Hi all,

 

I'm thinking about playing a spiritmaster at release, but I have one worry.  I tried a spiritmaster over the weekend and really enjoyed it.  Whenever I was flying, my pet seemed to follow along the ground.  If PvP has a lot of fights while flying, how are spiritmasters supposed to use their pets in PvP air combat?

Your pets don't fly at all ever. So, you kind of have to consider that during flight. They will continue to fight for you on the ground though.

Pet does not fly.  You get a skill at higher levels that force enemies to the ground.  It's called binding wings.

 

If you do it  real high in the air, your enemy falls to their death.  It removes time from their flight.

Hmm, no pet in air should make for some interesting strategy anyway.  It seems like that there is more incentive for a spiritmaster to stay grounded...since that's where your pet can help protect you.  In one-on-one encounters, it does seem like spiritmasters will be at a disadvantage to ranged dps as they can just fly up and nuke you from above to avoid getting attacked from pet (although the ability to knock someone out of the air may equalize this somewhat for the spiritmaster).

In PvE, the spiritmaster has been the easiest class to use so far for me.  The DP mechanic to put your pet in "uber" mode makes questing quite easy.

If i'm not mistaken, there is talk about adding a flying pet in a not to distant future.

First I've heard of it.  I read that the issue is a limitation of the gaming engine and cannot be patched.  That's also why you don't see flying mobs / Balur (not including bugs hovering above the ground).

It's a pathing issue of a bot utilizing the vertical dimension in space and knowing his position in relation to varying terrain.

Even with this it seemed like spirit masters were a really strong class in PvP. You guy's certainly hurt. :)

Good for team based PvP.  SM's have a root spell that rocks, and a couple slow spells.  Root and slow while your team and pet focus DPS on one player at a time.

I'm not guilded, but a smart team using voice chat could really lay waste to most pickup groups.

1v1 is a different story.  Like Sorcs, SM's have paper armor.  A small damage shield is the only defense buff I had at level 18, which usually disappears after a couple hits.  After that, toast.

In PvE, I hide behind my pet.  It works and is quite a bit of fun when you get a couple adds, throw down a root and a slow, kite around and nuke down one mob at a time.  Pop a potion or use a spell to transfer health to the pet.  Aside from Mana being slow, its not so bad if you have some low level mana potions.
