They say the game is is beta stage, but it clearly isnt. Beta is when the game is basically done. You are there to find bugs, and other minor problems.

But in MO, the skills aren't done, the crafting isn't done, the mobs aren't done, the world isn't done. Just look at the dev quote below.

"Attribute balancing, basic Skill gain (a few example skills)
"Vendor-crafting" (you bring resources to a vendor, who then crafts stuff for you according to your instructions, like in Combat Beta). The Skills and GUI (Graphical User Interface) for the "real" crafting is still in development
Very basic resource-gathering (refining, prospecting etc will be in together with crafting later on, meaning at the moment you will get magically pre-refined resources when mining, etc)

Fundamental AI-behavior, a few creatures
Around 32km^2 of the Myrland continent"

I don't see how a game that is still in Alpha stage, is going to release this year.

I payed for a boxxed copy of the game.

I got the chance to beta/alpha test it because I bought it.

I'm happy to get the chance to help shape a game I look forward to.

Answer your questions mate?

More like pay to work for them.

But I know I'd have done it, if the price wasn't so expensive.

They should pay the alpha testers. Not the other way around xD.

See you ingame m8, and luckily we won't have all the whiners there. Hmm, or shall I say sadly we will not have them there (can always need someone to kill) ;o)

Lol @ OP. Atleast they are honest about it BEFORE you buy the game. If DFO would be the same (practically paid for the beta there as well if you remember) about how their game was, they would probabely have quite more subs right now. Epic fail I would say with drastically loosing all the subs that fast... Poor fellas!

To answer your question right away. Because I could afford it, and I wanted to!

No lies there, you have the chance to help shaping core features as they mentioned.

And the beta access is only a bonus for being in the first 1000 game pre-orderers.

yes, what i find most disturbing about this is the almost non-existence of the gathering and crafting parts of the game - - - this is the vaunted "make a gazillion different items!!!!"

at least there is no definite release date - - - i think this is gonna go on a lot longer than most think

(and seriously, despite the many games i've helped beta - if i paid - and overpaid in this case - to be in one i would be there to just screw around)

Got to hand it to 'em for being honest about it. Having the chance to help shape a game rather than be subjected to it's undeniable crap is definately stepping in the right direction. Beta is an unusual  experience and it will be even better if they listen to the people getting to test it out. I hope you people point things out well and not over compensate.

I myself would have liked to be there, but I just can't justify handing someone money for it. I would hope they didn't need the cash that bad to not allow testing for them for free. Maybe this way will be good as long as the fanatics don't get free reign. Good luck.

1. They are honest.

2. It's not throwing money around if I enjoy helping a game that I have desire to play come to fruition.

It's not an issue of paying for an incomplete game, it's an issue of paying for a game with devs that you see are capable of doing something great.

To me, what you're saying is sort of like saying "why have a kid when he could grow up to be an evil serial killer?"

Or a delusional sycophantic Dork-n-Fail fanboi.

As long as the devs are honest I have no problem helping them develop a better game, and the cost is trivial for those of us that live off our own finances.

When the devs and their mouthpieces start the spin, lies, and hype like a certain Greek and his company, then that is where I draw the line

The vaunted "make a gazillion different items!!!!" is in, except it's an npc that works as the in-between since there's no crafting UI yet.

It's precisely that honesty from the people from Star Vault that makes the difference with the lies and false promises of a guy named Tasos. The MO devs don't try to make reality look better than it is, and people were warned of what they would get in the beta starting next Monday.

If you wonder why I don't answer your posts, it's most likely because you are on my ignore/block list. I recommend its use to everyone here - it helps you stay sane, avoid trolls, and by not answering to the troll's bait posts, avoid problems.

Exactly.

And;

3. They have shown us that they have some brilliant thinkers in the team with ideas and a vision that knocked me of my shelf.

4. You have to stand up for fresh and new ideas coming from indy developers in this industry. We all know how concepts get to be watered down to appeal to more massive crowds if published under the umbrella of big, established corporations. Seeing a new company with fresh ideas succeed will benefit the whole genre.

5. Save the Sandbox! (It's on the endangered playground features list).

Crafting and gathering are there.

They just aren't done.
You gather finished resources as aposed to raw mats, and  you give them to an NPC to make the item.
You can still craft a crapton of stuff from one of the beta combat reviews I read.

I have no desire to play the beta.
However, I do have a desire to test it.
I'm also aware that it's not the advansed stages of beta.  Sv is pretty clear about what you're getting into.

I am curious why anyone would prepurchase the game to play the beta though.  I know some people did.
Those people are going to be incredibly disappointed.

1. You did not have to pay to be in Darkfall Beta.

2. Darkfall has not lost loads of subscriptions, just look how busy the game is even after the NA server just opened.

Thanks.

You didn't have to pay to be in MO beta either, they've let people in before they ever started accepting money.

Whoever is paying money now is paying for the release game and beta access is just a bonus, if someone is paying just so they can get into beta that's their own problem.

Funny how some people always seem to care what others do with their private money. In matters of entertainment! Why do i never see any complainers running around at the stock markets bitching about all those greedy bastards sucking jobs and whole companies they do not even own into their fat wallets??

Amazing things happen in our times...

On the case of Beta the devs already stated that they will fill the Beta client with more features and content over time. Why throw the whole thing at people when you can do it step by step for starters. Doing focused testing is not THAT stupid! And Beta is NOT when a game is basically done..that would be a RC version. That is something people started to think when games like WAR and AOC offered their "Betas" which were mostly pretty bugged release clients that just lacked of heavy user load testing. A true Beta is in most cases a very unstable and bug-infested piece of software that gets hammered into shape over time and is pretty technical in the beginning. Just like it will be in MOs case. Personally i love it.

Also bringing up DF is pretty weak...with double charging NA players because of their "phantom NA publisher" which just out of luck is also named...Aventurine! DF has pretty much lost its comparison factor to any game out there...i won`t even go into details because that is not the issue here.

To this comment lol, from the day they released the game I believed they were charging people to play a beta. The reason I didn't follow my friends to Darkfall I played the closed beta and it was no where near complete just a week before release. So in my eyes people did not only pay 50 bucks or whatever for the game they were also charged a monthly fee to play a "beta"

Ok well I have pretty much bought it just waiting for certain difficulties to be fixed but the reason I bought the game is one, I believe in the company making the game because to date they have been honest and they aren't sugar coating the game, two I got it because I wanted to be able to play the game from release so on the day the servers go official I will instantly be able to get into the game because I have the game already. Like other people have said we aren't paying to play a game thats still in alpha stage were paying to buy the actual end product thats what a preorder is.

Um in DF everyone have been paying for beta for months. Just now they are making people pay for the game. Oh and judging from how empty the NA server is I would say they have lost quite a few subs.

as a software developer that has been working in the commercial world for over 10 years, it's clear the stage they are at would be described as 'beta'. alpha means rudimentary functionality, missing features, and known bugs. these guys have said the game has been feature complete and in active internal testing for several months. it's clearly beta. ---javac on darkfall 9/26/08

Feel free to duke it out with javac about what alpha and beta mean

I bought the game because the whiney and bitchy people are all on these forum whining about how the game is too pricey and how they cant afford it ect ect ect. I trust SV, if they fail, it would suck so... that's that,

Mortal Online is by far, the only MMO I wish that they make a good game. Darkfall failed miserably after 8years which kind of suck and no other game are worth playing now...

Two things turned me off for buying it

1. $75.00 **** Who wants to pay $75 for an unpolished piece of Alpha crap when you could pay less than $50 for something decent

2. I have lost faith in europe creating a good mmo after the long list of failures. Does Darkfall or AOC ring a bell ? Europe will have to produce something good with great reviews and a free trial before I throw my money their way again.

You guys that think getting in the game early for $75 will make you better than the next guy in the long run must be smoking something. In the long run skill will always catch and surpass

So what you are saying is that either you are an investor or you are giving charity to Starvault. Either way, you won't get any return on your investment so have fun when the devs drive around in Ferraris (if the game sells well) and you are stuck with your Volvo.

To support my dream. Yes MO is the game I waiting from the time I stopped playing UO. Its my dream. If there are enough players that support it it will become briliant game soon or later.

Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

I pay the game for the Limited version.

I think I don't play the beta.
