Requiem: Bloodymare, Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine, Sword of the New World, Runes of Magic, and Atlantica online

random order, well I guess my preference anyways.

He probably meant 2009, just mistyped it.

Perfect World, Runes of Magic, Sword of the New World, DDO(upcoming), Requiem Bloodymare.

I could not include Atlantica because the client runs like molasses on my computer and I find the combat extremely lame.  If you are going to do strategic combat, let me at least move the pieces around like they did in heros, those two battle lines just make me laugh.

I am looking forward to seeing more cash shop MMOs fail, especially the Korean grinders.

So im guessing you dont like the final fantasy series? Because the system is just like that but more intense.

There's only four F2P MMOs that I really like and I like them because they each stand out in their own way:

  • Dungeon Runners - Diablo's bastard stepchild.  Simple concept, great humor and fun, casual play.  It also has some of the best group mechanics of any game on the market. It's a welcome time waster.  It doesn't really have any depth and that's ok by me.  It is what it is.  Is it really a MMO?  More like MMO-lite.
  • Atlantica Online - I dig the turn-based combat.  It's not JAWC (just another WoW clone).
  • Runes of Magic - JAWC?  Yes and no.  It bears some similarities, but Runes of Magic's appeal is that it takes good features from a number of other games and puts them into a single package
  • Exteel - MMO?  Questionable, since it's lobby based, but it can be a hell of a lot of fun.  Giant robots shooting each other and blowing stuff up?  Good times.

Honorable mention - Wizard101.  No, it's not a F2P game.  It's a "freemium" game with a non-expiring free trial that limits you to the equivalent of "Newbie Island".  The revenue model is a hybridized a cash shop with a subscription plan.   While it's not free, it can be a tremendous value and there's a lot of depth to be found in it's combat system.  It's a serious contender, designed for kids, but addictive to adults, too.

I won't touch F2Ps so thus far 2009 has been pretty damn barren as far as MMORPGs are concerned.

I'll give Aion a try once it launches, but the only other title that I'm really looking forward to is TOR and I wouldn't expect that to release this year.
