Somehow my first thought on this was: Duke Nuke'em Online... ;-)

On second thought, though...: *darn* maybe I just revealed the true nature of that prime example of absurdity of the term "when it's done".

The company that first came to my mind even before reading the article was (also) Bethesda, indeed.

Unless I missed it, I don't htink John Romero will be coming back to Id. Here was his Twitter on Zenimax buying out Id:

"ZENIMAX??????? Disgusting," he declared on his Twitter page, before going on to muse, "Fallout 3 bought DOOM. Wow."

Course, he does go on to say his initial reaction was "harsh", so the bridge isn't totally burned. It's definetely charred and looking brittle, though.

"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."

Very nice list Jon!  For the first time I have to say that I can't disagree with anything you said. =P  God for the days of Sierra making an MMO.  If they make a police quest mmo, I'm pre-ordering the day it's announced. lol

Id like to see MMO from Katauri. It is russian team that made Space Rangers and new King's Bounty. Every game those guys make are amazing quality, hope they switch focus from single player to online

True Katauri and other Russian/East Europe companies are definatley on the rise. They are getting very good funding (for their area) and do not have as many pupeteers (EA etc...) pulling their strings yet.

Keep an eye on out on any game coming from that area. They are all trying to push the envelope. (Some succeed greatly, others fail, others still don't get the attention they deserve)

Here's hoping they continue, and hopefully also force mainstream studios to innovate.

I cannot see any of those people making a good mmo, futhermore, if there was a studio i liked i sure as heck would tell them, " STAY OUT OF MMOS THEY ONLY RUIN THE GOOD."

The biggest, the baddest MICROSOFT !.They have everything to gain by making a hi quality game with hi specs. They not only get the fanbase because the game is of great quality, but they could monopolize it through XBOX and maybe some gaming chip that all PC's would need to run it.

Developers such as EPIC games, that sell their game engine ,would also benefit from the exposure of a great game. They have also shown great tech and a great series in the Unrealtournament series. So these guys understand tech and gaming.

Some of the devs like Blizzard are IMO no way capable .Luck once by copying another game, wil lnot happen again, peopel are to ofussy now and much more knowledgeable.Blizzard may have a following now ,and many blind people that think Blizzard can actually CREATE,but that will soon be a thing of the past.Their lack of creativity is never more obvious than the newest rehash of an old game like Starcraft.

SOE is still a giant willing to spend the bucks,so there is always the chance the ymight come up with a baddass game.

Square Enix has some brilliant creative minds, maybe the best in the industry, but i feel they are still stuck behind in technology, gaming in JPN tends to move slowly.Capcom ventured mainstream out of JPN,and now Square is openiong their doors to more varied gaming that tries to attract north americans as well as asians.

I think EA could easily create a great game,or have someone make it on their behalf, they have money and a lot of experience in all aspects of gaming, albeit they are famous for sports.

I'd play a valve game.  Esp if it took the cool stuff from TF2, Portal, L4D, and HL series... oh how much fun would it be to have those combined into a massive pve and pvp world???  I'm drooling at the thought of TF2 taunts and deathcams in mmorpg pvp...

His game engine development is simply the best in the entire gaming industry, his mind works in a way unknown to man. His mega texture Idea is brilliant and I feel we will be seeing that tech in mmos in the next 5 years.

You have got to be kidding me with this comment. Urban Terror, Wolfenstien, Warsow and plenty of other great mods have used the ID tech engine and have talented game designers behind them. Game mod teams also include OSP, 3wave, and RA teams. On top of that, Counterstrike was built using the Quake engine modified. Guess everyone has thier own opinion though ... heh.

Nice list, I probably would have added Black Isle Studios when the team was with Interplay.

Not a very well done list IMO

Where is Bethesda?
If there is a studio which should make a MMO, that is the folks from Bethesda.

Also I don't see why Valve should make a MMO, why not ID Software for instance?
They make the same products but ID has much more experience than Valve.

the Bethesda issue has been discussed previously within this very thread. As to the why not ID software questions, I think I pretty clearly mentioned why I felt that Valve would be a good choice. it wasn't just about experience, it was about the kinds of games made.

You're allowed to disagree with my list. That's the point of them, but it may be helpful to read the accompanying text beyond just the headlines in order to get a sense of the substance of what was said.

Uhh... what?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but Sierra had a chance at building an online phenom back in '95 (before the CUC takeover) when they released The Realm Online.  3D engines were taking their first steps then, but Sierra held true to the 2D side scrolling action that had worked for them in the adventure games previously.  Oddly, The Realm is still in existence 14 years later just not under Sierra anymore; first it went to Codemasters for awhile not long after it launched, then they passed it to Norseman Games.

I hate to say it but I have a feeling that if the original Sierra team, that brought us the fun Quest series, would probably have the same issues creating as impressive a title now as Richard Garriot has had.  And we all know how successful he's been lately.

Give us an updated Space Quest mmo. I had more fun with that game and the wacky sense of humor.

How could they turn Doom in to a good mmo?  They couldn't even turn it in to a good 90 minute movie.  LOL!

Bungie - Bungie should be on the list and I agree the makers behind the RTS Age of Empire are most definitely a company that has the talent that could do a cross-over game.    I would love to see an Age of Empires MMORPG.

Edit:  What would help SOE is a change of leadership.   From the top - down.  SOE needs new people that are cretive and visionary.   Right now SOE has stagnated and disenfranchised their player base.   This can be fixed...with new leadership and a new mission statement.    As I once said in my blog...SOE could be that company that leads this genre to new heights or it can fall the gutter and be looked at as a has-been and right now SOE is looking more and more like a has-been.

Isn´t Rockstar Games currently developing a Wild West version of GTA? A wild west MMO would be something different. ;)

100% agree.  I love to see them reform to make a Planescape Torment MMO.
