen to fall into the "enjoy the journey" category.

This is gold. While I'm sure a good number of posters would like to be betas most of them are inspired by more selfish and less selfless reasons. But Ghosty sounds pro. I'd love for that guy to get into beta.

I myself have four laptops; only one of which was built specifically for gaming which is my Dell XPS 1530, one backdated IBM, one shelf-bought HP, and a Japanese Macbook Pro - plus a custom desktop gaming PC and of course my PS3.

Wow. I planned on building another computer, but I didn't realize I already had that many machines... I might just resell.

But it's no use beta testing if your computer can't hack it. We're likely to need upgrades if our systems were bought any time this year unless it's comprised of the best of the best video cards and processors, which are still quite expensive right now.

I'm not sure if I feel like dropping 5G's on a powerhouse behemoth. Until I make up my mind my PLAYSTATION 3 should suffice. Has anyone hacked their PS3's OS? I've read about it, using linux or w/e, but what's the point in turning your console into a PC?

Undefeatability lies within ourselves. Defeatability lies with the enemy.

I'm not a tech savvy person, but from I've heard, it's very difficult to currently hack the PS3. Another problem comes with the game updates as well as the system updates. So even if you hacked your PS3, the game updates are another problem to have to deal with.  Not to mention that if you fail that you just put $400 down the crapper.

Honestly, I like it that no one is really able to mod or hack the PS3 (yet). When I play Nazi Zombies on my PS3 online, I have alot of fun. Now, I have a friend that has an Xbox 360, and laughed at me for quite a while at the fact that the Xbox 360 has 4 player offline nazi zombie co-op, and he can bring a guest online with him. But, then we played online, and, well, I don't remember hyper speed zombies that break windows down quickly being the original design...

One last thing: To be honest, I think the reason why SE set so many high tech requirements to play FF XIV on a computer was to encourage people to play it on the PS3. Why spend hundreds or even a thousand of dollars to get another new computer (or upgrade it) when you could play it on your PS3 or buy it for less than what it would cost you to upgrade/buy new computer?

No.... so I went and did it, re-subbed back to FFXI.... I only have the desire to keep playing a Taru/"Lalafell" (always played Tarus in FFXI), so bascially if they keep the creepy little pod-children Haley Joel Osment lookalike "Lalafells" I won't likely be playing FFXIV... which I don't think they'll change it. Yes I dispise the new look that much.

Ohh well... I read the game will have insta teleportation to a lot of areas anyway.

I completely agree with the OP's view.

I would love to be part of the beta and contribute to making the game polished. But at the same time I really want to see the game for the first time the same way I saw FFXI for the first time. With little noobs running all around and seeing a lv 20 on a chocobo and being like OMG!! HES SO GOOD! and all that kind of stuff. Was amazing.

I'm glad to see this topic posted! I have felt pretty much exactly the same way. Part of my reason NOT to be in the beta is also because I don't want to see my character get deleted once it's over. In the FFXI beta I participated it, I played a Tarutaru and made new friends while learning the game etc. The beta then came to a close and I never did see those friends again. If they could save your character from the beta and transfer it over to the finalized retail version that'd be cool, but I really wouldn't want that either. It ruins the atmosphere, kind of like how when NA got the FFXI release for the first time, Japan had already been playing it for a period of time already.

There are three kinds of people in this world. The one's who can count, and the ones who can't.
