FFXIV Core has updated its ever growing and rather extensive list of features revealed for the upcoming Square Enix MMO, garnered primarily through the translation of a Japanese gaming magazine. The most recent update to the site includes information on the armory system, areas, battles, the guild system, and other key features.

Also on the site though, is information on jobs, races, and other info. Here are a few examples:

  • Did you know that four job categories will be available? Warrior, Magus, Crafter and gatherer
  • Did you know that FFXIV races will matter less statistically than they did in FFXI?
  • Combat takes place in real time and is meant to be more strategic than in a typical MMO?
  • Character level and skills won’t mean as much as equipment level
  • One day in the game would will equal about an hour in real time.
  • Changing weapons will allow players to effectively change their jobs on the fly

Check out the whole article here.

Cheers,

I agree with ex, everything they are releasing is just making this title sound better and better, hopefully it will all hold true.

I never played the FF series but this looks fantastic. Would it be too late to try FFXI  ?

"One day in the game would will equal about an hour in real time."

A HUGE minus for me. I have experienced a short-day system in Warhammer, and I don't like it at all.

A 24-hour day like in WoW is much better.

Ugh, just what we need... more equipment gathering.

I played FFXI off & on for 3 years, but unless your in the end game now or were - playing it until FFXIV comes about is all about personal preference, and what you want to do...since it takes alot of time to get to the end game :/  Still very fun, just depends how much time you have to play catchup....

As for FFXIV news, I think Square is teasing my soul:  hearing small bits of news brightens my work day, week, and sometimes month :)  Good times

As for quick days being a detractor?  FFXI's in-game clock was amazing and it added alot of complexity to crafting and several other aspects (timed quests, etc).  Most mmos don't even remotely care about anything but "day means sun" and "night means moon" when it comes to in-game time, so it is good to hear they will try another spurt at it.

Core is down for me too but Eorzeapedia has it as well  www.eorzeapedia.com/2009/08/05/races-named-classes-revealed/#more-309
man I am so pumped for this game. I'm curious about how they're going to work the crafting and I also would prefer a longer game day

How could WoW's be better? Night looks like day, except a different texture on the sky. Makes "day" and "night" utterly pointless.

I like the idea of changing weapons and changing jobs, you won't have to run anywhere to change your job. But they also said inventory space will be more important. So here comes the speculation part. They said mounts will be different, so maybe your mount will have an inventory as well.

I'm not a fan of a 1 hour day, but I really hate the 24 hour days as I usually only have time to play in the evenings and I don't want to play all the time in the dark.

I'm absolutely delighted to see a gatherer class. For some reason I just love this.

I wasn't referring to graphical effects.

A world which has (or aproximates) our own day/night cycle feels a lot more immersive to me. A one-hour day is ridiculous. 12 or 18 hours would be tolerable.

While I'm not a fan of super fast day/night cycles, 24 hours makes games do what WoW did and that was to make the game not even "have" day/night cycles for all intents and purposes.

5 or 7 hour cycles are my perferred lengths in that they are long enough to where you won't see the cycle "flash" before your eyes, but short enough if there is a quest or something that only happens at night, you have a reasonable chance to get to do it that play session, or at least soon as the 5 or 7 cycles will move the "time" when you play for most people each day. Evenly divisible times usually mean if you log on at 6pm after work, it'll always be "X" time in game and never change, which is not immersive to me.

I understand the immersion factor, but have you played FFXI? If you look at how that time system, the same as mentioned to be in FFXIV, you would understand the benefit it will have on the crafting, spell, and fishing system among others and that it NEEDS to be short in order to make those systems work. I always found the FFXI extremely immersive compared to games, and it has nothing to do with the night/day cycle.

Looking Forward to:Final Fantasy 14!!! STO and STOR and the Wheel of Time.

Playing: WoW,FFXI,LOTRO,EQ2,WAR,AoC(off and on)

Easily fixed with a 12 or 18 hour day. The same playing time would alternate day and night every 2 or 3 days.

No, I haven't played FFXI. I actually tried to get a copy at EB games last week, but they didn't have it in stock.

I think you mean the game is immersive despite the short day/night cycle. It's really a fundamental thing in a world. Not a big problem in a short 1 hour session, perhaps, but I find playing a few or several hours that such a short cycle really screws up both immersion (a world spinning that fast would fling everything lose off of itself), and my sense of time in the real world. I actually lost a day play Warhammer online several months ago. Started playing Friday evening and stopped Saturday morning. Only - it was Sunday morning.

Mind you, that's a pretty good gaming session.

As for crafting and other systems, they should be adjusted to the cycle, not vice-versa.

Jupiter spins on its axis once every 10 hours, yet it isn't flinging anything off... our own Earth is moving at around 1000mph at the equator, yet people manage to stay stuck to the ground ;)...

Gravity has a LOT to do with things staying or going ;).

So if you want to justify WAR's fast day night cycle, you just have to imagine the world is either very large (massive in size) spinning rapidly, or small but very dense (massive in density) spinning rapidly. Either way you could work it out to where the "pull" of gravity would be 1G earth standard on a world that spun 24x as fast.

As it is, the earth once spun faster than it does now, and its slowly slowing. Eventually, we'll be locked in a geosynchronus orbit around the sun (like the moon is around the earth) where one side always faces the sun and the other is in permanent night (our moon revolves around us while we revolve around the sun, so therefore the "dark side of the moon" is a misnomer, as in the far side DOES get sunlight half the time. It was only "dark" as in the light of knowledge had yet to be turned on, until the Soviets sent a satellite to photograph the far side during the 60's I believe.)
