Hi,

I'm unclear about the role of the Gladiator class.  Is it a tanking class, a dps class, or a hybrid of both?  Thanks!

Well, from where i see it a gladiator is a dps class, although by using plate he may be able to offtank in some need situations since it has taunt skills. But i wouldnt see it has a tank, and its focus is dps clearly

Gladiator is a DPS class. Their description states that they can take on multiple guys, but they can't take a lot of damage.

DPS class, although they can tank "most" situations ok just like how a chanter can main heal most situations. Their main role is DPS though and possibly acting as an off tank in PvE.

They can tank just not as good as a templar.  Their dps is decent.  Sorta a dps/tank  little of both.   

They can tank, not as good as a Templar does it, but they do more damage than temp's, so I guess they fill an offtank/dps role

I played a Gladiator in the recent beta and i really enjoyed it.

They are a DPS class, though they are not the highest DPS class in the game. The damage out put is still very nice and considering you wear plate armor... you can take on a few enemies at once without worry. They are very gear dependent though in my opinion. Keeping your gear updated will keep your DPS and survivability at a very nice level.

Gladiators are also able to tank most of the game. According to a few Korean players the only enemies a Gladiator can not tank are the really big raid bosses.

A gladiator is an OK tank.  Basically Glad + Cleric is ok for most group content as is Templar + Chanter.  Cleric + Templar is basically good for a boss fight where glad +cleric can do it but you need to be on your game and same for Templar + chanter.  A gladiator is not a good choice to tank a raid mob probably need a Templar + cleric and Chanter as well.

As for DPS they are not as bursty as an assassin but have very good sustained DPS, with good burst.  They have the most PBAOE which also allows them to create AOE threat decently.

I am not entirely certain how they manage threat for DPS versus tanking so they do not mess up a templar, I have not looked into it probably some kind of threat stance thing.  But I believe they can keep threat pretty well from what i have seen and read.
