1. LOTRO, what is the facination here, I played it when it was released and went back to it twice went back another time during MoM expansion. I found nothing fun about it, the combat felt like slow pace unless you played one of the newer more face paced classes, no one really groups any more pre MoM areas, the game feels like your regular cookie cutter mmo with all the fun out of it. 2. Age of Conan, nothing much to be said here game was really great and interactive 1-20 but after that it was boring and dull and sad and gave that cookie cutter feeling again, where the games magic died after 20. 3. Everquest 1. Yes was a great game when it was released, the ulimate adventure experience, now reduced to a shriviled up old man who is beat to death, the cash shops, the mercenaries, the lame expansions, EQ has been sucked out of its life now its soul is dying as well. Put it to rest already. 4. Star wars Galaxies, what was originally a great and unique game is now reduced to a very cookie cutter mmo, servers are baron, the blant refusal to bring back and old school server, just seeing this still alive makes me sad because it was originally a game who started off as great and original and fun. Like EQ it needs to be put to rest. 5. Vanguard, again COOOKIEs. but it was littered with bugs, no huge changes after two years - three years, only two end game raid dungeons, loot is still messy, game is still laggy, pvp still has no meaning, servers are empty, it had great promise but it was shot down due to a horrible release. Tried it during the new player experience but still its like age of conon the new starting area is not a representation of the game itself.
well they are my top five. You may have noticed I left out WoW from the list, and I may get called a WoW player but WoW does what it does best ever since it was released, being a king of clones. Its alright and does not deserve to be in the catiigorty with these terrible games mentioned aboved. |

I don't agree with this list very much. LOTRO for me, not great at launch, but ten times better after MoM and the book 7 update. Age of Conan would be good if the community wasn't atrocious and the world was not so instanced but whatever. I do agree about Star Wars Galaxies. that game died the day they opened up Jedi. Too bad, it had so much potential so that is my number 1. 1. Star Wars Galaxies 2. The Matrix Online - utterly horribly game, I can't believe it is still running(unless it's not and I'm imagining things) 3. Aion - yes I said it, I hate this game, I'm not going to expound on it anymore as I'm sure I'm going to get flamed for this comment anyway. 4. Vanguard - the game feels like an EQ 1.5. right in between EQ1 and 2. Just can't get into it at all. 5. I'm going to put 2 here just because I can and because they both meet my same criteria for AGE of a game. Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot(I know, younger than Ultima, but the game is practically empty now, giving the same feeling) Looking Forward to:Final Fantasy 14!!! STO and STOR and the Wheel of Time. Playing: WoW,FFXI,LOTRO,EQ2,WAR,AoC(off and on) |

Matrix Online dies at the end of this month (a simple google search would have told you this) oh and Aions fine ;) for a Korean game, i expected a grind :P 1) Lotro is mostly for people who PvE, rather than Pve with a bit of PvP on the side. (monster play sucks... lets get that out of the way now) but yes combat is slow, crafting is rather crap, and lets not get into "deed quests", if i wanted to kill 120 goblins at level 25 in order to get a little increase in an ability.... i'd shoot myself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yqVD0swvWU enough said. 2) If AoC was released now, in its current state, i think people would be happy with it... it didn't, even Funcom have hinted that F2P idea isn't totally ruled out for the future. Lets face it, i've known people to get a full refund at launch simply because of the "promises" that Funcom made. The please resubscribe 20% off because servers are empty only helps highlight this ;) even WAR weren't that desperate to add a discount and an item... although 3) WAR - crap engine, quest bugs, heavily instanced, lack of content, no balance because of all the classes added and mythic don't have a clue. Again if released now the way it is, then no one would complain. But... no.. it's crap. Tome of Knowledge the only good thing about the game (reading through the stories actually is a lot better than playing) 4) Vanguard - should never have been released. 5) DDO (luckily it's now gone free to play model... unless you're in Europe, thank you codemasters)
The one that should have gotten a mention is PoTBS, such a great concept and even the starter weeks were fun... but as soon as eco bombing hit and the developers went into denial... it'd gradually gone downhill. Still they're plugging away at it... but for me it died within a month. I've seen more realistic water running on a PS1

I'd put Warhammer no1 on this list for reasons every person pretty much knows about already. #2 I'd have to put WOW which is funny because I think wow is a pile of .... What it does is hand hold very well. It's pvp sucks, loot whoring sucks,, the community sucks, the classes suck, the styles suck, but I'll give some of the landscape/artwork a nod and the game runs well. |

The OP dared to have an opinion, this guy in the red is obviously far more superior and his speech is far more valid. If you can't see that then you too should be banned from this server. As your opion is far less more valid than his.

I can't tell you want to think about a game, since that is your freedom and right to form opinions about a subject. On the other hand, I wonder what you consider as cookie cutting. The fact it may have quest system? combat? crafting? Point A to point B? I don't consider this entirely cookie cutting, this is basic concept. If you take the basic concept away there might be nothing left for it to be considered a game. Of course we all love original ideas, but when it comes to developing games, original ideas need to be carefully applied. If a game is highly original, but the players cannot keep up with it, then the game is more likely to become burnt cookie before it even left the oven.

Did you ever play or see "The Realm"? UO? How about the original MUDS like Gemstone, Cyberstrike, etc? Surely you don't consider EQ an grandfather. The only thing they did was make it 3d. Aside from that what was special about it? <--Oldschool mmo'er (that's like saying "I was one of the first to be a geek"). But then again your opinion is far greater than ours.

NO. I said I will probably get flamed because of fanbois like yourself who can't stand Aion being trashtalked in any way. I think it should be on the list, MY list, because I was vastly disappointed with it and the surrounding hype. Looking Forward to:Final Fantasy 14!!! STO and STOR and the Wheel of Time. Playing: WoW,FFXI,LOTRO,EQ2,WAR,AoC(off and on) |

1. LOTRO - I will agree with the OP here.. The world held me over for a few weeks but after the " newness " wore off I was bored to tears. The combat is the worst part.. a PvE game having bad PvE combat is not acceptable. 2. WAR - Everything about it is bad , bad , BAD. 3. EQ1 - Take this thing outback and put it out of its misery already. 4. DAoC - The first 4 or so months were fun.. You know.. Before Mythic started nerfing and adding overpowered crap every other day. RvR was lame due to many LOS issues and pet issues and overpowered abilities.. People like to claim this game had meaningful PvP but it didnt. 5. UO - Dont get me wrong I still enjoy the game but its time to move on EA! This thing is NOT going to matter again no matter how many bad engines you create ( SA is the worst yet .. 10 year old 2D textures with 3d models? YUCK ). |

Why is everyone posting lists of P2P MMOs? I can list about 30 F2P MMOs before I even put a single P2P on a list. If you want to truely stinky MMOs start with those. If we are talking about just P2P MMOs I'll contibute my list though, just keep in mind I'd be list loads of F2P MMOs above this before I even would start this list if we were including those (this list is in no particular order though): 1. Ultima Online - There is really no reason this game should still exist. Just let it die. Sure, it was one of the first and one of the best MMOs of all time, but it's time it's laid to rest. No amount of updating is going to bring this game up to date. 2. Warhammer Online - Sure, the subscriber base is pretty good. Still, the potiental this one had went down the drain. Poor design mechanics coupled with too much of an attempt to copy WoW (why didn't Mythic just copy from DoAC? that's what most people wanted) turned this into a rather generic MMO. Whatever engine it's using it looks nearly as dated as WoW, but without the ability to run on computers that can barely handle WoW and more frequent client crashes. 3. Star Wars Galaxy - Another game that had potiental. Each update to this game was more and more disastorous. Like Ultima Online the game is showing it's age. 4. The Matrix Online - Someone posted this is still running? I can't believe this hasn't been cancelled yet (even if it's going to be cancelled this month... wow how did this game last that long?). Actually I take it back, this would be one game that might get on the list before F2P MMOs. I can't think of a 5th that would belong here as far as P2P goes. Maybe EQ1 due to it's age or Vanguard due to it being pretty generic and buggy. Age of Conan still has a decent amount of potiental in it and could turn around (plus 1-20 is fun). Games like Aion, WoW, FFXI, Eve, DoAC, EQ2, LotRO etc. really don't belong on anyone's list in my opinion. Note that there are quite a few MMOs coming out that are under NDA right now so I can't talk about them, but they are even worse than these I mentioned. So it's only going to get worse soon. At least 2010 is looking good for the MMO industry. |

Yes. Aion has no hype when players can play and read reviews of players who have played the entire game for a year. I can stand Aion being trashtalked but I just wanted to point out how flawed your argument was. You are going to get flamed for bashing Aion because threads bashing Aion are far and few between. What about Aion disappointed you? Did it make your guild/clan quit from some game you were playing? |

They all suck because they all have major flaws which break the game, no matter how good other aspects of the game are. World of Warcraft is the best out there right now because it offers both great PVE and PVP with great classes and combat. The art style is great and the lore is great and all of the content is of a much higher quality than other mmorpgs. However I wont play it anymore cause Battlegrounds killed world PVP and now the world feels dead. Everquest is crap because it's old and the gameplay just doesn't stand up today. I also found the world to be dead and thats no fun. Star Wars Galaxies is crap because SOE ruined it etc etc. All of them have game breaking problems.

WTH are you talking about a flawed argument? There's no argument. This thread is about opinion. Get over it already. 1. UO - The game's time has come and gone. 2. Asheron's Call - Again, let it die already. 3. EQ1 - Same here. 4. Vanguard - A bad game that's now getting worse. There is no real support from SOE for this game. 5. SWG - The greatest example I can think of showing a company blatently ignorning it's own customer base...for years.

1. WoW - For obvious reasons.
2. Darkfall - It SHOULD have been vaporware.
3. SWG - Again, obvious reasons.
4. Matrix - Just a horrible game.
5. WoW - Because it's bad enough to be on the list twice. |

Hmm. This is a challenge; to try and compare the fail-value of each MMO and condense them into a top 5. I'll ignore F2P games (as I've never played one) as I consider it to be a far deeper depth of fail when a developer actually wants us to PAY for the crap-on-a-plate they're serving up. 1. SWG. Deserves to be top of the list as a precautionary tale against developer intervention. Alienating your existing fanbase in an attempt to increase subscriptions by making a far inferior copy of a popular game? From which planet did that logic originate? 2. WAR. Again, deserves a top spot as a precautionary tale against developer hype. A tip, if you spend months repeatedly telling us how fantastically orgasmically great an element of a game is going to be, it better not suck at release. 3. LOTRO. I respect the IP. Tolkien is freaking awesome; I was excited to be able to delve into a living, breathing, vibrant middle-earth and experience the epic storytelling of the master of fantasy himself. What I got was a game with all the charm of an unbranded wheat biscuit. I was Frodo's bitch, man. Kill 10 boars and make a boar pie for Frodo's supper. Knit some new undercrackers for Sam; his are all stained and crusted with the excitement of bedding down next to the big F every night. 4. Tabula Rasa. Garriot, Garriot, Garriot. You put your name on it, dude. A radically changed core concept, rushed release with little to no content, distinct lack of variety .. these things I could have overlooked; it had potential, it was even fun .. but then you went to space. Yeah, think of that .. you brought it to life, gave it your name and then abandoned it, flew away and stopped supporting it. You're one deadbeat daddy. 5. Pirates of the Burning Sea. Ok, look. I just love Pirates, right? I have been known to proclaim "Arrrr" on random occasions; I'm even attracted to australians on the basis that their accents sound vaguely pirate-like. Eyepatches turn me on. I was looking forward to PotBS quite a lot, and I am pretty disgusted (though mildly impressed) that a developer has managed to make piracy BORING AS HELL. That.. was strangely cathartic. |

I agree with the OP except I would substitute EQ2 for EQ1. No doubt EQ1 sucks now as it is nothing like classic EQ was, but EQ2 was never any good. |
