And has there been anything new or innovating since WoW has been released? No :( just nothing but clones and poorly released games.

The term 'WoW Clone' is overused and ill defined. It means different things to different players.

To some, any game with an orc race, is a WoW clone

First I did not say "WoW clone" I said clones. Every mmorpg feels like its been done before. There is nothing new or innovating has been released.

hmmm, that works too.

EDIT: oops, thats better

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

Ah, I infered from the sentence
"....innovating since WoW was released. No :( Just nothing but clones..." --> "WoW Clones"

Sounds like what you mean is MMO clones, since lets be honest, WoW wasnt revolutionary either...that goes back to the original EQ1/UO. I agree, EvE has distanced itself far from the traditonal MMO setup

TOR is taking an innovative step with the "personal" consequences theme.  How that will work I have no clue, but it could lead to in the future of MMOs in player actions affecting "global" consequences.

Take for example, beware this is crude, a game comes out with the creation of the world to the year 2100.  Lets just say it's a 10,000 year span with a real calendar in game every real year = 1,000 game years.  The choices the players make in the game effect how fast each server evolves and how it evolves and what it evolves into.

So server A could be completly different than server B.

I know this is very crude, but should be easy to see the concept.

PotBS.

You may not have liked it but it was new and different as far as MMOs go.

I would also add CoX, which does many things differently than everquest/WoW.

Lego Universe (not yet released)

You just need to open your eyes a bit.

The reason everything seems to eb the same is because game development companies get criticized for trying something new.

Look at SW:TOR. Everyone is screaming "this isn't an MMO", "it's single-player",  etc....

The reason the tried and true model of MMO's has been the same for so many years is because it is what sells. Innovation and creation of something new is penalized because people end up comparing it to their MMO and the differences stand out and they don't want to invest the time or the energy to experience something new.

Add to that, new systems require ironing out the bugs and problems and most people rather leave and not deal with it than help a company figure it out.

So, by default, companies do the same ole, same ole. Kinda a "fear of the unknown" aspect I guess.

Gamer fanboi. All games are good and/or great in their own way! Stop da hate and go forth and play!

7/09/09 4:29:22 PM#10

There have been quite a few companies that have attempted innovation in mmos since WoW:

Auto assault, DDO, Tabula Rasa, etc... but like Templarga said, everyone mocks games that try to be different and do not support them. If you want innovation you have to show companies your support, not with anonymous and mostly pointless opinionated forum posts, but with money.

If you cant put your money where your mouth is, then dont complain when no one tries to introduce change.

Cheers!

WoW is a polished EQ clone, an expansion of that with enhanced cartoonyness of the game with elfs, gnomes and dwarfs that were drawn from EverQuest, and added the Tauren and Undead, and continues to attract alot of children; nothing wrong with that.

World of Warcraft has the best graphics I've ever seen, even in Perfect World of Jade Dynasty. It's not all that exciting compared to others. But it still makes up for it when it comes to an excellent game play and wonder ful game story.

so far, EVE is the most successful when it comes to not following MMO setup.. it's a big risk doing such an MMO like that. i remember the fall of Hellgate: London, it's my alternative to WoW before.. :(

Well Warhammer was different but well you know how that is going. WOW has been good for gaming but its certainly time for Blizzard to make greater strides with their new unannounced mmo.

Vanguard has some unique features (in crafting, diplomacy, counterattacks), Spellborn is a very innovative game. Tabula Rasa was bad but had fresh ideas. Darkfall got some new things too.

A simple truth-"What people want and what is good for an mmo is not always the same thing"-mrw0lf

7/10/09 6:35:48 AM#18

While everyone always says they want change, truth is, the only person who really likes change is a wet baby.

There have been several inovative titles over the years, including Ryzom to add to the list others have posted.

They all fail for one reason or another.  Not as polished as WOW, graphics aren't as good as WOW, too much like WOW etc.

But in the end, its the players who are at fault, they really don't want different, they want a more polished, slightly upgraded version of the last great fantasy game and that's what they'll end up buying.  Or at least so the Developers believe.

Its not just gaming, people always gravitate towards the comfortable.  They watch the same sort of movies, listen to the same pop music (does MJ's music really sound a whole lot different than the pop music of today?), eat the same type of chain restaurant food (seriously, is Chili's really good food?)

Ya, let's compare Survivor: Season 11 and Survivor: Season 1. Hardly any change whatsoever.

If there was, people would get confused and quit watching, lol.

Same old, but bigger and better = good. People are afraid of new things.

Well, in all honesty, once the first MMO ever was made, not much innovation showed up after that either.

See, even WoW is a collection of ideas from other MMOs. WoW itself is not very original either. It all just depends upon perspective.

I recon there is only so much you can do in an MMO environment with the current technologies and still make money (profit that is). Much more than questing, crafting, grinding, and trading I doubt is possible in an MMO. Sure, one can make elite quests, instances to keep others out, etc. But the whole concept stays the same. An MMO will always be more or less a variation of what is already out there.

Dynamic content is too expensive to maintain for a company, so for now I guess we have to settle with the types that are around and just hope that someone else comes up with a better "formula" or selection of features. But I doubt it will be THAT different from what has already been made.

SWG pre cu-nge was very innovative, alot more than WoW.

DAoC was quite  innovative, but when looking at Mythic's track record after DAoC SI, it seems DAoC was just pure luck and everything after that was worse ( New Frontiers, ToA, Warhammer Online, ... )

Ryzom was and is still innovative, just bad management ( however it seems this is finally turning around ).

Ofcourse the only succesfull innovative mmorpg is EVE Online., however SWG would have been alot more popular than EVE if they hadn't sold their soul.

But I do hope Blizzard will bring some innovation in its new MMO.

only time will tell. The only sure thing is their new mmo will outsell anything on the market and have more subs. Hopefully they bring something new to the table. They already confirmed it will be a new IP and will be nothing like WoW so lets just hope for the best.

You folks had better get used to the new casual friendly accessable mmo's of today.I am afraid that this is the new trend and I even read an article in Gamespot taken from a blizzard dev saying that they are even considering making wow into a free mmo with cash shops. You can look the article up under news on gamespots website if you interested in this.I do not feel like taking time to hunt it up and posting the link.

I know I'm really looking forward to seeing what their next MMO will be. As much as I dislike WoW in its current form, I will admit it's a well-done, polished game. There are maybe a couple others with as much polish (LotRO, Aion maybe). Whatever Blizzard releases will almost assuredly be top-notch and gain a lot of subs quickly.

Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: GW2, ArcheAge
