a pretty fair representation of DF for a first day noob.

www.youtube.com/watch

not all first day players will experience this much, i know i spent a few days in the noob area just building up my assets and getting to grips with the controls, which being FPS-based, take some getting used to.

Yay for showing a large void empty world? They still need to add so much to the game. Give it another year and it may...may be worth it.

learn2sandbox.

sandbox worlds are *supposed* to be more realistic and not have quest mobs spread all over the zone at evenly-spaced intervals. the DF world is huge remember, if you want to get lost in the wilderness, you can.

Here's my attempt with an analogy. Irl, once I go outside there is nobody walking around because it's a quiet neighborhood. But once you get to the main part of the city, there is lots of people around. Same in darkfall, there are people concentrated in certain areas like NPC towns, player owned cities, certain mob spawns.

you don't know what a sandbox MMO is then. a sandbox game is any game that is designed mainly around player-created content, as distinct from developer-created content (aka "themepark").

Yay lets derail yet another thread into a Sandbox vs. Themepark semantics argument! Or how about not...

Great video javac... while Darkfall might not really be my cup of tea (remains to be seen), videos and play diaries go a long way in promoting the game and letting people know what the game is like. I for one appreciate the effort.

Where is the player created content in Darkfall besides naked pvp???   Sorry my friend I think some of u people on this site actually get confused what a sandbox game really is.  If u want to see what a true sandbox game is and has been defined and mentioned then go look at GTA that is a sandbox game, Spore is a true sandbox game.  Nothing is Darkfall is sandbox, so because u think its a big empty world its sandbox? ?  hell anyone in any mmo can go woundering about if they want like in lotro, wow, eq2, vanguard etc.

everything in the game is player craftable, player-buildable cities, hamlets, villages, teleports, mounts, ships, vehicles. in-depth support for territorial conquest and diplomacy interface.

I know there's alot of haters around here but honestly DF with all its shortcomings is the biggest sandbox game around, by far.

Bitch and moan about it but that's the truth.

DFO....nope, sorry, it's not a sandbox and many of us here have the expereince to know better.

So wait so u can craft a few things and you think its sandbox???lol

Hell in that case Wow must be  a sandbox game it has craftable mounts, craftable armour, craftable jewels, craftable potions, craftable inscriptions, craftable ammo, craftable scehmatics, craftable first aid bandages, craftable food etc etc areas in the world for pvp etc etc.

But on a side note, I watched the movie and it was preety amazing, I must say I do want to try the game out for sure.  Any info on what GPU the user was using??.

try reading next time. in DF you can craft every single item plus cities and all that other stuff.

sandbox == player-created content, themepark == developer-created content.

apparently you don't. while i agree EVE is the best example of a sandbox game in the market, DF has some features that are more sandboxy than eve - eg in DF every useable item can be crafted, not true in EVE, there are lots of things that can't be player-crafted in EVE.

as a sidenote, DF is much more of a sandbox than EVE was at release.

Can you build a house/city  (space station) in EVE like you can in DF? Can you steal ships like you steal mounts in DF?

I played EVE but never to the higher levels so i'm just curious.

you can't build a *space station*, only a POS (player-owned starbase), which is sort of close. it's not like a home though, it's more like a grove/mine/farm + a place where you run research jobs (no DF equivalent) and capital ship manufacture. all in all it's equivalent to a player-built city in DF, and built in sections, same as DF.

it's really only possible to steal ship by corporate theft, exactly equivalent to stealing a mount out of the clan bank in DF. if you can convince/ransom/scam a dude to eject from his ship (very very uncommon), you can take the empty ship.

in truth there are a lot of "sandbox similarities" between EVE and DF, and while EVE certainly does have more sandbox content than DF, the difference isn't as big as the rabid EVE fanbois/DF trollbois would have you believe.

sandbox or themepark...who cares. The video does look nice except the orange and brown parts. And its not quest mobs I was speaking of. It seemed void of all life. No critters or anything to make the world seem somewhat alive. Also he didnt seem to run across many people in his travels.

yeah critters/animals would be some nice fluff. in beta they had flocks of birds flying around, i think they took them out back when the server was a bit flaky due to the long player queues.

the guy was on NA-1, which only just opened, but you can for sure still find empty areas if you go looking. IMO that's a feature, not a bug.

Fluff would be nice for sure otherwise it feels like something is missing is all. And no people do not need to be tripping over each other for sure. Again I just wished it wasnt AV running it. Its always been the company more than the game

Come on.  You seriously take Javac for whatever the hell?

When Tasos first talk about how powerful PvE is in DF, these fanbots claim that PvE is features.  Upon lauch, there is nothing, so now to these fanbots PvE is fluff.  The new patch was supposed to reintroduce better PvE and less grind.  Now suddently that is great news from AV.

See the pattern?  That is why no one cares what these fanbots claimed.  They are just spinning.

Yes, you can build stations. Player Owned Structures can be used for research, invention, manufacturing, a base to change ship fittings, etc. Some activities can only performed in low security systems as far as I understand though I have not really been on the "management" side of a structure.

As far as stealing ships...I suppose you could, but the logistics might be a bit tricky. I mean, you need to pilot your ship right? So, how are you going to pilot a second one? If you worked with someone you could probably ransom someone out of their ship and have a buddy show up to fly it off for you. Again, this would be logistically tricky as your buddy would need to have the skills to fly the particular ship you just acquired.

I think, when comparing the "sandboxiness" of EvE vs. Darkfall, many people are looking at the tools provided for players to affect the game world. Things like the sovereignty system, contracting system, bounty system, local banking, etc in EvE enable players to immerse themselves and take on their own adventures. I'm not really sure what DF has that would be equivalent aside from a skill system (thought naturally, implemented differently in a use based versus time based skill training). Sure there are player cities, but can you decide where to put them? Do they actually have any influence on territory control aside from the plot of land the city is on?

I mean, if city building is where it is at for a person then they might be better off playing SWG even in it's current state. Even afte the NGE, the city building in SWG is very flexible and gives it's residence access to and control of whatever resources exist within the city limits.

You can't build cities just anywhere you want, right? So by that definition, that is athmepark - devs designed where you put your city, you have no say in that. All you do is pick the type of building you chose. Am I right?

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
