I hate that various game companis are doing beta tie-ins with file planet. I don't want to sign up for their service to get into a game beta.

I agree, FilePlanet is far from a good service to me. Yet I'm forced to use it for several things. I remember when they announced it was going to be shut down I was actually happy...

i rarely if ever use it. ive gone to fileshack where i get up to 2.5mb/sec downloads and for free too boot. the main issue i have with fileplanet your forced to pay for their downloads, yeah could go free, and get a crappy queue where ur waiting in line with like 100+ (1 hour-2 hour wait ) but to be forced to pay to get access to a beta?? seriously? thats just nickel and diming people.

Very nice! I've been a paying Fileplanet member for years, and it saved me tons of cash from all the Beta's you get into.

Well worth the cost.

Cheap tactics..... I never understood why we have to pay for a beta since betas are here to test rather than play...

It's can't be considered an "open" beta if you have to be a subscribing member of a third party company to get in now can it?

Don't know if you can run it?

Exactly, that is why they get/buy beta accounts to hand out to subscribers. So that you have to pay for it anyways. Same as to say you get a free drink in the shop but you have to pay entrance fee to get in and get your free drink. Makes me think about a song accually.  www.youtube.com/watch

Yeah, the only reason I used it was because they had some deal With Comcast where you got the Subscriber benefits free, hated it, but at the same time its hard for me to really say no to free.

Okay, this is ridiculous.

How  "open" is a "limited numbers", "only guys who paid for some crappy service beforehand" beta, really ?

No sh*t, Cryptic really chained failures of PR with this beta. If I wasn't already sold to this game, I would consider not even trying it. (I mean, if that's how they manage their community, what does that tell us about their dev team ?)

They will only let in as many as they can handle, obviously. You want the game released for free for a little bit, claiming it's an Open Beta?

Second, Cryptic didn't only use Fileplanet. They gave away 10,000 keys through Gamerzines, for free. That's how I got mine. 60,000 keys from that and Fileplanet combined, plus, most likely, more from other places I don't know about.

All of you complainers are amazing me right now.

Cryptic needs to be able to get thousands of clients out.  Do they do it in house? hell no...that would cost them alot of bandwidth money.

So they tell Fileplanet....can we use your servers?  Fileplanet says...sure...but we need an exclusive on it.

Since Fileplanet YEAR membership is so cheap...Cryptic says. "No way will people be THAT much of tightwads" and agrees to it.

Low and behold....the tightwads have spoken.

Personally I think its a good thing...if you guys are seriously complaining about 86 cents a month or whatever it comes out to be...then you probably are going to have a hard time affording your raaman noodles when it costs $15 a month for Champions subscription.

Move back in with your parents!...or if you are already there.....ask for an increased allowance.

Yo, read me again. I told I'm buying the game anyway, I trust Cryptic that much that I'm trying their game no matter what a magazine or any fellow gamer may tell me about it, so frack that bit about me being cheap.

What annoys the hell outta me is that I and a crapload of other impatient gamers signed up on the very day the beta signup came online, only to be ignored for whatever reason we still haven't been told. That is NOT a good way to treat your prospective customers. Mind you, they could have taken 60k names out of that list for arbitrarity's sake, told me "sorry you didn't make it" and called it a day, I would have been annoyed, but much less than them trying to sh*t us into believing that they can not put a tracker for the client if they really wanted to save the bandwidth, or that they didn't have enough people who applied for the beta in the first place or whatever.

(still yes, the numbers thing bugs me a little, I mean, aren't they stress-testing the game anyway ?)

First of all...games did not used to have "Open Betas"  this term was created when the public complained about wanting a demo and developers used it as a chance to stress test their game.

As far as the way to make money.....Cryptic is making nothing on this...Fileplanet is...they have no relation to Cryptic.

my beef is why should i pay to get access?? even then its not garaunteed, as there is a limited number of keys for the "open" beta. so if you one of the many people who subbed to FP to get into the beta, ur screwed. I  say give away keys, first come first serve, like here in MMorg.com which is a reliable website, and give it to a reputable website such as Fileshack.com or even fileplanet.com(but not forced to pay a sub in order to just download) i hate exclusivity, its creates a monopoly on downloads/betas so people are forced to pay, or forced to skip over the game and go for a trial. frankly if i got access via fileshack.com or gamerhell.com or what have you, Im going for them, as they have really good downloads Im not forced either to queue up with a 100 other bums, and limited to a specific download rate.

in the end its nothing more than fileplanet.com creating a forced monopoly. and its not about people being tightwads why should i pay for a beta, that isnt even released lol. seriously lol r u kidding. create fair use/chance for people to "compete" for keys in a first come first serve orientation. though people will still complain it was fair dispersal of keys.

Why complain ? There was the promotion on gamerzines.com where you could have registred for free to get into the beta!  More paying attention and less QQ is required for play. :)

I'm frankly tired of fileplanet subscriber only betas.  Tbh however I think its here to stay.   Every major mmo seems to be using it and I really doubt this will change since most fans will pony up a few bucks to try the game they want to play.

Wow, it's deja vu for the 20th time.

Every time a game goes through Fileplanet for their beta we get threads like this.  Just like the MO beta, no one if forcing you to pay for a Fileplanet subscription to play the game.  You people make it sound like someone is holding you at gun point telling you to sign up for Fileplanet or you die.

Just don't sign up, don't play in the stress test, be happy.  The world is not going to end if you don't get to play CO before it's released.

There are many financial reasons for Cryptic not wanting to do the key distribution in-house and Fileplanet is a great distribution model for companies that don't think there download server can handle 60,000+ people downloading a 5+GB file at the same time.

Honestly there are probably going to be stability issues, they have never had this many people trying to log into the game at the same time before.  I guarantee there are going to be issues.  So if you're complaining about the way they're handling their own stress test then maybe you shouldn't play until release.  It would probably spoil the game for you.

As for myself?  I pay attention to what's going on with CO so I got one of the 10,000 beta keys for free from the e-zine site.  But I'm also a Fileplanet member and will be getting another key for my wife.

Anyone who is interested in this game *should* try the OB before going through with a purchase.  Yes there will always those that will play this game nomatter what, but for the majority who thought it was a good idea but are still on the fence....  try it now while you can
