And the funny thing is that neither is an RPG. Upgrade Complete and Achievement Unlocked are both satirical takes on the state of mainstream gaming. Upgrad Complete in particular defines the mentality of your average MMORPG. I'll leave it up to you fine folks to figure out why. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2if5GYXOGyo |

They are both more like flash games than MMORPGs. I would have to say that i like both of them but they got boring after a little. |

funny games, but they kinda highlight everything i like in mmorpgs, not hate. i cant stand playing a game where im the same all the way through it anymore. i feel a need to character build as a progress. seems like you dislike the rpg of mmorpg. but yeah i get the whole, "earn the right to play the whole game by playing the game" beef. |

Weird, what you hate about MMORPGs is one thing I like, maybe the reason people even care about trying games with persistent elements. It gets sad when they move that into Item Malls though. |

Just finished Upgrade Complete. And yes I will play it again. |

I can see the point your trying to make with both of these games. Upgrades, achievements, money, free time, etc. It all pertains to MMOs in about everyway possible. That being said, there is one thing your missing the point of, that is that most gamers have a love for their chosen game. |

The funny thing is, the guy who made Upgrade Complete is trying to make a point, that a game should be about fun and not a complicated upgrade system, he even has a message at the end screen say as much. But he disproves his point because his game is actually fun. Although it is short and easy, it is fun. So sorry guy who made the game, point not proven. |

Of course the point isn't going to make sense to hardcore achievers. It's like someone proclaiming the evils of whips and chains to sadists and masochists. |

I take it you aren't a shmup fan. Therefore let me direct you to the game list over at Shoot The Core. Just try out any of the games on display for a few minutes and compare your experience to Upgrade Complete. Being as you are uninitiated into the brotherhood of Bullet Hell, I'll try to make this as clear as I can. Shmups are about challenge. Unreasonably high, frustrating challenge. The ultimate goal of any shmup connoisseur is to "1cc" the game. That is, to beat the game with no continues. In endless games like Titanion or Gunroar, the goal is to roll the score. To this day I have not been able to 1cc Don Pachi or roll the score in Gunroar and I've been playing them for years. With this in mind, can you see how thoroughly they neutered the genre in order to make a point? The game is not difficult by any stretch of the imagination. Enemies don't shoot back and actually pass right through you. Yes, you can fail a mission but after enough upgrades you're guarenteed to win. You cannot lose this game. There is never a point where you, the player, have to get better in order to advance. Near the end of the game, you're litterally grinding down the wall of enemies that are descending from the top of the screen. It feels less like a battle and more like drilling through rock. It doesn't matter how you play, eventually you will succeed. This is why I dislike MMORPGs. Unlike other RPGs (*cough* NetHack *cough* *cough*) these games give you the ability to advance no matter what. It's just a matter of time investment. Even in Diablo, you would eventually run out of "yard trash" mobs in an area and have to face the boss with what you had. In MMORPGs, everything spawns in a never ending supply so it's just a function of time, or group size, that determines victory. Seriously, I sometimes wonder why we even classify MMORPGs as games.

You won't respond to my post, because you know i'm right. |
Meh, I see yoru points. I actually like upgrade systems, I like seeing somthing new and feeling like I have more power. I don't really like acheivments. or anything like that. I don't ever work twards them.
(Btw upgrade complete was a blast) If at first the power of persuasion doesn’t work, use the persuasion of power. |
