For me it was EQ. What the EQ community illustrated was a group of people that were dedicated to the game, for the sake of gamesmanship. In my opinion the best way to gauge this is by the 'quality' of information. EQ had quite a few dedicated sites for Maps, Trade Skills, Classes and Quest related information. Some of those sites still exist and sadly quite a few of them have long disappeared (or have not been updated). There are a few fledgling sites that are new and have updated/current game information.

Making a call on which is worst is a little to subjective, suffices to say I go by the quality of information. Some sites have players that are willing to give good information concerning the game, however a lot of it is inter mixed with the sea of critics and cynics.

WOW.. and no Im not a WOW hater or something like that... lots of that i hate there... angry kids, no answers to me questions allways 1337 and on forum every post someone write noob, idiot lamer.... etc...

nice people, ppl healping each other, devplorers and mods allvais there and i talk whit them almost every day about game, future addons etc..

Best: Eve Online. Very helpful and friendly community(obviously not friendly when if you go to unprotected systems) and the learning curve gets rid of undecired types :) Sure there's people bitching like children when they die, but it's definately not worse than any other game and pretty good considering it's a pvp game.

Worst: I used to have this spot for WoW, but Darkfall wins it by a miles now. It's really really really bad. PvP is more smacktalk than pvp and the number of mechanics that can be abused has lured a lot of idiots in. Noobs are slaughtered and abused just because people can, protective systems are highly flawed and tend to protect pk'ers. Harassment is almost a daily occurence inside cities.

Best:  EQ2 (Lucan D'Lere server - turn off 1-9 chat!),  Istaria (although I didn't play for long, the community was pretty amazing), and DAOC (Gaheris server)

Worst:  WoW, SWG (but I still enjoyed them both for a short while)

I noticed during beta and when the game went live that there wasn't a lot of game chatter in War, I attribute that to the communication system in War where you could only talk to people within a certain range. I suppose I could be part of that none talking community as our Guild pretty much just grouped with each other and most of our conversation was on Vent and or between each other in Guild/Group Chat.

The best community in my experience of MMORPGing was.

Everquest, Anarchy Online and Star Wars Galaxies (between the years of 2001 to 2005)

The worst community in my experience of MMORPGing was.

World of Warcraft from 2005 to present, however what do you expect a game that caters to 6 year olds and up. 

Ragnarok Online (closed/open beta) community was one of the best I've been part of - also FFXI.

Best: Asheron's Call 1's PvE community

Worst: Asheron's Call 1 PvP community

I loved the game.  The PvP was magnificent, and the people I met were great.  Those who were more interested in the PvE side of the game were some of the most helpful people I have ever met in an MMO.  They really made you feel like part of a family.  The same is true about some of the PvPers I met.  I had some great times PvPing, and had some great friends there too.  But in the same aspect of the game, I met some of the most horrific people ever.  People who would make you cringe just from the crap they said.

So, it was a double edged sword.  It had aspects of the best community I've ever seen, and the worst, all rolled into one.

Best Community is easily FFXI Great people on that game.

Worst Community WoW no doubt.

Best:  Star Wars Galaxies, a long time ago in a land far far away when SWG first came out it was rather wonderful.

Worst:  Eve Online, sure there are some polite people around but they seem to be the exception to the rule.  Never seen a game where it seems to be encouraged to be the biggest a$$ you can be.

You aren't kidding about EVE. its a bitch to find decent people. If you need a laugh, listen in to the public 'CEO' channel. THere are a handful of nerds in there who actually think they are badasses lol its like a biker bar for nerds. pathetic! lol

Favorite Community: FFXI - the game requires grouping, and jerks quickly run out of people who will group with them.

Worst Community - I will NOT say EVE. Dispite what i said up top, there are good people in the game. WoW, is loaded with a massive amount of morons. Even the game mechanics rewards anti-socialism. When you finally have to group...its like forcing a bunch of loaners to work together.

I think the people posting Darkfall are confusing the game with Forumfall...WIth that said:

Best I would say is probably FFXI, pratically everything in that game is socializing with other people. Second best would be EQ2. Worst would be WoW.

The best community I was a part of is CoH...hands down the most helpful, outgoing, non-snooty, and fun living group I've ever gamed with.

The worst community had to be WAR.  In my entire two month stay, nobody said word one.

Best - LOTRO it was by far the best community. Ranging from attitude to community events.  Everyone is very helpful, and yes you still had people that were just rude.

Worst - WOW You have great people and asshats. Unfortunally asshats were > nice people. No one had patience or would help anyone unless it benefited them 100% Thier attitudes are the same likeon these forums. Someone else said this and I aggree 100%

Ill jump on the "cool kids" bandwagon and say WoW has the worse community because you know I've played on all 200 or so of my region servers... no sorry I've played 3 of em but thats enough to lable all players right? and every 1 shouts out "chuck norris" jokes... oh wait sorry that stopped in 2005... every one ninja loots... oh wait wait I tell a lie from my own 4 year experience I have never been a group with some one ninja looting... every one is 8 years old... oh wait somtimes I play up to the early hours around 2-3am and the servers are still packed.

In all seriousness I didin't need to open this thread to know WoW would labeled as the worst... price it pays for being the most played MMO I guess.  Your all entitled to your opinons but for me WoW is just fine community wise, not too serious and can have a bit of fun.

WORST: Ultima Online - Why: From bank sitters creating lag to the a$$holes who stabbed everyone else in their backs, birthplace of scammers, hackers, exploiters, bullsh!ters and every other worthless scum on the face of this planet, Good Rithens UO.

BEST: Star Wars Galaxies - Why: On SWG first intial launch the community was great, easy to make friends and group with, most helpful, first two months of launch PvP was the most fun until the hacks and exploits came out overall still a blast

just spent 20 minutes googling that server and reading up on it.  I stopped once i got to the 50yr old pedophile who multiboxes and hires prostitutes....

 I remember that guy. He had six boxes IIRC so he could have a full group without anyone else. He used to talk on the forums about hiring (adult female) prostitutes. You must have decided to add that pedo bit in yourself... which implies your comment was intended as a kind of indirect flame... which implies you spent 20 minutes of your life looking for some material for a pathetic little indirect flame... and came up with that.

Best:  toss up between Ryzom and Lotro.   Ryzom was just filled with helpful people.

Ryzom's that game where one of the races looks like little kids isn't it?

Lotro because people seemed so nice and welcoming...and every guild i have been in (4 so far) have been the friendliest guilds i have come across in any game.

Four guilds huh - were they all friendly enough to help you out with lots of gear before you quit for the next one?

 

actually i stumbled across a charge laid against him for having sex with an underage girl.  It was posted on some site filled with Zek fanboi's (quite a scary place).

Guilds wise:  1st one i left because i left the game (many moons ago, for AoC).  2nd one fell apart after the leaders left the game.  3rd one i was on a trial account at the time and was just looking for some company.  4th one (current one) is full of awesome people.

Best early EQ and early DAoC, in both these games at least early on there was a since of comradarie amongst the community that I havnt seen in a game since, LotRO gets an honorable mention.

Worst it has to be between WoW and AoC, which is a complete shame becuase as games both are pretty darnned good IMO.

I tried WoW again just last year and people were still doing the same old bullshit with the Chuck Norris jokes and the even more nauseating "add murloc into the movie topic" thing.  As for ninjalooting it was still around but no matter which game you play you're going to run across those types of greedy bastards.

As for worst community, I'll have to agree with you on Warhammer.  While I did enjoy the PvP aspect of the game from a gameplay standpoint until T4 the amount of assholes you could encounter especially in scenarios was mindboggling at times.  You really have to wonder at times if people were that miserable or unhappy with others they were playing with why the hell they were still around.  Of course, there were times you would run across some really cool people and have a great time but the negativity of some-amazingly at times even in scenarios you were winning was just astounding to me.  Outside of scenarios or RVR chat was dead too.  At least as annoying as the likes of WoW can be  t times there are people active-saying something at least for god's sake.

As for best community: EQ for me, never seen one as helpful and friendly as that one although LotR does come close.

  BEST : City of Heroes/Villains

    Why?  It just is.  Trial the game, and learn.

  WORST:  Silkroad.

  Probably because it didn't exist, due to all the botting and PKing

Worst : War, FF XI

The best community I have seen in my gaming history would have to be CoH/CoV. Everyone was very helpful when I first started. Did plenty of missions with some of the nicest and most intelligent people I have seen. Not to mention how abundant it has been.

The worst was definitly WoW. PUGs were awful, market economy was inflated, and nobody was truly experienced. The most annoying of the memories was the overflow of cheap, moronic jokes in General/Trade chat. E.X. Chuck Norris jokes, Harry Potter and the <link conspicuous item here>, and the infamous anal <link spell name here>. 

Best Community: Everquest - Why? Because they had good players, it was about a team effort

Worst Community: WoW - Why? Because like the OP said, its about the me me mentallity and they the people that should of never played mmos to begin with.
