Kinda of a letdown. I had thought when this Fan Friday was announced they would go for it now. Now, often we have new icons or fanart. Sheesh. I would guess that by now at least some things are so set in stone, that they don't change, like what classes there are or the degree of instancing. I know a Star Wars MMO is a sort of a hot topic, but I dunno... it sorta feels hilarious by now how much they make secrets even about simple, basic stuff. Looking at the ingame footage we saw recently, the game is apparently quite advanced in development, at least enoug to say *some* more than the x-th time "it is about story". Can someone with contact to Bioware maybe let them know they are becoming the laughing stuff with that by now? =P Given that speed the game will launch in 2020. :/ |

Actually, they are being smart. So many releases as of late have been fiascos, because the developers and publishers loudmouthed their game to oblivion. Don't promise us the goods if you don't have them. They will probably come out with some pretty big announcements this month to 'counter' Blizzcon. |

It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all outta gum. |
Everyone just needs to come to grips and realize that this game is a year and half away at min and more likely in the 2 to 2.5 year range. Hard to release shit when there is nothing to release. They are not going to release concepts but shit that is concrete. |

Aww come on! Don't tell me you aren't more curious than you admit, and you just sit so patiently as you pretend! Stop playing cool. =P |

Would you relese news of the game knowing ppl out there are so quick to critisize it? its still a ways off from release anyway. |

Originally posted by Yunbei I don't think anyone is pretending they wouldn't like to know more. I know I would and I hate BioWare for doing things they way they do.
And at the same time, I think it's a very valid and very good choice of distributing information. So I vote for BioWare continuing to do things exactly as they have.
Consider this: What do you think would happen if they now shared more, much more about their vision for the game. As an example, let's say (theoretically) they are planning on adding a Player Created content system that would allow players to continue writing their own stories after the Character Story is done. They work on it and try to figure out a way to include it, but eventually, they realize it's not gonna work in any way that would be good for the game and then, 2 months to release, they announce they have to can that idea.
Can you imagine the flame-festival that would ensue?
No, much better to only announce what you are completely confident in. We've seen what happens when Dev's announce a cut in planned features. And we know that this sort of thing can -always- happen in the Development of an MMO. |

I am going to give them slack. If they are truly making a fully voiced over game, I can see why they have their hands full. Have you lurked at Darkfall forums before it launched? Promises and backpedaling by developers hurt the credibility so much. Sure you can throw out "filler" to people - developer profiles, community manager profiles, productive asssitant blogs, etc. but wouldn't you rather have them working diligently on the game instead of that blather? |

I'm following this game and STO very closely and I know much more about this game than I do the other. You think having to wait a few weeks for new material is torturous? Try waiting months upon months. STO hasn't released anything new on their game since february when they released that character building video. With TOR we at least know what some of the classes are along with what the game will look and feel like. So patience my young padawan. If you don't want to play the game, don't bore everyone by stating as much. Just don't play and move on because nobody cares to hear a soapbox. |

What a clueless post, especially for a game that will be out probably in 2011. I suggest you give them some time to get the game ready for play. |

Hey everyone, For those of you who missed it, last week we put up our latest Fan Friday which announced our presence at both GamesCom and the Penny Arcade Expo. If you happen to be a Facebook user and planning on attending either of these, check out our page on Facebook and mark your attendance. Speaking of GamesCom and PAX, I wanted to go ahead and let all of you know things may be a little quiet around here for the next few weeks. For example, this week's update with be Threat of Peace #12. After we get through these next few weeks, we have a lot of content in store for all of you. Our updates at the convention (and after them) will also include updates to the website for those of you who can't join us there. And yes, there will be some new reveals as well as the Gameplay Demo Walkthrough video. For those of you who normally just check in for our weekly updates and want to know what's going up before coming to the site, we have a few things for you. If you're using a RSS Reader, make sure to add The Old Republic RSS News to it. We also bring the information to the places you are at; whenever we have an update on the official website, we also bring these releases to you on some of the social networks. You can find pages for The Old Republic at the following: |

Doesn't that mean we all expect it to be bad? When they have good news, people will mainly like it. And besides, they have to spill it at *some* point. If people will critizise it, they will. Now, later, whats the difference? On the contrary, the earlier the better, so when they see something goes totally against what fans want, they can still work on it, and not, oh look now its 2 weeks to release, sorry too late to do anything now? For me, it is part of a game fandom and community spirit that I want them to share stuff with us and not manage a computer game like Area 51. ;) |

I hope this trickle of news helps some people finally realize the game isn't coming out this year. |
Originally posted by m240gulf Well there you go. They're giving some updates at the convention so it makes sense to hold off until then. Makes perfect sense to me. If you HAVE to see new stuff right now, then go to the convention. If not, you'll just have to wait until after it's over. If you don't want to play the game, don't bore everyone by stating as much. Just don't play and move on because nobody cares to hear a soapbox. |

Actually it was planed for launch this Fall; this was the plan when they started talking about making an MMO, and this was the plan when they announced it last Oct. But then BioWare bought themselves another year for the project to do full VO, and do some polish. I imagine by this time next year some may be entering the beta test for TOR. As for the slow trickle of news, they are doing what most companies do and holding back to release stuff at events. You could say the summer was slow, yet news heavy. They have really shown some big things the last few months. |

Do you have any evidence of this schedule or any links? Or is it just industry 'buzz'? |

The game is 1.5 years away from release. What is the rush? |

I wouldn't release anything new either if 70% of the people on the forum are just going to talk shite about every little thing. I'd prefer they keep quiet. Then I can be undoubtedly surprised when the game launches. hic!...CAW! |

I doubt the game is that far away. I'm just assuming the graphics are pretty close to final version and it already looks dated, thanks to BW going after everyone with ancient computers or something. In 2 years it's going to look very old since technology advances so fast nowdays. |

Source? There was never an announced date. I saw some "insider" talking about the game in 2007 that said this year some time, but that is meaningless. Regardless, thinking back in Oct '08 the game would release late this year was at least somewhat understandable, but thinking the game is still coming out this year is pretty delusional, and there seems to be quite a few of those folks on the official forum. |

It wasn’t just some “insider” It was said by Lucas Arts, as well as BioWare. Gordon Walton also said it himself. It was really a lose plan though. The thing is BioWare has been given a bit of creative freedom, and no concrete time limits from Lucas Arts since Darrell Rodriguez took over and Jim Ward (The Warden) took his leave. It’s part of a new Lucas Arts image revamp, no longer is it all about quantity, Its’ about quality (or so they hope) The game will be done when it’s done, they still have a timeline, but if it means shoving it out the door unfinished, the quality aspect comes first. They have fear of this game suffering the same fate as SWG. No one wants that again.

Hm, tbh I have little hope that SWTOR will be anything but another highly specialized MMO, like WAR, CO or PotBS or the like. It will have a cool story, alright, play it once, play it twice and then be done. My exitement has quite cooled down. All I see is a narrow story-driven single player game with mild multi options, people hook nosed through easy pathways. I just don't see anything I connect with a MMO. People who hide stuff usually have something to hide. *hand wave* Move along.. this isnt the killer MMO you seek. |

I think that's spot on. There will be PVP but it will be in discreet areas and dungeons that have nothing to do with the 'story' - much like City of Heores/Villains. There may be an auction house, as promised, but almost certainly there will not be a player-based economy. The auctiopn house will just be for selling loot. I think SWTOR will be subscription-based but every three months or so we will have to pay for a new 'chapter'. just as currently happens with Oblivion or Fallout. I also think that EA will insist that Bioware introduce an RMT store. We will be told that the items it contains can be duplicated in game or else are not 'ncessary' to the game but, in the event, neither statement will be practically true. |
