I started playing DF 5 days ago. I have been off work all week so i have managed to bash it a bit during this time.
First impressions were mixed, i did get quite a lot of lag but as soon as i turned off shadows it was fine and i have a prety old comp not been upgraded for 2 years! The game still looked pretty good without shadows so i was fairly impressed graphics wise. The starting areas are not exactly over run with players, each race has 3 starting areas i think so people are a little spead out to start with but as i played the game and moved around i realised there are actually a lot of people on the server. trade and race chat is always lively.
The first thing that really impressed e was the AI during combat. Yes there could be more variety of mobs and maybe a few more interesting quests and yes i do know this a pvp focussed game but some interesting quets at the newb areas would help grab peoples attention and provide a little focus for the first few days, Anyway back to the ai, as lots have suggested in previous reviews its amazing! The mobs just really do seem smart they not only run off whhen on low health but they switch weapons to suit the situatiojn and really seem to work together during combat. I
I also found the player base fairly mature and helpful on thew whole which was a surprise considering the type of game. I was helped along at the begining by a player and given a bot of starter gear. Without this i would have found the goblins tough and you really do have to pick your fights and thing about what you're doing. Remember to bank ofen as enemies may be just around the next tree ready to pounce! The game does provide a sense of atmosphere and danger in that respect. By the end of the week i am hooked there is so much variety as far as the crafting side of things goes and now i have joined a clan it opens up a whole new game and havent even experienced the ships and seige battles yet.
Overall the key to remember here is you cant judge this game on a few hours play. It is TOUGH at first and possible tough all the way through, but it is worth it! THis is the game i have been looking for and i havent enjoyed a game this much since my first game...swg pre-cu. Get in ther have fun join a clan be good, or be evil, its up to you but give it a few days and you will start to see the potential. I am playoing on the EU server and would be more than happy to group up with any players just starting and getting you some starter gear so give it chance!
some improvemets that would be great... a better chat system and a few more npc's in towns abd a few more quests at the start. maybe even SPEECH BUBBLES! but other than that its great!

I`m not into DF, do not indend to try it (waiting for MO) but after all that bashing, flaming, trolling etc, its refreshing to see an honest, subjective and detailed review. Cheers!
/R. Better to be crazy, provided you know what sane is... |

I bought it expecting it to be a pile of shit, but I'm actually having a great time so far too! Only been in for 3 days but I've already crafted my mount, a nice new bow with some arrows, and a set of shiny armor! I'm on the EU server too; an Ork. |

I'm glad most people here do not have "holier-than-thou" attitude - that only promotes flame wars. @OP: nice post, glad you are enjoying DF. Keep'em coming! I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time. |

Out of curiousity, when did you try the game? It's gone through significant changes and having played since beta can tell you the experience on the NA server a few days ago is far different from my experiences in EU over the past 5 months on just about every level. So not trying to argue, just curious when you tried the game. Thanks -CC "Lately it occurs to me, |

I just couldn t get into it, and yet I love challenge. It was just a poorly made game to me. I logged into DAOC after I quit and remembered what a good game was like, albeit DAOC now is nothing like it used to be. I couldn t justify the monthly cost for to me such a shallow game. If I wanted big battles I can just play PS again. |

You couldn't find cancel button for 3 months ? How did it happen you played for 3 months while HATING it ? -----MY-TERMS-OF-USE-------------------------------------------------- "There was suppression of speech and all kinds of things between disturbing and fascistic." Raph Koster (parted $OE) |

You couldn't find cancel button for 3 months ? How did it happen you played for 3 months while HATING it ? Hmm so if I said I gave it 2 weeks it s ok?? As I said I gave it a fair shake. No harm in trying to see if it improves. The base game has improved a bit, but the people leaving making the world barren isn t good. I think you need to get a grip, if I make an effort to really give a game a chance and it s wrong to you then well I don t know what to say. Make up your mind, play it too long to try and give the game a shot, don t play long enough and I have no idea what I m talking aboput. The game is shallow and boring, but as I said I tried, because before release I was almost as big a fanbois as you re. Defference is I can actually see it s faults and admit to them. |

Do those of us enjoying the game have a "Hardcore" tatoo I haven't seen? That is a label used by the DFO Hatebots. {mod edit} but there are certainly EU guilds that aren't going any where, and with the game improving as it has, I think the future is very bright despite what the critics believe and often hope for. -CC "Lately it occurs to me, |
