Elder Scrolls ftw

I use skooma so that I can work harder and longer and make more money so I can buy more skooma. I don't see a problem.

I am somewhat amazed to discover that at least one person has mentioned every one that already thought of when asking myself the OPs question and really thinking about answers. My top few choices in no particular order would probably be the following.

  • Deus Ex
  • Fallout
  • X-Com (though not an RPG I still think the setting would make an awesome MMOG)
  • Vampire: Bloodlines (already happening in the form of CCPs "World Of Darkness" MMOG)
  • Freelancer
  • SW:KOTOR (already happening obviously)

Two others that I would also love to see, although they really have no true PC game RPG counterpart are Shadowrun and a Call of Cthulhu based horror MMOG (although admittedly it might be tough to make it work and it would probably be a niche game at best. I realize that "The Secret World" by FunCom sounds a lot like this game, but it's a new IP).

Not really an rpg but a monster hunter mmo with more to do than just the kill, add crafting and stuff.

Also Zelda follows a tight script couldnt really picture 500 green elves running around would be like wow during christmas

i remember a 2d game on the original playstation that would have fitted the horror concept really well . for the life of me i cant remember its name ( had vampires in it ).

a gothic horror mmo might be fun but i think it would have to go beyond just the monster hunter thing .

Do you mean Legacy of Kain?

thats the one :) was wracking my brain there

Loved that game and the sequals. thought the world seting was really interesting, Def somthing that could be built on 4 a mmo.

Yeah same here, kinda forgot about the series, but it was one of those games I really enjoyed back then, even the last part was great, though filled with lots of issue's as camaraq control was abit messy, the overall game/story/gameplay was really great.

If not a MMORPG I would like to see a new updated version of the serie come back again, even in it's singleplayer form I feel I might again enjoy it if it's brought back uptodate with today's tech.

Anyway a few more singleplayer games I might have intrest in if they see the MMORPG light one day would be:

Call of Duty Online, not in the way the multiplayer is setup, even thought it's lightspeeds ahead of what regular mulitplayer games have been years ago, I want it to be a virtual world, where vehicles need to be crafted/made/repaired, where city's if not whole country's can be conquered, where the visuals look as good as Cod4/5, where every desired vehicle can be driven/flown/sailed.

Grand Theft Auto, I know games like APB or Crimecraft, but I see them as Action Online games that are similar to multiplayer GTA, but thats not what I want from a GTA MMORPG, again I want it to be a world, where if I want can own a store where crafted goods, weapons, armor, clothing, or what ever can be sold, also where vehicles are crafted together with the common MMORPG feature's.

Half Life Online, nothing more to add.

Fable Online, again nothing more to add.

But these games I mentioned if they ever get to it making them MMORPG's, I hope they won't start sooner then in a few years, cause the tech to develop these games is not ready yet to have the depth we see them have in the singleplayer part.

You all remember, I suppose, that beautiful and inspired saying of Our Ford's: "History is bunk."

7/07/09 4:19:17 AM#84

My own suggestions (didn't see them mentioned by others):

METROID:  would make a cool MMORPG, and would offer a refreshing departure from the fantasy genre (could even have space travel like Eve, but planet side content a la Metroid's SP gameplay = the real point of the game).  You could offer skills or armor/weapon sets that would allow players to PT up and play traditional roles like tank/DD/CC/etc., and players could solo a lot of the content too (though elite bosses/mobs would take cooperation).

SECRET OF MANA:  Please. Please. Please. /wishfully listens to "A Wish" ;-P

--------------------------------

I agree with these great suggestions (found in this thread and others like it):

LEGACY OF KAIN:  If I am going to play fantasy genre, which I don't really mind, I want to be BAD/EVIL once and awhile.... or, at least, be able to play a character who toes that line/struggles internally with their nature, as we see in the LoK series... I'm tired of vanilla, but don't seek my "maliciousness" from ganking ppl and talking smack.  I want to PvE like I'm on the side of darkness... and instead of some heroic n00b coming to the town's rescue and slaying vampires who threaten them, let's start allowing PC's to go after those fat, juicy mortals who are already dead anyway... so what does it hurt that we prey on them???  *diabolical Kain laughter*... "VAE VICTUS!" ;-P

SUIKODEN:  Also think this was a good suggestion by others.  I would buy it if only to listen to its music.  And, even if they were graphically inferior, the suikoden games always had some cool ideas/content in them... Still, would probably be too "Asian"/grindy for most (just base that on seeing so many ppl knock on Aion for that, so I bet something like Suikoden would *not* appeal to those players at all). (;^.^)

XENOGEARS:  Likewise, cool... am actually surprised we haven't seen more MMO's featuring Gundam type gears.  I know there's a lot of rabid fanboyism with that stuff, though (maybe not as much anymore?) and that would bother some western gamers.  Still, it would be perfect if they stayed focused on the IP and coupled gears AND PC interaction with the game world.

I loved how Xenogears really featured the importance of Archetypes and something called "Jungian/Archetypal criticism" (which is almost a mystical way of looking at how humans, regardless of time and place, tend to reproduce the same kinds of mythologies and types of heroes/characters in their culture's most important stories).  It really opened my eyes to a lot of things, in both games and literature/culture in general.  Somehow using that in an MMO, and incorporating that weird symbolism (along with a lot of the Freudian psychology you find in it too) would be amazing.  Probably way too esoteric, though...

SNES/GENESIS SHADOWRUN:  Would also be a refreshing change of pace from the fantasy genre.  I would hope the visuals would be as "gritty" and "dingy" as the 16-bit counterpart was.  The music, too.  Would make an interesting game world to explore and would probably make it *much* easier for players to RP considering they wouldn't feel like they should be saying "thee or thou" every other word.

EARTHBOUND:  What a great release a game like this would make for those who needed a quick, casual break from their main game of choice.  The whole world could be one huge joke on all of the things that make us so jaded about your standard MMO (e.g., endless grind, outdated game engines, unoriginal delivery/merc/convoy quests, etc.), just as Earthbound (and it's sequels) were a huge joke on video games/gamers, RPG's, and to a lesser extent culture/popculture.  The music would rule too.... =D

I LiKe SoNg YeS? ZoOm! BoInG! BuRp!

-------------------------

Plus, I think I've seen people mention "Ico" and maybe "Shadows of the Colosus."  Both would make for amazing gaming memories/experiences, especially taking down a Colossus with fellow players (I don't know if MMO's are "there" yet as far as being able to make a game have the SP quality that throws you right into the action).  Or, in the case of a game like Ico, I would welcome a game that truly bewitches/immerses you in a truly mysterious and "open"/somewhat sprawling world.

I'd say Elder Scrolls but no I would rather see a single player game of that type because bethesda have never done a game with good combat and while I can stand that in a single player game, I'd hate it in an MMO.

There are no games I want to see ruined by putting into an mmorpg but I'd love to see...

The ability to focus attention on important things is a defining characteristic of intelligence.

To be honest, there are a lot of people out there who would argue that no single player RPG should be turned into an MMO because, "it ruins the game." However, I would suggest to those people that the experience came with the original iterations and any single player sequels or prequels. In effect, the experience has been had and any new experience is just that - new.

So, I'd probably like to see some classics turned into the MMO-verse.

- Neverwinter Nights: Sure, we've had D+D but Turbine gave us one of the worst MMOs to date with that game. Any NwN MMO would have to support player created dungeons and narrative right from the start, as well as being heavily story driven for the initial content. DDO wasn't good enough and the buck should be passed round about now. Of course, any iteration of NwN in MMO form would come out of Cryptic. That's probably not such a good thing.

- Mass Effect: Mass Effect has to be one of the best and most epic single player RPGs I have ever played. Bioware drew from the best elements of sci-fi and story telling, as well as adding their own polished and refined RPG experience to the mix, to deliver one of my top RPGs of all time. Yet again, any iteration of ME in MMO form would have to be heavily story driven but the fact that this is a Bioware IP and they would have the financial backing of EA whilst retaining near-autonomy from them, it's pretty much 100% certain that they'd do it justice. After the trilogy is finished, this is something I think we could see. I also don't think it would take too long too develop. Sadly however, it would be in direct competition with SWTOR, so I don't think we'll see it for a very long time, if at all.

- The Elder Scrolls: Bethesda are arguably the masters of the sandbox RPG and whilst we've recently had games like Darkfall try to build on this in the MMO genre, no one has got it correct. I don't think that will change when Mortal Online comes out either. We already suspect that ZeniMax Online is working on a TES MMO but with all of the problems surrounding Interplays Fallout MMO, there may be a change of IP at ZO in favour of the much more financially lucrative Fallout franchise. In other words, TES may get pushed to the side for another 5-10 years in favour of the much larger cash cow over at Bethesda. Whatever happens, it'll be a pleasure to play a TES MMO and - if it is anything like Oblivion - I'll be an addict for life.

Those are my top 3. I though about games like Xcom and Deus Ex but I'm not too keen on seeing some of the classic RPGs turned into MMOs, for my own selfish reasons. Recent Xcom games have been rubbish and Deus Ex 3 is probably going to be shit. In other words, those franchises are dead and gone to me.

Daggerfall / Morrowind (They made Oblivion too medieval for me, especially the temples changing from classical type gods to a more medieval church - in the elder scrolls world i liked the idea of the imperials being more like Rome with the Breton area more medieval).

Baldur's Gate would be fun from a sight-seeing point of view.

Planescape would be good because it wouldn't need to make any sense - portals from the big city could lead to anywhere and anything.
