The copying of interface elements and some parts of the game structure such as how rage works for warriors seem to be very small things. If you look at the difference in player base between the two.. surely Warcraft must have some large elements that EQ2 does not.

If they were exactly the same they would have equal player bases, right? Saying that who knows maybe Blizzard just got lucky but in my experience of the two games although many elements may look the same actually playing the games are two totally seperate experiences

**EDIT**

Copying is one of the natural process of life that makes things get upgraded, people take the idea elements make a slight change, tweak it a little and make it their own. This happens over and over again and thats something we have to accept, earlier things are a basis for later things.

e.g. An V6 engine gets developed and someones comes along thinking hmm.... I wonder if i can add more valves to that

There is a reason people from your past did not make it to your future.

I personally think GW was a great model for WoW to leech off of.

Adrenaline/Rage, Skill Bars, extra bags, etc. etc.

Seriously?

You know Arenanet  was founded by ex-Blizz devs, right?

Some of them worked on WoW hence the similarities.

It's not news that WoW isn't totally original, its the fact that it does those things better than anyone else that makes it a success.

The OP also needs to look up the definition of FRAUD. The thread title is misleading and this poll really is old news and not even worth talking about anymore. Wow is now considered "old" heheh.

Well, being honest, I think that World of Warcraft copied, but thats just in my eyes. I think they are both great games and I have an extravagant time playing both.

If you're going to stick it out there, don't be afraid if you get it cut off.

First of all "fraud" is not an appropriate term for what you have described.  In terms of copying, I do agree that WoW copied a good amount of ideas from EQ2.  However, I don't see how this makes a lick of difference.  WoW is a highly successful MMORPG and has launched Blizzard into a massive company in the gaming world.  If they did copy, well then they did it right.  Don't get me wrong, I think WoW is somewhat limited and childish.  I personally grew out of it, but I can certainly see why so many people like it that may have never played MMORPGs if the mold was just like UO and EQ use to be.  In this industry you would be unwise not to copy material from successful games.

I don't see why people care if this game copied this games feature or similar UI or similar features.

This isn't only with MMO games, its with every game and every genre,

Saint's Row copied Grand Theft Auto with similar gameplay elements and features, same with Call of Duty been similar to Medal of honor, etc, It does contain similar elements, similar UI's, Similar gameplay, But its not an EXACT copy of said game with the newer game slapping its title over the previous one.

IMO comparing games and saying they copied this or that from an earlier title is kind of pointless, as long as you enjoy the said title, why bother.

Flying carpets were pretty innovative. Those boys at Blizz are cutting edge.

Does OP realize that EQ2 was released about 1 month before WoW was released?  I remember because a friend who played WoW beta got a copy of EQ2 from his girlfriend, and he wanted to try it out before WoW was released.  Just enough time for the free month.

Thus, in terms of development, WoW would be hard pressed to really copy EQ2.

EQ1 was released in 1999, Ultima Online before that, and I think Meridian59 (or something like that) before that.

WoW when it was first designed and conceptuatized was also gonna be set in the Warhammer Universe, but apparently contract negotiations failed or Warhammer didn't want that.  (That has to be one of the biggest fails by a company of all time, right now).

Sure WoW copied some things, but that's pretty much the way all MMO's go as they progress.  Someone comes up with something new and cool, and then it's implemented in the next expansion, and new MMO's do the same things.  Just the nature of the business.

Sony has been copying Blizzard ever since EQ2s horrible launch. Both games are good however so it doesnt really matter.

That was a long time ago my friend.. Before Warcraft 1 even released. And yes I think Gameworkshop has been kicking themselves ever since.

WoW admitted to copying EQ1 in many respects, but has never admitted (afaik) to copying EQ2.  Hell two of the designers from EQ1 designed a large portion of WoW, Tigol and Foror.  Ever heard of them?

WoW has become its own beast, and the new expansion that they're getting ready to announce just shows how they're wantonly bashing the lore into the ground with no thought of a Warcraft 4.  Wait for the details and you'll see I'm right.

So few people who play MMOs actually care about the lore that it doesn't matter, and as time goes on even less will care about the lore behind the game. People play MMOs for fun and the goals of making their character better, most don't believe they are the character and most don't believe they are involved in the actual story. On top of that the majority of people don't even read any NPC dialog, they get quests and either look up exactly how to do it or just pull out the relevant pieces of information on what they need to do where.

So truthfully if a dev team steps on it's own lore a bit most people won't notice or care, but that being said I can't stand WoW anyways.

WoW was in open beta in some form or another for close to 8 months, EQ2 just a few months, if any one had time to borrow ideas it was SOE.

If devs did not borrow ideas we all still be playing pong and pacman.

Also Diablo was released before EQ1 and that has quests, bosses, inventory, classes just as WoW does so maybe Blizzard took ideas from their own games too? think on that.

I'm not sure because they hire some artist check their resumes and sometimes they artist they hire is from other games. And also it's the responsibility of they artist.

I still don't consider being similar is the same as being copies.

Plus copies does not automatically mean less fun, at least not to a sane person.  Fun is based on the perspective of an individual and without a generalized standard.  If I stop copying people in real life, then I would die within 3 minutes from lack of oxygen since I am not copying the act of breathing.

I expressed this plenty in any of the "WoW clone" thread many times, and probably will continue to do so, but this is not related to the topic.

I would have to say EQ2 and WoW both run on the same idea as mmorpg games, but the rest are really opinions.  Hard to say who is copying who, but to the devs, if it works and not patented, then it is up for grabs.  Important part should be how it is implemented into a game and not if the system is similar, but that is just my opinion.
