Well, part of the problem is developers promising the world and delivering a rock. I became aware of DF about 3 years ago through another RPG forum. Reading the details got me all excited. I thought "Finally! Someone gets it!" Now that DF is out, the reality is that they only got part of it. Of course, they COULD be working on the mother of all patches to try to bring the reality back in line with the design specs as originally published, but the damage is already done. The game is nothing but a MMOFPS with swords catering to retards. I guess the good thing is that as long as they're running around in there flinging shit at eachother, maybe their numbers will thin in other games. Who knows?
EDIT: Just to add, I agree with your last line, there. Perhaps Aventurine is doing Star Vault a favor by saying "See, this is how NOT to hype/release/maintain a game." I just wish they'd put the hammer down on the MO community. I lurked for a year before joining up, and in that time, I can see how it's slipping into ForumFail part 2.
Dont you mean another expansion? I'm pretty sure the "next" big patch they come up with will be called another expansion. |

Nope, sorry...wrong again. Darkfall has had generally poor reviews ( along with rejection by the majority that have tried it ) due to its numerous failings, not because it didn't replicate WOW.

You're right, the genre should just push out more un-polished buggy turds instead of a finished product. You're a real genius, aren't you? I do like how innovation these days is considering making a "Clone" (putting it in quotes because I hate the term) of UO. Fucking brilliant that copying a 10 year old game is now considered innovation. BRB guys, I'm remaking doom and you bet your ass it'll be the most innovative shit on the market :).

Free for all PvP isn't the problem. It's the total lack of anything else. Aventurine cited UO as an influence, and FFA PvP was just a part of UO. DF is nothing but. I wouldn't have a problem with it if it had a healthy crafting setup, or an economic game to it. Or roleplaying elements. Or anything else other than GOGOGO GET TO DA CHOPPAH! gameplay. Oh yes, I hate DF. I've never played it, but I don't have to. The amount of good vs. bad stuff I read is overwhelmingly lopsided to the bad. I'm not going to waste time or money on the chance that it won't suck, when I've read quite enough from a variety of sources. But like I said, if they patch it up (or release more expansions (lol, csthao)) and round out the other features that should have been there in the first place, I might reconsider. I like the fantasy world simulation aspect of a RPG. It takes me out of real life for the time I play and gives me a chance to experience stuff that real life won't allow. If I wanted the Darkfall experience, I'd just go take my white ass over to South Central LA wearing a brand new pair of Nikes and see how long it takes before I get ganked. After all, killing people and taking their stuff is all DF is about. "You'll never win an argument with an idiot because he is too stupid to recognize his own defeat." ~Anonymous |

Darkfall features (and focuses on) the worst sort of FFA PvP, and my attitude towards FFA PvP has always been that it's ridiculous. Total anarchy leads to a population of illiterate bullies, a garbage community and a dwindling player base. There's a reason why no noteworthy MMORPG to date features true FFA PvP, or if it does (see: UO and EVE), it's not a main feature (there are many other deep activities to engage in) and there are still sensible limitations in place.
Real life has FFA PvP. Technically, you can headbutt your sister in the face, push a washing machine down a flight of stairs onto an old lady, or walk into a Dunkin Donuts and start blowing people away. There's nothing physically preventing you.
What stops you is your conscience (if you have one), because it's real life and not a game, and (most importantly) the fact that there are dire, long-term consequences for that sort of behavior. Spending 60 years in the slammer with Bubba McBumrape is enough to discourage a lot of people where conscience fails them.
But look, I'm not saying we should have morality and pacificm in MMORPGs, just the consequences part. FFA PvP without any significant system of consequences is stupid. The consequences of "when you lose, the winner takes your stuff" or "dude you ganked might call his friends and they might get you unless you log for a while" aren't nearly enough, and are the wrong sort of consequences in any case.
EVE Online is the only game with conditional FFA PvP that's gotten it mostly right. Everything else is just annoying, unrealistic and seems to encourage shit communities. Retired From: FFXI, AO, SWG, EVE, Ryzom, GW, WoW, WAR |

You've never played the game but you know everything. So why post here? The game is great if you're one of the people that want that kind of game. It's just not for you apparently. There's boats, and they're very cool if you can get one, there's player owned cities, there's a lot of politics in the world. It's a lot more than just getting killed in the newbie area. I quit, it wasn't perfect for me either, but it wasn't the awful game that people try to make it out as. If my friends played DF I'd be there and happy with it still. It's got some problems, but it's a pretty good game, and it's growing again. Every guild I was friendly with is getting new recruits. I think it might be like Eve and grow into it's own niche. If you can find enjoyment in the game for anything other then the occasional real pvp and sieging, I would like to know what that would be. There is a reason why so many have taken the bloodwall macro route, afk macroing and exploiting the higher end mobs for cash to fund their magic macroing. It is because regular play is the biggest bore I've yet to see in any mmorpg, and is not rewarding for the time and effort put into it. Not to mention, it is the ganker that gets all the rewards, the ganker is DFs baby and indulged to in every way possible. The game world is almost empty, with folks hiding in packs behind the safety of their alliance city walls.

I think its great the OP found a game he likes and I'd like to see him come back a month from now and post how he feels then. |

if you actually try *reading* those reviews, you'll notice that their main complaints are essentially that the game systems do not replicate those of current WOW-clone MMOs. which was my point.
FYI, DF's review scores so far have been: 2/10 (Eurogamer, widely reported as being full of gameplay errors and reviewer exposed as having played for only 2.5 hours). 4/10 (Eurogamer essentially admitting first review was faked and re-review scored low to try to save face), 7.4/10 (nowgamer), 7/10 (meristation), 83/100 (gameobserver), 6/10 (mmorpg.com). IOW, widely split, again because DF is a "love it or hate it" kind of game, largely because it actually tries to depart from the generic WOW-clone formula.

Cleaned up this thread a little bit. I would like to keep this thread open for further discussion, so please try to stay on topic. We have a new comer that enjoys Darkfall so far. It isn't a hard topic to follow. Thanks! MMORPG.com Staff Derek Gordon |
