Hi, I recently installed the game "Mabinogi" onto a fairly new laptop computer. The computer's specs should be more than enough to run the game well, but it plays terribly.  I'm pretty sure the internet connection isn't the problem because the game lags terribly before even connecting.  The client takes about 5 minutes to start up, then has giant lag spikes like every 10 seconds. It takes me about 20 minutes just to get ingame.  I've tried out a few other similar games and they've all got pretty bad lag as well.

Here are the computer's specs:
Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1
32-bit OS
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-57 (2 CPUs), ~1.9GHz
2GB RAM
GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M
DirectX 10

The requirements for Mabinogi are:

NVidia-Geforce2MX or
ATI Radeon 7000 or similar

I'm pretty sure I have all of the latest drivers and I changed all of graphic settings to their lowest quality with still no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Run a virus scan. Use more than one scanner. There are many free ones out there. I have been using SpyBot for years. It would not hurt to double check your drivers, just in case.

That's a pretty low end laptop , not really for gaming. but even tho the 1.9 is low i would say it's the really bad 7150. that card is not really for any games mmo wise. it say you need a 7000 or better but most know that to mean 7600 or better.

That may be the case but the game he's running has really low hardware req's so it should run fine.. the game requires a Geforce 2MX or better, that's 5 generations behind his Geforce 7150. The 7000 req is a Radeon 7000 which is also 5 generations behind his Geforce 7150.

Do you have SP1 for Vista and the other windows updates? Do single player games perform really badly too or only online games?

I do have SP1, Windows is fully updated, and single player games perform really badly too.

you might have to run the game in compatibility mode (whatever the name is lol)

often some new game have older program  it should do the trick

your computer is descent for gaming

but vista as a lot of bottleneck

from the factory vista run at about 65 % the speed of xp  so its pretty steep and if you add the speed up most xp user do

vista is 50>% slower then xp so its a big issue

but you shouldnt have the issue your getting

scan for virus ,if you did it  download and scan using spybot

do a dxdiag and check to see if you have problem there

thats about it ,this should help you one way or another if not repost other might have other solution concerning mabinogi great game by the way good choice

Mabinogi is just awful,the graphics are so bad it does not come close to rival some better nintendo 64 games.

The only thing i can think of is too many resources are being used and that card,probably an integrated card is not as good as you think it is.Most laptops i looked at when i was thinking of buying one ALL had horrible graphic cards,they were so bad i gave up buying one.The only machines that were decent were more costly than a good PC,so i said screw laptops.

I might addf that you may be experiencing net lag not graphic lag or performance lag.I guarantee that the games graphics are so bad that ANYTHING should be able to play this game,i would bet anything my 10 yr old PC will play it easily.

I'm running a Virus scan with AVG right now, nothing so far.  I googled Spybot and a few different sites came up.  Can I get a direct link somewhere please?  Don't wanna go downloading the wrong thing and then getting a new virus...

Also I ran dxdiag and everything's good there.

 link to download Spybot, one of the best free programs ever. It gets alot of shit of your computer that you didnt even know you had.

Another program i can recommend is Uniblue Registry Booster and Uniblue SpeedupMyPC, but those are not free, although you can find them free on some sites ;)

Now I have another problem.  The laptop won't stay on long enough to complete the scans.  It just shuts off randomly in the middle of them.  Think a system restore is in order?

Sounds like a heat issue.

The fan does whirl awfully loudly.  It's on a tile countertop right now.  I'll try moving it...

Yep, looks like that may be the problem.  The core temp is showing 60-65C degrees right now with just Firefox open.  Great... Now how do I go about fixing that?

I have to agree with this. Besides that, Vista 32 bit is probably slightly better than Windows ME as far as OSes go.

Well, it's not my computer, so installing XP is out of the question unfortunately...  Thanks for the suggestion though.  Any other ideas?

A tool that I really like is Game Booster it disable's windows tasks running in the background and is very easy to use once finished playing just click on non gaming mode and it re-enables the tasks that were running you will get a lot better performance out of it hope this helps www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html

format your HD and just install XP with SP3 hehe :D

You really need more ram with Vista. Think XP but double all ram requirements.

The designation and capability of laptop graphic cards are very different from the designations & capabilty of stand alone graphic cards. The M designation is a dead give away.

You can build a great gaming cpu for just 400 usd or maybe even less in this economy.

Well the computer's still getting really hot, but after using compressed air, updating the bios, and setting the computer in power saver mode, the game seems to be working fine now.  Thanks everyone.

 The PC overheating is a serious issue and you may want to consider taking it to be worked on or give it back to whomever you got it from and let them know of the issue.

 The performance issue you have been speaking of could be a result of the overheating like was suggested, or if you are in a wireless enviroment ?  It can also cause the "lag" and performance degredation.

  The specs of the laptop are decent to run that specific game, but the issues could be caused from anything like outdated drivers, and I do know that the specific chipset you are using most likely does not have appropriate updated drivers.

  If you are not sure about the Whql certified drivers reg'd on your hardware you can run a dxdiag from the start>run and type in dxdiag, it will list the hardware and the driver dates. Also when reinstalling or getting a new driver for that chipset, be sure and uninstall the previous driver before installing the new one, Nvidia seems to have a few files that will not uninstall sometimes or be overwritten during a driver update process which will cause issues also.

 If you are runing AVG or any virus detection or worm detection software be sure that it is also not causing an issue with the game .. I have seen AVG just about crash a game during certain times and others run just fine, also , Nortons, and a few other 3rd party programs will get the same results.

 You can make sure regular file Maint. is run, defrag, clean up unwanted files and also disable anything in your startup, but be cautious if you are not familiar with the process. Click on Start>Run> Type in MSCONFIG and hit enter, under the STARTUP tab, you can select diable all, and it will remove the checkmarks from the apps that are starting with windows.

 You can also, select Under windows performance settings to set to BEST PERFORMANCE and this will ease up resources also, and BTW, if you are running Vista Sidebar, turn it off, it loves resources..

 Other that these things, the hardware could be faulty and a tech needs to open it up and make sure everything is in working order..... Good Luck..

Then there's two options.

A) You have a virus, which is the simple in and out option.

B) You're computer needs to be upgraded. I agree more with option B. Most people (all people) tend to agree that ANY gaming on Vista, be it Diablo or Crysis, requires 3GB of RAM. Or, in a game like Crysis' case, it requires 1GB more than listed of the box. And at least 3GB. Mabinogi, requires very little, although the specs they give seem to be to get the game to start up and run as something little more than a slideshow.

If I were you, I'd do the following:

Download Avast AntiVirus, Avira AntiVir, Panda Cloud (three different, highly praised virus scanners) , and SpyBot. Do a full, thorough scan with each of them.

Download CCleaner, let it run.

Clear up your hard disk space, make sure you have about 5GB left at least. Personally, I leave 10% of my drive open (30GB out of a 300GB for example).

Update your all of your drivers, this is a horrible process but worthwhile. You probably will want to look on the site of your laptop manufacturer before anything. Specifically, look for these drivers:

Sound Card

Video Card

Wireless Modem/Normal Modem

Motherboard

You can find the Brand and Model for these by hitting your Windows Start Orb, typing dxdiag and hitting enter. Click the Orb and typing MSINFO32 and hitting enter will give you information also. If you are still having trouble finding a part, such as the mainboard (motherboard) download and CPUZ and use it.

After that is complete, if games are still running slowly, pick up more RAM, it should help you out if only a little bit.

And if the games are still running slowly, either format your drive or have it looked at by a professional computer technician. Very good ones can be found locally, large stores, such as Best Buy, may contain techs who are sub-par.

EDIT: About the overheating, laptops tend to get quite warm, although remember try not to keep it on a desk, it's best to buy a laptop cooling unit if your system is used heavily. I would suggest not looking specifically for one with fans, rather for one with a grill-like surface, to allow good airflow. Also, remember never to keep it on all the time. The same goes for desktops, it will result in a quicker death for the computer and it doesn't allow temporary folders and caches to properly dump
