For me the biggest blunder of mmorpg marketing will always be TOR.

Seriously, anouncing KOTOR mmorpg and then sarcastically stating that "they won't be making KOTOR III because TOR will be III, IV and all parts you would ever need"....

That made sure that I won't be playing TOR anytime soon.

I would say the PR nightmares of Dark and Light and on a bigger scale; Vanguard deserve mention.  Vanguard's story of how it flopped is far more interesting than the game itself was.

Strange that the biggest blunder is not listed *trumpet*

"Dark and Light"  !!!

This has set very high standards on how to lie to  and disinform a whole comunity to build up a tremendous hoax, supported by angry fanbois until it's final death.

Warhammer has got to hold the record for going from the coolest game ever to a super imbalanced POS.

What in the world did they do with all the dev time they had?

Why won't that graphics engine run for crap on killer rigs?

I enjoyed the first 2 or 3 months of WAR more than almost any other game I have ever played.

Then, I made it to t4 where there is nothing but lag fests and the class imbalances become very, very clear.

Great Article as usual John !

I gotta add to the Warhammer posts here. But as we are speaking about blunders, I guess the biggest one was when the creative director, Paul Barnet, said in an interview for gametrailers, that WoW was like the Beatles "you can´t beat the Beatles, but we are Led Zeppeling, we are stronger, cooler, and more hardcore". And if you look at it, in comparision, WAR´s PVE is crap compared to WoW, where "RvR" wasn´t really even present in WoW by the time. So I would say WAR failed not only because the game is not ready and polished to a minimum till this day, but also for making this stupid comparision, WAR is a completely different game, but never used that in their favor.

Also this my get me into trouble, but imho Fucom had/have this great game that is Anarchy-Online, and they have been promising a new Graphics Engine for it for years now, and I cannot star to imagine what where they thinking of making a Conan MMO, I mean, where is the sense in being in the Conan world, if you´re not conan :/, it was a HUUUGE mistake to go for another game, and I honestly don´t see why a company would develop more than one MMO at all.

Amazing how the Funcom haters come outta the woodwork at times.

AoC is far from being a "blunder", if you want that just ask a SWG player about the NGE.  AoC suffered from overhype, people were upset that guild cities weren't ingame ready to use from the start.  Didn't matter that  YOU the player have to build it, they wanted a silly WoW-ish cap a flag to cap a keep I guess.  Also the lack of an auto-attack I think frustrated and turned off some people who were used to more simplistic combat (yes I'm talking about WoW).

Funcom isn't perfect, not by any means.  However, AoC had a fairly smooth launch (no crashes).  The new rating system isn't nearly as drastic as SWG's NGE was, I liken it more to how WoW went to a rating system when BC was released.

SOE ranks high with me for blunders when it came to customer service (or rather lack there of).  Quite frankly, many of their service reps seem to act like they just don't give a s**t if you play their games or not.

I think World of Warcraft has one of the biggest blunders in recent times is when Blizzard made the item Scepter of Celebras to open Maraudon back door an item. what they didnt realise was that you could sell this item and thus you could get some gold for it. Me and my guild mate found an exploit that if you had some nice repair bot and go to Celebras the Redeemed use your repair bot and sell the item talk to Celebras the Redeemed and he will give you another one my mates got over 5000g in about 45 mins. Then some noob opened thier mouth and told Blizzard and the immidiatly shut the server down (this was on a saturday night from 1am till about 7am) im sure alot of people was unhappy and didnt have a clue what happened but GUESS what blizz we did ^^ also the 3 people involved got sever punishment 1 got banned for life and the other 2 accounts got suspended.

At the end of the day blizzard should think about what they are doing in the game and not ban people for using an exploit that they have created :) just because we was clever enough to outsmart blizz this time they got annoyed i guess. but it was all fun.

Also please dont waste your time and try to do it they hotfixed it and now the item is unsellable.

this is not about blunders it is about cheaters like you exploiting the game to get an unfair advantage.

at least blizzard did the right thing and kicked you cheaters sierously in the butt(s)!

It wasnt our fault that blizzard are thick enough to leave it in the game and any1 would do it. just think how much gold the gold farmers got from it. how nice for them. also 1 person getting banned isnt really a punishment as he was a new char anyway :D

Just as Duke Nukem Forever has come to be synonmous with Vaporware, the NGE is the ultimate MMO screw-up. It doesn't really matter what mistakes other developers will make, this one will be the one remembered.

The true horror of the NGE is deeper then the NGE itself. SWG was a unique game created in a different age before the dawn of WoW and the asian free-to-play MMO's.

It was DIFFERENT. The sandbox-model is often mentioned but people brought up on EQ-clones like WoW or Lotro (or indeed EQ itself) don't really understand the difference. If I play in Lotro, I know EXACTLY what skills a captain will have. There are only a 5 or so skills that you actually have to choose between (legendary skills) and those are either useless or the difference doesn't matter.

This was not the case in SWG. More or less, you had no idea what someone else could do. Were you dealing with a sniper expert or a sword-fighter? Did they mix in doctor skills or were they a scout? While many a SWG player min-maxed their values, this was not the core of the players. The people that miss the original SWG are the ones who played characters they liked to play. Even after the doc buff, my character didn't wear armour, trading the protection for extra regen. It worked but wasn't considered optimal, but amoung the lovers of SWG this didn't matter. It was about playing who you wanted to play.

For the group content, my own group never worried about stats of a player, you want to come, then it was up to everyone else to adjust to whatever skills you brought along. Yes we did the death watch bunker with politicians and image designers.

SWG was a game where people played without ever firing a shot. It is the difference between the modding comunity of Countrerstrike vs The Sims.

And Sony ruined that. They turned a game that was open and attracted players more intrested in RPG then XP and loot into a WoW-clone and a bad one at that. It wasn't just the NGE. It was the doc-buff that ruined group play. The CU was a disaster and the NGE just put the final nail in the coffin.

When you still see people ranting about SWG it is NOT just because of the NGE. It is because with the death of the original SWG the sandbox MMO died. All we get now is more and more solo-mode xp/loot grinding spreadsheets.

When you compare a recent MMO like AoC to SWG then the lack of depth and even basic fun in AoC is mind boggling. AoC is just an endless hack&slash, there is no character building, no community, no sense of uniqueness.

The result of the NGE was not that companies learned not to drastically alter their game, in the post NGE world, all we get is the same old games with a new skin.

Maybe SWTOR or TSW will be different, but the more I see of them, the more I fear these games will just be another Vanguard or AoC. Games that both struggle technically but ultimately fail because they ain't WoW enough to beat WoW and don't appeal to those games who want something different then yet another WoW-clone.

I HATE  SOE!!

I was playing SWG since launch and became a Jedi after MASSIVE  Force grind. Everything about that game was great. I mean you could be part smuggler part creature handler part medic, the possibilities were endless. i have never found a game better, and i have tried a lot.

Am I the only one who realized that the author had an EPIC FAIL with #1?

Since when is 15 November 2005 "recent"?

FAIL.

I am annoyed at some of the MMORPG.com writers. They obviously let grudges, opinion, and bias pervert what otherwise might have been a good article. I saw the first few and thought, "Okay, I dont care about those two, next page! Hmm, that's okay. Okay cool, the #1 should be good then." Only to think "Wow, what is THAT doing in it? RECENT?"

I am only a few more articles away from never reading from mmorpg.com again.

2005 is not RECENT.

There is no excuse for this. The article should have said "Five MMO Blunders" or "Top Five Popular MMO Blunders of All Time."

That way, I wouldn't have had to waist 4 minutes reading this worthless drivel and could have rolled over to the next poorly written article.

MMORPG.com is becoming the MMO version of AOL news.

SOE allowing Silius, Salim Grant, to be the lead developer of Vanguard: Saga of Heros. Major blunder!

#1 on this list has been around for a LONG LONG time.

A year or so after playing Rappelz, the Developers totally revamped the skills of ALL Characters and Pets which ruined the game play totally for me.

Then to add insult to injury they then introduced the "Death Timer" (as I call it) to supposely punish the PVP grievers. It did NOTHING to fix the MAJOR problem of dealing with level 70+ characters (usually level 100+ players) killing characters that had just exited from Newbie Island. Then one of their GM's / Forum moderators that supposedly had major input to the developers asked if the community that played the game liked or hated the change with the promise to revert the game back to NOT having the 30 second logout timer. Over 75% of the community told them that it was a very bad idea... then the GM stated in no uncertain terms that they were NOT going to undo the Logout timer. Strange behaviour by their GM flat out LYING to the community in their OPEN Forums.

Rappelz has a bad set of code when it comes to logging in too... If you get disconnected for ANY reason or the Server Crashes, etc... you are spawned BEFORE you can even see your character in the game. This USUALLY means that your character is DEAD before you can even enter the game if your character is deep inside a dungeon anywhere. This isn't all that hard to FIX... 9 Dragons ONLINE loads your character LAST then gives you a small invulnerability window to start moving.

Rappelz Developers started a VERY VERY bad trend too... they started selling cash item SHIT to fix bugs that they just introduced INSTEAD of reverting back to the previous version of their source code that didn't have the NEWLY introduced bug.

Bottom Line, Rappelz is totally unplayable for me... So I gave away ALL my items before deleting the game client. My Level 70+ archer was very playable until the total screwup of ALL skills.

As for me, ANY "Gtater" (yes, I know it is G Potato) games most likely won't see play time at all on my PC.

Haven't read the flurry of responses. - I saw the title of the article, and in my head said "#1 has GOT to be SWG" ... so I skipped thru all of it and was SO gratified to read NGE as #1. Thank You. And your summation of the issue was pretty good, it's def been talked to death, and the bottom line is: it's not coming back, and it will be forever remembered in video game history as the biggest MMO blunder EVER (considering my signature on these boards, and I'll admit, I've been a whiner in years past about this issue - SWTOR will help put my woes to rest).

No, your not the only one that noticed this.  Yes, NGE was a massive blunder. It was 3.5 years ago. Post NGE SWG has been around longer than Pre-NGE. This is not recent.  It may belong on an all time list, but I'm sure a fifth blunder can be found that is a little more recent as the title indicates.

Agreed. The Number 1 recent blunder slot should have been reserved for WAR. The dangers of creating wildly unrealistic expectations would have been a good number 1, as would the way Mythic completely bungled population management (ie, releasing too many servers and not taking steps to address massive realm imbalances).

Heck, I would have even been interested to read about how WAR strung out classes and features that were promised at launch as "new content" to keep people subscribing.
